Default Oil leak on 2.2 liter engine

I have a 98 Legacy with the 2.2 liter. I have a small oil leak I cant find. I think it is coming from the engine block to Transmission area, but only leaks when running and then burns off the exhaust. Any idea what it may be and what I will have to do fix it, or maybe just where to start?

Ryan

you might want to check your rear main seal or your inner cv boots...both of these will leak and burn off on the exhaust

There are quite a few things that can burn off the exhaust

If what you see is between the block and tranny bellhousing, it is most likely the seperator plate, located offset lower right in the back side of the block, in bellhousing mounting area. It requires seperation of tranny and engine block and removal of flex plate (or flywheel/clutch, I'm not sure, I've done two of these on 4EATs).

Subaru had put in plastic seperator plates in earlier cars, so unfortunately, this thing is common, but not completely engine life threatening serious, as my own Legacy has the same problem . I would take it into serious consideration if it does become a large primary leak.

The updated plates are now alloy/metal. And are "standard" should I say in the newer models.

A picture would be nice to confirm what exactly it is. But I realize it can be hard to access the underbody for people.

Also check if there is any seepage from the valve covers, oil pump. Or any of the cam plates as this is a common problem for EJ22s.

Default Response to oil leak

Thanks for the insight. Sounds like it may be a little too much for myself to tackle. I'll try to get a better look and perhaps some pictures, as well as another look through the repair manual and diagrams.

Sounds like it may be expensive if I have to seperate the transmission and the engine. Any suggestions besides an expensive dealership service department, where, unfortunately, the mechanic unions are on strike here in St. Louis.

I dont think it is an oil pump. Because this is the second oil leak. The first on came from the oil pump and was leaking into the timing belt housing and causing problems there. But I got that one fixed and this one is clearly coming from the rear of the engine and appears, according to my limited knowledge of engine mechanics, running off the the front section of the transmission. I'll try to get a picture.

Would an oil additive for engine leak be a bad idea, for a fix?

Default Oil leak

You could try a heavier weight oil to possibly slow down the oil leak until you can scarf up the money to get it fixed. Also, using dino oil will provide a little help. I don't know how bad your leak is, but I've tried the aforementioned methods above to hold me over until I had to fix a leak (a slow dripping leak that is). Good luck to you.
