By the way you cant use any aftermarket dp. the bell mouth ones dont work. Here is the one I custom fabbed in 20 mins just to drive the car around. LOL

started as a helix catless dp and then cut the bell mouth off the factory ine and the usdm one.

came out like this and fits like a glove. As you can see at the top there was about 3" of pipe added.

And that sexy adaptor plate was made by the one and only Kplutien. It worked perfect.

Mounted

Thanks again Ken. Now get your hodge podge pile of cam bs together. Clearly seeing it doesnt work again.

Where I screwed up was having them weld it all the way around instead of just tacking it and checking the results. I had to saw the weld and move the dp to the left a fair amount but they re-welded it for free. The welding isnt show quality but with a heat shield it wont matter. Plus all this is in my 97 OBS that has a green engine bay and dark grey paint job. Function over form.
Thanks Julian, that's what I wanted to see. I'm one of those that spent $400 for an aftermarket down pipe, I purchased a Tomei Jdm length and extended my intermediate pipe to make it work. I'm sure your down pipe is functional and will encourage others to build their own. Curious to see what the power and torque curves will look like when you get a tune.

It seems a large amount of people are spinning bearings , how many of you daily drive these setups ?

I am ideally looking for something that if maintained well can last me 50-80k miles at least.

I've driven 10k on mine since the swap, and it is a DD. MY UOA came out flawless. Spinning bearings will most likely be the result wrong/low oil, cracked oil pickup tube, tracking, revving it high w/o proper warm up etc.

There is no reason why these motors shouldn't last 80-100k w/ proper maintenance.

There is not many cases of spun bearings reported on this thread, where do you see people having ej207 bearing issues reported ?

Mine is also a daily driver, clocked 8,000+ miles since swap, no issues.

I am one of the spun bearing guys but I've read this complete thread at least 2 times complete and I couldn't count a handful and spun bearing issues. So I'd say this is 1% kinda issue like the government stuff, right? haha

Maybe I am just paranoid.

The motor swap really is something I want to do but I am debating just saving for an E36 M3 instead and daily driving the wagon forever.

I'm getting it etuned this weekend by phatbotti. I'll post up the graphs. Hoping for 300ft/lbs with a 3port Ebcs, intake, Walboro and this thrown together Dp.

I also owe you d_Rodman for helping me figure out I had a ej207 when I found that gem on craigslist a few months back. I wasn't looking for one, but after doing the research on it and reading through this thread, I knew I wanted one.

I spun a bearing in my v6 207. It had 180,000KM on it and I was running 10-30 Royal Purple.
I blame myself I was driving at too many RPM for too long.

EDIT: Thought I should add that I beat the crap out of it on a regular basis at the track and was running a tomei m7760 (20g) for it's last month

Thanks!

Any clue where to pick up a 207 cam gear?

RP 5W30 is known for not holding it's viscosity well. It shears down to lower viscosity in almost any engine, I imagine our engines (which are tough on oil) are no exception. Dunno about 10W30 though.

According to Sponaugle they are the same part number for the (later) JDM and USDM intake AVCS cam gears.

That whole thread is an excellent read for understanding differences between the EJ205 and EJ207 cams and how AVCS works, etc...

I think you need to research a bit more so you can form a more reasoned question. This also isn't really a turbo specific thread.

Is Rotella 0W40 a good oil to use in a Version 8 motor?

I would run T6 instead. It has been proven to keep bearings happy.

+1 on Rotella T6

If you want a lighter weight, I had good luck with Rotella 5w40 in my EJ207 & built EJ257.

The usdm cam gear will not give you more than 30 deg of advance, it is physically limited by its design. Based on this I would assume they are not the same part, however it appears they are the same part number. The jdm cars do 40+ deg from the factory, and from the ej207 swaps we have put into 32bit cars they have no issue hitting 40 deg of advance so the 30deg limit on the usdm cars is a physical limit on the 255/257 motor cam gears themselves.

Can someone find the same picture of a jdm cam gear that I can measure digitally.

Edit: further digging I find this, question is why are we able to get more advance from the jdm motor if the gears appear the same? The mystery continues.......

based on indirect reference through the opposedforces catalog they are the same part number as used in the USDM Sti, however as a disclaimer,it is the Euro 2000CC DOHC H-POWER TURBO STi, listed for comparison.

Just playing devils advocate based on lukeskywrx's physical findings on the usdm cam gear,.. are the euro 2L Sti, equipped with 'doo-doo' cam gears just as they have small port heads?

I am beginning to suspect the 40 deg of advance might not all be real, anyone have a 207 on the bench they can measure the real cam advance for us? I know the USDM motors will physically do the 25-30, now what about the 207?

i know that in the RomRaider avcs tables, the stock tables go up to 45*, but in my logging, i've only seen up to 40*. no hard measurements here, just logging numbers, fwiw.

40 degrees is in terms of the crank. since there is a 2:1 ratio, it only takes 20 at the cams to result in 40 degrees relative to crank position. Just like how each cam gear tooth is 7.5 degrees of cam, but 15 in terms of the actual cycle. It's all explained in that thread.

The reason the JDM cars can have more advance is in the cams and heads. They run lower lift and the big ports bring the flow. The small ports require higher lift to get flow, so there's less cam advance available for a given valve to piston clearance, therefore lower AVCS advance in the USDM programming. 08+ Dual AVCS brings back 40ish degrees of overlap at low RPMs by adjusting the intake forward and the exhaust backwards.

I've programmed and logged 45 degrees, and I've definitely seen a difference from 40 degrees at <3000 RPM as a result.
