Not a bad effort at all. I think you could use a little more exposure and a tiny bit less contrast, since you can't really see the tire line in the wheel well. The photo is pretty center-oriented though, so if anything that would be the first thing to change if nothing else. Did you also take this at standing eye level height?

By exposure, do you mean shutter speed? Or are you talking about something in PS? I took the photo on a tripod at mid-car level with a Sigma 10-20mm @20mm IIRC.

Nope, by exposure I mean exposure...as in, the overall entire brightness of the photo itself. Exposure is determined by the combination of shutter speed and aperture. Overall, your photo is a bit on the dark side. While you can adjust this in Photoshop, it's always better to start with a good exposure first so that you don't lose details, highlights, or shadows later on in post processing.

I see, so is that adjusted by the +/- button and numbered increments?

On your camera, that's called "Exposure Compensation" and you can adjust it a little by doing that, but it's really no substitute than a properly exposed photo to begin with.

I see. Thanks for the help. I am still trying to learn the settings and trying to find the "sweet spot" when it comes to exposure. I will continue to post in here, and I am happy that you are willing to provide such helpful constructive criticism.

Sure thing Just keep in mind that there's never going really to be "sweet spot" for exposure, because it really all depends on the location, the lighting situation, time of day...everything.

Ive got a few pics Id like to get some criticism on...my wife and I are going to be taking pictures in Italy soon for the Air Force and friends. We will be doing everything; weddings, car shows, sports, aircraft, family, etc. While our equipment isnt very great at all, we do own a Canon EOS 10D and several lenses...we will be investing in a Mac and photoshop, but these pictures were edited on my little ol' HP laptop. Let me know what you think!

Im still working on getting good automotive photos...whenever my wife gives me the Canon back I can practice more Oh, those are my kids and wife BTW in case anyone asks lol

These are all pretty good, but I would like to keep this thread restricted to automotive photography. You've got good exposure, depth of field, and bokeh overall, which shows that even the aging 10D can still take some great photos. If anything, most of the photos you posted are a little center-oriented, but otherwise your eye is quite good. I look forward to seeing some more automotive photos from you soon!

Thanks Armin! Sorry about the non-automotive pics...but I couldnt pass up asking for advice about them. Ive taken alot of pictures that were center-oriented, I guess b/c I feel more comfortable doing so. Ill try some new angles, etc and see how it works out. The 10D is aging, and we plan on purchasing a new camera in the future, but like you said, it still takes some damn good pictures, and more importantly, Im comfortable shooting with it in manual mode. Thanks again for the criticism Armin

Thanks man, I really enjoy mine. Id love another subie, but I have to keep the G8 in the family...the rawness from the 6.0 is addicting, and so is the sound ....but not the gas mileage

You're most welcome. Plus, the good thing is that you should feel right at home even with the newer Canon DSLRs these days, so there shouldn't be much of a learning curve once you decide to make a new purchase.

i think you guys are right about the whole photobucket decreasing quality. they come out nice and sharp when i edit them and save. then i post up here and they dont look at "neat"

anywho, messed around with 2 exposure overlays. need the practice.. one exposure for sky, and one for car.. still trying to figure out best blending procedures. but i liked the way this one came out

armin, What do you think is a good ***402; for shooting most cars to get it all in focus?

I just ordered a Canon T2i and waiting on it to show up. It'll have the kit lens with it.

I'm just wondering what kind of stuff I should be looking at for settings and all. What is typically a god range of ***402; when shooting a car. Both for say whole car focus like the photo above and say if that same photo were head on and you only wanted the front to mid hoof in focus.

I'm trying to get a better grasp on what's good at what time and all and it's proving to be a pita... lol.

Can't wait till the new camera shows up. Back ordered FTL lol.

Aperture is not the only thing affecting your depth of field- it's a combination of various factors, including focal length, focal distance, lens design, and of course, aperture. There is not a specific aperture setting which will do this for you, and ideally, the smaller the aperture number (i.e. ***402;2, ***402;1.8, etc.) the easier it is to better separate the car from the background.

With a kit lens you're relatively limited, but if you're shooting with a say, 18-70, you'd be better off shooting on the 70 end with a wide open iris, as a more telephoto lens with an open aperture will add those out-of-focus areas to the image that look pleasing to the eye. Getting the entire car in focus may mean shooting around ***402;5.6 or ***402;8, which could be positive in terms of overall image sharpness, but your background could also be tack sharp- something which may or may not detract from the overall look of the image.

Sounds like it's time to step it up I can get you $5 off your SmugMug.com subscription if you're interested. Once you go SmugMug, you really don't go anywhere else. It may not have the easy sharing features that Flickr has, but all the options you have for simply hosting your photos (especially if you go for the Pro subscription) make it totally worthwhile.

I really like how this came out. The one thing that stands out to me is that the hills and plants in the background seem a little too washed out, especially when compared to the clouds. Thus, in that respect it looks a little unrealistic...but I do like the direction you're going

NewsPhotog has it all correct and I don't even need to add anything to what he said I should note that I'm very happy to have NewsPhotog, Ultimate Lurker, and others who have photography experience helping out on this thread and sharing their experiences. If nothing else, it helps confirm that I'm not just full of hot air but it also helps everyone understand that the things we're saying are far-reaching among experienced photographers out there.

What do you think about these armin? First "offroad action" shots Ive tried, non posing shots that is. I found it a little difficult finding the right angles when I wasnt able to position the vehicle.

I know the lighting conditions weren't exactly perfect, but I like the effect it gave the photos.

Thanks!! i will look into new hosting sites. one thing i do like about photobucket though, is its free. but it just may be time for me to upgrade, since theres obviously no sign of me slowing down with my photography.

after i edited the shot and posted... i realized what i could have done better when choosing which exposure i wanted for the car. next time!

These aren't bad, and obviously you can't have much control over lighting conditions when you're out in the field like this. The last one is a tiny bit overexposed, but the rest are pretty good. I'd just suggest making sure the car doesn't get too close to the edge of the frame and try to keep it in the thirds crosspoint, just like a normal shot. I'd also like to actually see these in action rather than the car being parked on the hill

Yep, it's free...but you get what you pay for SmugMug has a stupid amount of options...so many that I myself don't even make use of all of them. Plus, you're not limited by bandwidth, amount of images, or even amount of space.

Forgive me, but smugmug is only slightly better than photobucket with regards to clarity of posted images, which is why I now use Flickr exclusively for my hosting, as it's far and away the better choice (and free). I still use smugmug for my pictures, but I only host from Flickr.

Have you tried adjusted the sharpening settings in SmugMug, Andrew? I've never found any problems hosting from SmugMug, even using the default sharpening settings, but maybe that's just me. I can tell the Flickr definitely has its own sharpening settings but sometimes it's a bit too much for me and I'm not aware of any way to adjust it. I also don't like the whole "you have to link back to your Flickr photo" policy, along with many of the other restrictions on the freedom of how you use your images. Then again, that's could be also part of what you pay for with SmugMug.

I'm actually using a paid pro Flickr account too, so it's about as an apples to apples comparison as possible
