this an uel header for a n/a subaru off ebay. it bolts up to all n/a 2.5 and 2.2l subarus up to 05. 06 and up you need to buy the whole exhaust engine back to get the rumble, there a **** load of threads about this on nasioc and rs25.com.

so it wont be possible to just change the headers and add a turbo xs cat back to it? I have searched nasioc and keep getting 05 and 06.

for an 08 the only way to do it without any cutting and welding is by buying a cat-pipe from http://rallisportracing.com/

otherwise you'll need to have a custom cat pipe made for the car.

you have to change the header, get a cat pipe like bcware says from rallysportracing.com or extend your 02 sensors. and get a catback that will fit your car. your looking at minimum of $1000 for an ok setup

You could modify your existing cat pipe, but it would require cutting and lengthening and making a new flange, but it shouldn't be too hard.

Passing inspection is a maybe, because I've never known anyone to try it. You might contact the website owner; he seems like a very nice guy and answered questions for me in the past.

I'm not sure about emissions, but the visual inspection should be fine.

To answer the OP's questions about passing emissions: on an 07, if you alter the header or the cat pipe, you will almost certainly not pass emissions if the emissions test is an OBD-II scan.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Headers: 165.00 shipped from ebay
Fabbed mid pipe section : Tubbing $40 per 5 feet so say $80 total High Flow cat $70.shipped ( or chepaer off ebay or the net) labor at a shop and not a nat'l chain like Monroe maybe $40/ hour x 3-4. Thats well under a $1000 I got mine done TOTAL for UNDER $400 more like $377.00 ( that header, pipe, cat, O2 work, and labot) I have a 09 Legacy which is the same underneath as your impreza 08-09 but also very similar 06 forward. Shop around for your parts and find a good shop and keep in mind you can extend your own wires and you will have a sweet sounding setup with a lil money to get a nice dash piece that wiggles while you drive

Where did you get EL headers on ebay shipped for $165? That's hundreds less than they've been going for. I call BS.

You can't get EL for 165, that has to be a UEL price.

Essentially, yes.

Would that be a failure due to codes being thrown?

Yeah, it'll fail for one of two reasons. It'll either fail because it's got a stored DTC (with CEL illumintated) or it'll fail because the emissions test block reports Not Ready (if you've reset the ECU to clear the DTC or used RR/AP to delete the CEL).

would running a real cat prevent this (as opposed to a high flow cat)? I have not heard much feedback in regard to emissions from those that have installed headers.

No. Aftermarket headers let enough heat out that even stock cats keep working. Annoyingly, this I have proved.

Which brings us back to wrapping and coating the headers, but would moving the o2 sensors closer to the engine result in hotter gases?

I was doing a lot of searching last night on people with 05+ cars that can't mess with the rear o2 sensor and was wondering if the UEL design was pushing their o2 sensors much farther away than stock.

Comparing these different designs we can see how the borla rep UEL headers have, by far, the largest surface area. The huge surface area of the borla reps is definitely going to result in much cooler exhaust gases by the time it reaches the o2 sensors.

The wrx ebay header looks like a MUCH better design being much shorter and 4 to 1. Empirically I would think this design would produce better flow and hotter gases since one can slap a cat very close to the engine.

The other photos are just a reference to show how much smaller the surface area of the stock headers is compared to the borla reps on top of being shielded.

Any thoughts?

Why does the 05 and older header get an exclamation point?

The WRX header is not a good one for us. Primary length is VERY important, and for most of what we're going to be doing, longer is better.
