Anywho...The Toledo pro came and went. I managed to squeak out a win even though sunday when I pulled in to the staging lanes for my first run the brake pedal went right to the floor. The car was all over the place and sometimes the brakes would work, the rest of the time they'd just lock up due to the abs going in and out. Sometimes you'd turn in, the car would buck and do what it wanted. Turns out at the last event, I'm pretty sure, I broke the cage on the left front wheel bearing. There had been a loud pop from the left front. Even though I inspected everything on the left front it wasn't found until Sunday morning prior to Billy's runs in SM. I think the hard 24 runs it got saturday accelerated it's demise. I pulled it apart tonight. The wheel movement is slightly exagerated because I did pull some of the inner bearings out at the event site yesterday. Once I pulled the housing I could begin to see the damage. Rollers had shifted on the inner. And the outer bearing I had stopped to pick up a bearing on the way home but it turns out the hub itself has 6 hairline cracks in it. The outer portion has also been destoryed. The housing is fine since it carries a pressed in race. I'm on the hunt for some spare assemblies now. As I have nothing to reassemble at this point. It also damaged the caliper bracket, the caliper itself and I should get a new ring for the rotor$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ |

That's a real bummer Greg =( I hope you can get it done before Alex products! Good luck with it! You did great this weekend keep up the good work.
And I think we can safely say this wasn't my fault this time ;-) although I was driving it at the event we heard the pop. JK. |

Sorry to hear Greg. Hope to see her good as new soon. |

I get what you did there "pressed"
Not so much. I got a new bearing, hub, seals, and I'm waiting on a pound of neo synthetic grease. I should have it together and the passenger side checked out / repacked by the weekend. |

how many miles did that bearing live through? Did it have synthetic/motorsport grade grease in it?

Holy cow that's a lot of play. Too bad it failed before the weekend was over and decided to mess up your brakes as well.

I suspect what happened is: I recently installed the aluminum lca's. Perhaps, even though I tq'd and peened the nut, the nut backed off a bit. Allowing enough movenment to snap the cage. IDK. That's my thought. I'm going to pull apart the right side as well to inspect/grease. We can take a look at it's condition then. Quote:
It's really too bad we didn't find it Saturday. In the afternoon we inspected for a lumping (left front) we had noticed. Turned out to be the left side caliper was loose. We tightened it and all agreed that it went away. We even shook the wheels when we swapped around tires Saturday. Even Sunday I should've made the decision to pull the assembly and run home to through a new bearing in. Looking back I would've had time before the challenge. woulda/coulda/shoulda Last edited by mccanixx; 07-29-2009 at 07:46 AM. |

I had gotten home early enough today to do the bearing. Since the grease won't be here till tomorrow I thought I'd see if I had enough to do one side.
I did, just enough. I had already gotten the old race out of the housing. I had kept one the last time I did this so I used it to slid the new one into place. Then you need to install the large C clip. A set of internal/extrenal pliers is handy for that. After I had cleaned the packaging grease off I proceeded to pack the bearings with new grease. I find it easier to just put a blob in my left hand and roll, pack, squeeze the grease into the bearing with my right. It's fairly quick and effective. Ahh more stock studs I don't need I guess I'll use the press since the hub is dismounted. 10 minutes later. Now that I have everything together I can assemble. Put the bearing in the outside and install the oil shield. Then press the hub into the bearing. After that flip it over and push the bearing onto the hub. Install the inner grease shield and your done.
Around an hour later I have a complete assembly that I can install at my leisure. The whole thing took about an hour. Now I do want to check to make sure the caliper braket is nice and square still and check the run-out on the rotor to see if it survived. |

Wow. That was one destroyed bearing and hub! Of course, the work needed to fix it makes me appreciate the one piece nature of the fourth gen Camaro front hubs.... though they are quite pricey, the convenience (and no need for packing bearings) is pretty much worth it.

Are you guys speaking of the Smackdown event at Northfield Park this weekend? If so, I'll see you guys there. I'll be #50 SM in an 08 STi. My 39k WRX decided to spin a rod bearing, so no STX for me. I was talking with a local ESP driver about taking my WRX to ESP next year(he came in 2nd to you in Toledo) and he said he is leading the charge to get the WRX moved to BSP , where evo's seem to rule. He is also making stickers of Calvin peeing on the WRX or Subaru logo. Do you guys think that will happen? The WRX moving to BSP would suck, for me at least. |

Frankly, the WRX has been in ESP since 2002. No one had a problem with it until this year, when Greg and I started building ours to the limit. Drew Little did run his at Nationals last year and finished 4th in ESP (but a few seconds behind the class winner). I would just monitor Fastrack updates (if you're an SCCA member), and make sure you write in ASAP if there is a request for member comment regarding a move. The soonest it could happen would be 2011, since by the time any member comment would be requested, submitted and then acted on, the cars couldn't be moved for 2010. The '08+ WRX, however, is on the books to be moved, only because of the turbo available on the '09. While the powers-that-be say that it's not a foregone conclusion, the fact that the 2009 Impreza 2.5GT was classed in BSP (and it's a lesser car in stock trim) to me indicates that there is very little chance the '08+ cars won't be moved. But, we can fight any other change in WRX classing tooth and nail; just make sure you bring the facts about why it shouldn't be moved (ie., how it is not the same as an STi, as too many non-Subaru people think; how similar cars remain in the class, like the AWD turbo DSMs, etc.). Now, back to your regularly scheduled hellastupid build thread. Karen |

Yep were are speaking of the nora challenge event. I may be there but seeing as the city has the entire end of my driveway tore up getting the trailer out Sunday may be difficult if it's not done by then. Sorry bout your wrx. Ah yes the same gentleman who insulted Karen and I on another forum. I really don't care what he does. I met him, I understand his position. Doing the calvin sticker is a perfect example of being stuck in 1989. In regards to the move. That's really, ultimately, up to the membership and the SEB. If it is put out for letters I would be the first to encourage every card carrying subaru driver to write a letter. Just look at the tremedous resource we have right here. Karen has the timeframe for moving right on. In regards to personal opinions and car classing. I think that esp should get faster. I don't know why a class should live in a time capsule-------eternally crankng out the Blue Oyster Cult. It will come down to numbers and they will more than likely have them. Which is where were at today. It's true the car's been there since 2002 and in my feeble mind here's what I see: 2002, 2003 car's too new no one is hacking it up for ESP 2004 2005 STi's/Evo's are out, they're quicker than the wrx, they're built, win and moved. 2006-2008 Why waste the money/time you're just going to be moved. 2009 I say f it I'm wasting the money/time I'll at least have a couple seasons before I have to do a turbo swap. The car's are getting long in the tooth so they are becoming more prevelant in *SP |

Not to derail the building part of the build thread too much more, but...
Still, in 2003, the cars are being built for STX. While there isn't as much "hacking up" in ST* as in SP, according to the "experts," it doesn't require much more than an ST* build for the WRX to be competitive in ESP. Of course, I guess it depends on the definition of "competitive" -- do you mean "can trophy" or "can win"? Quote:
