Previous fills were what?
Silver up-tick notwithstanding you could prolly run this oil a helluva lot longer than 3K miles...yet you added 3/4ths of a qt. makeup? Track days/abuse? Tune/mods? EDIT: ahh, I see now your profile shows E85 and well beyond OEM power/tq. Last edited by oaklandish_WRX; 06-26-2014 at 08:50 PM. Reason: reeding |

His other thread also says a good amount of track time.

How many miles on the oil and are you protuned? I wonder if you need 15W-50?
With your mods and track time, you might want to consider paying for comments from a tribologist. http://www.dysonanalysis.com/Dyson_A...s/Welcome.html Need more details. -Dennis |

Here is mine. First two oil changes done at the dealership using Subaru's 5w30 synthetic. 4 auto-x's were also done on this oil. I'm currently running T6 5w40 and right off the bat the car does seem quieter than with the 5w30.

Haha I think baby oil is thicker than some of these energy conserving oils. Hopefully the RT6 will keep things happy with my weekend autox/daily driving. After a few more UOA's on the RT6, I think I will give the delo 5w40 a try.

Spotted this on another thread and thought about the occasional high copper readings people see that no one understands...
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...2&postcount=13 Still waiting for Blackstone on my last oil change and the one before that (both Subaru 5w30), and waiting for 32k to roll up so I can change out the first fill of Mobil 1 0w40 and compare. Shouldn't be too long. |

Here's my most recent UOA. There's another one still at Blackstone. Should get it in a few days.
Not sure on the 0w20 comments. This is *as ALWAYS* Subaru Idemitsu 5w30 with a splash of T6 for topping up. Same as all my oil changes. Next one is also the same. I think bearing in mind the shearing, I'll be checking up on my current Mobil1 0w40 fill at around the 3k mile point. |

There's no way in hell I'd risk my engine on oil that drops an entire grade (BS: "little low for a 5W/30 grade...just right for a 20"). Shorter OCI or better oil is what you need, IMHO. TBN be-damned, that oil is DONE.

kabz, if the viscosity drops below 9.3 cSt's the oil has sheared to a 20 grade. That's why Blackstone was confused by the viscosity based on the information you provided to them on the info slip vs the results of the uoa. This is NOT just a Mobil1 5W-30 problem like some people think. This is just a feature of most low HTHS, Resource Conserving GF5 oils. Sorry, you can't have your cake and eat it too (shear stability and running an oil as recommended in the owner's manual). It happens on occasion with a few oils, depending on the driving conditions, but it's big news when a GF5 oil stays in grade in a Subaru turbo. At least wear looks good. Are you stock? Your RT6 top up must've been very little. Smart move on the switch to a more robust oil! -Dennis Last edited by bluesubie; 07-01-2014 at 09:49 PM. Reason: Details |

Dennis,
Agreed, but for my driving, metals have been great, and we'll see how well the 0w40 does. I guess I've been driving a bit harder and going longer on the interval, so you can see how the Subaru 5w30 has sheared down. Definitely concerning! Especially for any hard use. I sure hope the next UOA on 5w30 (23k - 28k) is a bit better. As I said currently on M1 0w40 Euro Car Formula and not seeing any consumption yet. I'll have that one analyzed after I've done 3k on it. Best Wishes, Jonathan PS: Insolubles creeping up may mean I could use a new air filter? Last edited by kabz; 07-01-2014 at 11:23 PM. |

Insolubles is more representative of oil filter performance, but it's fine.

check my M1 0w40 UOA from a page back to get a good idea of what to expect.

Latest UOA from Blackstone. Very similar to the last one, as you might expect. Oil is shearing down even worse. |

Try up to 8,000 miles next? Yeah good luck with that. Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20 starts thicker than this and will likely shear less than this (percentage wise). I don't know if this oil has been reformulated a second time (the first time was when they switched to GF5), but this oil used to hold up a bit better than this. /Uncle Scotty mode on/ dOOOOOOOOOd! I hope you've learned yer lesson cupcake ..... and will STOP running this kiddie fOO-fOO juice before it's too late and you spin a bearing. Yer lucky it ain't blowed up yet. /Uncle Scotty mode off/ -Dennis |

I wanna get an oil sample for you guys from the ej22 I just took out of my car. I rode out the t6 for almost 8,000 miles.
Mostly because I thought the engine was coming out sooner, so I didn't wanna change the oil for a short time....but things got pushed back so I just changed the filter at like 6,000. I have one blackstone sample container left too... |

'05 2.5RS with a 116k mile engine Mobil 1 10W-30 High Mileage Subaru blue oil filter new Subaru air filter ....full track weekend at VIR and a bunch of 600+ mile road trips afterwards. this was my first time on track so i didn't know how the oil would handle it...knowing what i know now i would have left it in for twice as long. i wanted to find an ACEA A3 rated 30wt (didn't want to go to a thicker 40 weight to keep the oil temps sane with no oil cooler of any kind) with good HTHS properties and in the absense of German Castrol at my local parts place, this was the answer. i think it did fine but that's also easy to say when you've topped off 2.5 qts in 3300 miles. at least the wear metals are nice and low. i used 1 quart at the track, the rest in just driving around on the street. the engine seems to really drink this stuff compared to Rotella, and at $9 a quart i'm not going to keep dumping it in. i think i'll stick with T6 for any street and rallycross stuff and maybe do the M1 HM stuff again just for track days since it did so well. |

100C = 13. 40C = 84.71 HTHS around 3.7 ish This would be just a bit thinner at operating temp than M1 0w40 but more stable if I am seeing this correctly. Still not to thick for this ej253 na engine. There have been reports of 05 rs engines having issues with burning oil due to poor ring break in either from factory or by the person who buys the car new and doesn't drive it the right way for those first few miles. So keep that in mind. bluesubie, what do you think? |
