This doesnt even have to do with subies, but I was shocked someone actually thought this. My friend (F) and I were standing next to my car after school and he says:
F: Is it easy to parallel park with AWD? Me: What do you mean? F: Don't all the wheels turn since its AWD? Me: Do you really think that? Look at my front wheels, there are slightly turned... (confused face) F:Oh! I thought AWD means all the wheels turn. O.o WTF? I couldn't tell if he was trolling me or not.

In her defense, 4-wheel steering cars do exist.

I don't mean to be a dick, but your friend sounds like he's talking out of his ass. The tires are nothing special, the engines are nothing special, the suspension is a little modified, but the big thing is just the electronics (lights, PA, computer, etc). Pretty much any WRX or STI in good working order should have no problem outrunning a cop car--I'm not encouraging such an action (they've got radios, man), but understand those things really are not fast at all.

Also the Mitsubishi VR-4's from the mid-90's. Word was they discontinued it because too many people were banging curbs due to the elevated turning capacity... Dunno about how true that is, but still kinda funny.

Wish that were the case in Jersey, i've seen supercharged interceptors haul ass. my buddy tried getting away in his gti and needless to say he caught up in seconds from a dead stop on the side of the road.

Interceptors aren't supercharged. Sounds like a case of an overconfident GTI driver.

That's weird, I guess he was wrong. he drives a 97 golf, I think his perception of power is slightly skewed because of it
@ross, I don't think most wrx's would outrun a crown vic, the regular v8 plus rwd should be plenty to at least keep even with a 205 on the straights... And, to tie all this back on topic, my buddy mentioned above, when driving my car back from the shop after getting aligned: "I just did a 1-3 gear pull, your car is terrifying. I'm never going wot in this again, your doin 80 as soon as you put the pedal down" Not really funny, but I had to tie it in |

They have SOME in Jersey. Obviously you're correct about the average cruiser but with the population density Jersey has, ya have crowded roads and the policing traffic isn't about law enforcement. It's big business and some towns as well as the state have made some hefty investments. Plus ya also have a bunch of sports cars they took from drug dealers and whatnot cruising the highway. I would imagine ya see it from time to time in any state. Maybe justnotice here a bit more because we're such a small state. |

Some places have modified police cars....this is from wikipedia. I'm guessing it depends on the geographical location and crime rates.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_car Mechanical modifications Modifications a police car might undergo include adjustments for higher durability, speed, high mileage driving and long periods of idling at a higher temperature. This is usually accomplished by heavy duty suspension, brakes, calibrated speedometer, tires, alternator, transmission and cooling systems, and also sometimes includes slight modifications to the car's stock engine or the installation of a more powerful engine than would be standard in that model. It is also usual to upgrade the capacity of the electrical system of the car to accommodate the use of additional electronic equipment. |

Lol I love this convo... My bro is a cop, he has a regular interceptor, not slow, probably beats my wrx. Now the police station in the next city just got srt8s with no speed limiter when the lights are engaged. I don't know if anything else. With that said, most people can only drive their 12 second cars in a straight line anyways so that 1 second faster doesn't mean much when being chased. Just my 2 cents on the subject and also I'm not saying cops all know how to drive but some do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Crown_Victoria_Police_Interceptor The 2004-2011 Police Interceptor is rated for 187 kW (254 PS; 251 hp) because of the addition of a new air intake system. This includes a new airbox that resembles the Mercury Marauder airbox (raised airbox lid, deeper bottom), with an integrated 80 mm (3.1 in) mass airflow (MAF) sensor that is part of the airbox lid. This allows for much more precise flow calibration and reduces the chances of air leakage. The P71 zip tube (the flexible rubber hose between the throttle body and MAF outlet) is also used to reduce NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) as well as transfer air from the airbox to the throttle body with minimal flow resistance. |

Yeah it does one second is a very large difference. Especially if the cop is stopped.
Here is a wrx with a 12.9 and the mustang got a 12 flat. It's a very big lead. |

How often are you going to be running from a stop and not making any turns? The second won't mean that much. and if I remember right, a second is about 3 car lengths.
