I have one of these that I don't plan on using, as I've read that the cobb stage 2 may not like CAI's

hey guys I JUST got this thing yesterday and installed it yesterday evening.

I'll get a chance to do some logging on sunday. I did take a digital caliper to the tube - it's 65mm.

Also, I got this email from K&N regarding the product:

Quote:
Mr. Luhr;

Thank you for your interest and compliments on our product.

All of our Intake kits are introduced to the market only after extensive testing on our dynos. Not just one vehicle but several are used and if possible brought in from different areas. All of our kits are tested to assure no DTC's are triggered. We also install kits on vehicles in order to monitor, after development and introduction of the kit, and gain additional information as the vehicle is used in everyday driving conditions.
We appreciate your offer to test but we have an in-house test area capable of performing any testing to assure fuel trims are within parameters set by the factory. Any additional testing not performed at K&N is handled by an independent test facility that is able to supply us with certified documentation.

Again thank you for your e-mail, we appreciate hearing from our customers.

The question I asked him was specifically about Air/Fuel ratios and whether or not he could confirm how much this would mess with them, but as you see, he totally dodged the issue by not saying either way.

St00pid question but what does the stock one measure? I'm assuming 65.

hey guys. My life has been extraordinarily busy the past few weeks. Can you say 72hr work weeks and nightshift, to boot?

anyway, I finally got the K&N Typhoon installed as well as the TurboXS Tuna that I had from my WRX.

To answer Abe Froman's question, yes the stock is 65mm as well which bodes well for the Typhoon's prospective AFR characteristics.

I haven't logged the Tuna's wideband readings (because I don't have an rpm pickup nor a utec to provide rpm data) but I did do lots of observation.

At idle, of course, it runs a very steady 14.7.
At onset of WOT, it quickly drops to about 13.5 then rapidly reaches 10.5 (as boost reaches 15psi).
At 4000-4500 the AFR drops down to around 10.3 and then begins climbing again and by redline it's a nice steady 10.6.

That looks good to me!

As far as driving characteristics, around town, it presents NO herky-jerky throttle response and always feels ready to spool. At WOT, it does feel more open, but like any intake without tuning, any gains would be small. It mostly just seems more "ready to pounce" if that makes sense. It DOES have more pull as it approaches redline than it did with the stock intake. That much I'm sure of.

The kit is very comprehensive and includes a lot of small parts that, when assembled, look very good and professional. The kit works great. The nice thing about this kit, as many may have noticed, is it's a baffled shortram. The reasons this is good are:
-filter is in engine bay so it's easy to clean/change
-shorter tube has less flow-inertia so it has better throttle response
-baffle keeps engine heat out so you don't have skyrocketing intake temps

I'm a very satisfied customer!

That's what K&N's dyno plot looked like it should do.

How much was it?

I was going to sell it ... maybe it won't upset the Cobb stage 2 too much?

What kind of material is the baffle made of? I'd really like to see if I can make something to work with my shorty.

dammit the quickquote function isn't working <grumble>

grippgoat - i paid $239 from summitracing.com. It's special order for them. I have also seen them advertised at teaguesauto.com

Abe Froman - power wise, i only have this intake and a TurboXS Turboback (magnaflow+hiflowcat)

bigbobchamp - the baffle is made of thin sheet steel and has larger rubber-tube "gaskets" across the top to seal against the hood and then one small section (right next to the remote coolant tank) has a piece of thermal-reflective padding on it.

nhluhr, wondering which you like better the APS cai or the K&N baffled short ram. I will have a utec, and an SR40 turbo, downpipe, injectors, fuel pump. Thanks.

Thanks for the info nhluhr, sounds like they did their homework. Sidebar: Did your peak boost go up at all with the TXS catback?

I like this K&N better than the APS. I own an APS 65mm, and APS 70mm, and this Typhoon. I gave the APS intakes to friends (the 65 to a guy on stock ecu, the 70 to a guy with a utec) and kept the good loot for myself. This intake most likely will NOT work with any FMIC kit on the market so if that's important, this is NOT the intake for you.

My peak boost, as verified in Deltadash is about 15.5 (very brief peak) then it settles into about 14.5 and holds that pretty much to redline maybe dropping down to around 13.5 or 14, but not much boost taper at all.

This is pretty much identical to how the boost behaved with just the turboback before I did the intake.

edit - I should add that I have not at any point observed any creep whatsoever in my car. I am fairly sure that my VF39 is one of those equipped with the P18 exhaust housing but I haven't verified it yet so when I'm in there this weekend I'll take a close look and find out for sure.

nhluhr, I am not really interested in purchasing any FMIC so it looks like the short ram is perfect for me. Thanks for all your research!

Thanks again for the detailed info. I will also be curious as to the exhaust housing.
