MadDad Whisper exhausts...what's your experience? TUNERS WANTED!!!
I absolutely hate buying "replacement" parts, but once in a while you look for something better than the upgrade you got.
I'm at that point with my catback. I currently am running an Invidia 3" catless downpipe to a Greddy Evo2. I bought the Evo2 due to it's low volume and high flow capabilities. That being said, it doesn't really fit the look of my car (Saab 92x). The only exhaust that has intrigued me is the MadDad Whisper dual-tip catback. I love how it's a true 3" with no tapers. My only concern is whether the muffler is restrictive. What experiences do you guys have on this catback? I would LOVE some input from tuners. It is important that I have a high-flowing exhaust since I have a decently high-powered setup. Here is my list of power mods relative to this exhaust. swapped USDM STI 2.5l longblock Turbo XS TMIC 3" catless Invidia downpipe Turbo XS short ram intake Element GT52 turbo +injectors & pump Element Hydra + Hydramist water injection APS header Turbosmart EWG plumbed to downpipe Perrin inlet pipe I expect this setup to be running low to mid 400whp on pump + water injection. I want a catback that will support upwards of 500whp in case I want to do a c16 tune or get cams+ pistons or both. I really don't need much info on how this exhaust does on a stock setup since I'm far from stock. Thanks for the input! BTW, here's a pic of my exhaust on my car Here's the one I'm thinking about... Remember, the goal is to remain quiet, stay high-flowing, and improve looks. Thanks for the input in advance! |

BTW,
I wanted to thank Unabomber for his research here... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=677926 Comparing the WRX with the evo2 catback and stock down/midpipe vs. the maddad with the upgraded downpipe let's me know the maddad is similar in volume or less! Now, I need some info the how restrictive it is. The two cars I'm referring to on Unabomber's excel Year/Make/Model Silencer Axle back Cat back Mid Pipe Cat? Downpipe Cat? That exhaust looks tight. Any exhaust I get will have the rolled tip. I cant stand the way the ordinary tips look.
oh yea, bump |

I'm not a tuner but my experience with this exhaust is found in the following thread...
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1191620 I've ran a number of exhausts on my STI and my opinion with the Whisper is still unchanged. I don't think I'll be changing this one out for a while. Currently the car is running a GT30R with equal length headers and sounds much quieter than the Borla Hush I once had. The design and finish is much better built than the Borla as well. If you don't mind losing the boxer rumble pair this exhaust up with an equal length and I can assure you will love it. |

Thanks for chiming in.
I read the whole review. Very nice! I noticed that Jorge tuned a setup with this exhaust that was mentioned in your thread. I PM'd him to chime in on his thoughts. Also asked David Buschur to chime in from a previous tuning session. Last edited by keaniegenie; 05-30-2007 at 07:01 PM. |

I want a more OEM looking exhaust, even if it's louder than my evo2 as long as it can handle similar power levels. The highest hp cars I've found so far are high 300's and low 400's. |

I have a Bosal/SPT 3 inch midpipe to a very stock looking SPT 2.5 inch axleback and it is about the same loudness as my friends Evo2. Not really restrictive, but also not a straight through design. I don't know how much loss would be on the table at over 400whp as I only make 320 and am running catless. BTW I think the Evo looks great on your car the way it is. |

From listening to both running side by side the Stromung is louder than the Cobb. I have a twin tip Stromung full 3". The sound I don't think you can beat. It is very quiet though. All the "quiet" mufflers are pretty close. Hush, Whisper, Stromung, Cobb, Prodrive, EVO2.
Flow is very subjective it's going to be hard to say which one flows better. Could be the downpipe design restricing things etc. etc. but you know that. |

in order to lower the volume you must give up some flow. there is no way around that. however the amount of power lost at low power levels like ours, meaning sub 400whp, will be minimal and not noticed. i think the maddad exhaust is a very nice piece so i say go for it and dont worry about it not being a complete no res, no muffler straight through design.

What about the APS 3" dual-tip?
I guess the largest downside there is you might need to purchase it as a whole turbo-back kit. I have the dual-tip on my car, and it looks great + sounds great. Fitment was amazing as well http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/us...wrx-hoe-r8.htm |

doood, the whisper is my favorite part of my car. it also helped me trap at 106 with the usual vf39/topmount/pinks/ecutek setup. absolutely no drone in the wagon either...i say do it.

What I'll probably do is once my car is 100% tuned, I'll give this exhaust a try. My Hydra will tell me very quickly if this thing is choking up my system. With the MadDad 2 week guarantee, I can always take it off and ship it back if it doesn't suit my setup. |

I have to say, SPT has a GOOD exhaust...not obnoxious, I don't know how quiet is compared to MadDad...but it looks stock, but SHINY! 3 inch catback...it sounds GOOD, good boxer rumble idle...but nothing loud really.
Plus WAY cheaper price! I got mine for 400 basicly. That is with the 20***37; off SPT deal I got at the dealership |

I didn't mean for this response to sound like a "volley" or defensive at $400 exhausts(I'm not picking on the SPT - heck we're a Bosal distributor and have been one of their larger resellers in the Subaru community and still are - their products are the best value you can get) and we know they prdoucts are a great value), but seeing that made me feel I should at least layout some details that contribute to the MadDad Whispers price. The reality is we should be selling it for $699 as it's the lowest margin product we make in the entire MadDad lineup. Hopefully we'll make up the difference in volume(no pun intended ) . Happy Driving and enjoy the boxer rumble... Rich |

I'm running a MadDad 3" whisper back on my '06 WRX - I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything!
I'm also running the maddad header & up pipe combo. I have a typical VF39 swap with an STI intercooler. The car spools from from just about idle, has plenty of power, and sounds GREAT! P.S. I was running COBB ap map for the vf39 swap. Then I had Mohamad from MZM in Austin, Tx protune the car last Fall. VERY mild tune (14 lb boost) and it made 275 to 280 wheel hp on his conservative dyno... |

straight-through muffler?
Is the madDad muffler a straight-through design? So I could take a flashlight and shine it inside the muffler and see all the way through to the piping on the other end without baffles obstructing the "circle" of exhaust flow. I can see through with my SPT, but it has huge semi-cirlce baffles that restrict exhaust path
Like this JIC muffler in these pics: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...tback+no+taper |
