Haha this is why I keep stressing getting a tripod. It makes a world of difference! VR/IS is great and all, but having a good steady tripod still beats it out.

Photo looks pretty good...the composition is good, but it could use a tiny bit more exposure, and you've got some chromatic aberration in the trees that you can easily fix in Lightroom.

I think the picture looks properly exposed on Flickr. They always tend to look a little different when I put them on here. I don't really know what chromatic abberation is so I don't know what to look out for. (noob alert)

Neither do cars with no reflections, but it seems to be currently popular.

Anyway, I think it is highly dependent on the car and the setting.

Raw conversion, f3.5, iso 400, 63s, manual focus, lit with cell phone flashlight.

Not my best work, it was about 30* out and I was in a bit of a hurry to get back in the car. I took 3 pics total, I tried to overlay a couple of them but the exposure/time between shots was too much and made the star trails look odd. I tried to use a piece of paper as a diffuser for the light from my phone, but it just wasn't bright enough. So, how do you shoot a dark car at night without spending money...?

Yeah, chromatic aberration (aka "CA") is usually the green, red, yellow, or purple fringing that happens on high contrast edges, just like the trees you have there. Some lenses are built with special coatings to help prevent it from happening, but it can still happen no matter what. Thankfully, LR has built-in tools to help get rid of it, and if those don't work, you can always just get down and dirty with desaturating the colors in those areas.

First of all, it's really really dark. Going with a dark theme can work well in some cases, but in this one doesn't really make sense since you've gone with a selective saturation and the whole photo is dark, not just certain areas used to highlight others. The car is a bit close to the edge of the frame on the right and the sky looks like it was pretty blown out and overcast. I also would've turned the wheels to face the camera.

Yes, I completely agree. Never once have I said "eliminate all reflections" from an automotive photo because that really isn't natural at all. Reducing reflections so that they aren't distracting is very different from having no reflections at all. I don't remember seeing any automotive photo in recent memory that has had all reflections eliminated from it and has also been popular.

Yeah, unfortunately you have to remember that using something to diffuse the light will only decrease the amount of light on the subject, so it's actually often better to use bare lights in situations like this.

This situation isn't ideal by any means. You'd have to use a longer shutter speed than 63 seconds for sure, especially since a cellphone light isn't going to be anywhere close to being strong enough. If you really don't want to spend money on proper lighting for this, I'd just try using a really long shutter speed to try to get some exposure on the car. Otherwise, there really isn't a good option without using some artificial lighting.

It's an amazingly bright flashlight for a cell phone, but next time I will bring something brighter. I always have noise issues if I push the exposure too long, I was thinking multiple exposures would be the way to go. I had my remote, so I could have set it up for multiple shots but like I said, it was cooold and I was eager to get my butt back in my heated seat.

I missed the last post on 'luck' but thanks for the insight and for the congrats! I am quite happy to be back in a Subie.

This definitely isn't the right time of year to do any sort of night automotive photos because of the temperature alone. Remember, the colder it is, the more likely the glass on the front of your lens will fog up because of condensation, and thus you'll get very foggy/hazy photos. Unless you're trying to get a specific type of photo at night (such as specific winter constellations), then just wait a few months until it's warmer at night

Noise really shouldn't be an issue if you use a long exposure and a low ISO. I've done 5-minute long exposures before and the noise is really negligible once you start processing the RAW file.

Anyone need Photoshop for free? Get CS2 100% legit direct from Adobe...sure, it doesn't have the nice content-aware stuff that the newer versions have, but it's still very capable. I was using CS2 all the way up until 2011. Keep in mind it won't work with Lion or Mountain Lion for Mac.

I'm assuming this allows multiple layer capability? I could start practicing using this then. Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, absolutely! Layers were introduced way back in PS 3.0 back in 1996

Oh Ok, maybe it was the over all look of the photo that made the car look sharper. I would love you use my 85 for rolling shots but I'm not going to have enough room. Do you think my 50 would work? Any "cheap" recommendations for Canon?

Tried something a little different. I couldn't get the car straight and I couldn't go straight on at it because of a ton of snow. OK, enough excuses....

Even the 50mm will be tough for rolling shots, especially if you're on a cropped sensor camera. You'll need a lot of space between you and the car for a rolling shot even at 50mm, and don't forget that it's harder to get a good crisp shot with a longer focal length (especially without IS/VR). Honestly, if you have the kit 18-55mm lens, you'd probably be well off for a cheap solution to doing rolling shots.

Yeah, this is one of those photos where you really want to go for symmetry, and since you couldn't get it totally straight on the way you wanted, it's not quite gonna get where you want it to be no matter what
