But the general (non-technical, every day) people just basically heard "android copied apple." I have heard this at least three or four times from my friends, and I have to correct them and say how it was Samsung, and also how outdated the phones were. It isn't even relevant I either company at this point, but I don't think the majority of people recognize this.

But they are coming out with a bigger screen, LTE, and maybe NFC. We're talking revolutionary technology here.

No NFC, but the turn by turn navigation is the for sure winner here... Epic.

Imagine having that in a phone? My mind is officially blown.

No NFC on the new iPhone? Wat. How will they use their Google Wallet knock off software to pay for things?

I use Google Wallet a lot and I find it to be a nice feature/tool. NFC in general is pretty cool technology.

Serious question though. Are you buying the iPhone 5 no matter what is announced on Wednesday?

If it was me personally, if it is like a 4 to 4s change, I would consider switching to a sIII. But my wife will enjoy the iPhone more, and she is upgrading from a 3GS, so unless I can talk her into taking my 4s, then we will end up with the 5 no matter what.

Why anyone buys one of these smartphones before they've been out for several weeks is beyond me. Someone will be bitching about iOS 6 Day one, same for Windowz 8 phone. Let the masses beta test for you first?

I'm still on a 3GS. Will be upgrading to the 5 but probably after iOS 6.1 and I know how LTE is in SoCal. Might switch to Verizon.

Probably, my phone is a couple years old. I would do it just for the spec bump. The IP4 I have is getting a little slow.

I have zero issue with the functionality of my iP4 but if the 5 has a much better Camera I will probably upgrade.

Apple for lyfe.

Like I said before, I actually don't have anything against Apple products and i do think that they have their places and uses. I used to own an iphone4, i bought I phones for both my parents and my wife and normally recommend the iphone to most of my less tech savy friends. With that said, I admit that I have been completely put off by the recent lawsuit craze and the way apple is handling itself. It feels like instead of innovating and making the iphone better than the competition they are trying to drag the competition down to the iphone level.

Now, I will still buy the iphone 5 for my wife because I still like to have sexy time in the future but for everybody else, apple will not be my recommendation.

Yep. It was great 5 years, but it's really dated now. They really need to overhaul the skin/interface code to allow things to be more dynamic and personalize-able. I still think iOS has the best fine detail/soft touches, but as a whole, they need to revamp a lot of stuff.

I'm still curious, but so far I'm fond of the Nokia 920 and the S3.

I used to agree with this, but with the recent addition of wood grain, leather with stitching, etc. in the UI is gag inducing.

I mean, really Apple? Really?

This is what I don't understand (not trolling, I swear). How do you have such blind faith in a company that you will buy what they make, no matter what - not knowing the specs, the features, or the price. On top of that, without even trying what the competition has to offer (not directed at you two, but in general).

If I were to guess, it would be either:
a) they have so many apps and music that they think they won't have the functionality on Android or W8 (for apps), or they think they can't transfer their music
b) want something very easy to use and simple
or
c) lazy and don't want to do research and rather someone just tell them what to buy (trolling a bit here)

I also don't know why it bothers me when people do this.

Don't get me wrong, I will likely be watching some live blog about the announcement on Wednesday, curious as to what is actually announced after all the rumours. And if it blows me away and still does when my contract is up next spring, I would consider an iPhone.

It will be underwhelming. That has been the pattern with the entire Apple product line. People expect X, get Y = :closeenoughmeme:

Not to mention it get's hyped up so much that it rarely meets expectation.

IIRC, it is used only for the Find Friends app. The Gamecenter App has some billiards looking theme, but everything else is standard fare iOS.

Nope! That's the stock whatever Apple is calling their Latitude ripoff. IIRC it's also in the calendar app.

It's even infected OSX, here's iCal:

Apple has a way of doing things. You know it's going to have great specs, a few new features and awesome industrial design. It will always cost the same money (less than what I can sell the old one for) 199, 299, 399. Also, there are tons of leaks this time around. Ars almost has a whole review already. My wife and my brother and 3 of my friends own iPhones and we all text for free over imessage, so that's a nice feature. Other people may not like the launcher, but it works great for my needs, 100 apps are all 2 taps away.

All that being said, I have used Android phones and work with several people who use them. They are good phones and I can see why they like them. I just don't happen to like the UI. I haven't tried JB yet, so maybe my opinion will change when I do get a chance to really try it. I would be more interested in the Nokia as I like the industrial design and I like the WP8 interface.

Oh God my eyes! Although, I was talking more about the fluidity of the animations and transitions. The scrolling and elasticity of the bounce feels natural and nice. Android pre-Jelly Bean always felt a bit clunky IMHO - especially the earlier versions (like HoneyComb and below, but even ICS didn't get it all right). I know, bounce elasticity and all that is very flaky in the grand scheme of things, but all these small things add up to a very nice user experience - but no, not with that wood grain vomit.

I got a chance to play with a Nokia 900 recently and animation and scrolling feels very very nice as well. My problem was that it wasn't immediately intuitive when you can/should scroll vertically or horizontally. Most times it's very clear as things are cut off, but there were times when words met the edge perfectly, or I felt there should be more stuff but there wasn't, etc.

Yep, and that's why I still have a 3GS - ok granted, in my last job when I was doing iOS apps I got a 4 and that filled my need for an upgrade for a some time. But yeah, my 3GS works and though the 4 and 4s are definitely improved, I certainly wasn't sold on upgrading to them.

I'm really happy to see Android really coming to it's own now - I was really disappointed w/ my Honeycomb tablet, so much hype for it but it was just not good. But as I mentioned before, Jellybean feels top notch.

And I'm still interested in Win Mobile - the one ecosystem I haven't tried yet. The 920's low light/OIS capabilities have been impressed, but with an early Nov launch date, and them fibbing the advertisement has me somewhat reserved. Not sure if I can wait for launch and reviews. We'll see.

I don't get how people can blindly adopt the next piece of hardware/software like that. Competition is good, and fanboy-ism really goes counter to that. If the iPhone 5 doesn't come with NFC like rumoured, I think it'll spell really bad news; that or a very quick 5S refresh next spring/summer.
