Loaded Legacy/Outback strut question...
OK, as you can see, I'm currently driving a 92 LS AWD. I'm into navigational rallies, and as some of you probably know they can be quite rough. My car's still got its original struts on it, with 251,000km on them now. I'm real worried about having one of them grenade on me next time I head out into the woods, as top-outs are fairly frequent over crests. Now, I don't tend to drive very hard in the city, so on-road performance isn't that much of an issue for me. Here's the loaded question though: does anyone think it would be possible to swap the struts and springs (and maybe the axles if need be) out of an early outback into my legacy? It would give me increased ground clearance supposedly, possibly a softer ride (better bump absorption and less swearing after frost heaves) and reduce my destruction worries. Any idea if it'll work?
Thanks |

Hmmm, I dunno. That's a totally different body style than the Outbacks. I'd be surprised if the suspension bits were compatible?
Isn't that body style quite a bit smaller than the current wagons? That will affect suspension geometry quite a bit. I would think you would be better off going with an aftermarket part, if they're available. |

The outback suspension isn't that great. You are better going aftermarket.

Pat Richard used OBS springs on his RS when he was first starting out...
they are stiffer and add more ride height... i'd say that is a yes... as the RS suspension will fit the Legacy... j. www.subiegal.com |

Maybe consider the suspension from a 92-94 Legacy Turbo. I'd think it'd be much more likely to fit (same body style) and it's a stiffer suspension.

I have an outback. I talked to the guys at JC Sports and they told me that if I put regular Legacy struts and springs on my OTB, that my back would seem to sag.

Sag? I don't believe so... At least one person here has put a GT suspension (struts/springs) on his OB with no visible difference. He did have to get GT wheels, as the 15" OB wheels don't clear the strut seats (or something similar).

Rich,
I believe it is the fat OB tires that won't clear plain old Legacy rear strut spring seats... Doug |

Doug - so narrower tires would clear? I'm getting ready to follow in your footsteps, I think. Picked up a used GT suspension (springs, struts) and was looking around for wheels. If I could somehow use the same 15" wheels with narrower tires, that'd make me happy (I think...).
