Question MY04 WRX into MY00 RS.. fuel tank sensor CEL?

I'm looking at purchasing a MY00RS with a MY04 WRX engine. The question I have is: Have any of you experienced a CEL as a result of the missing second fuel tank sensor in the RS tank? I believe the code is P1446.

If so, what have you done to remedy the situation? I am going to send the ECU to be reflashed and they (Cobb) told me they should be able to clear the code, but just in case that doesn't work I'd like to have other options.

TIA,
-Mike.

Try searching. I have posted on this numerous times. The long and the short of it is they added a sensor in 2003 and any tank before that will not have the sensor. You can trick the ECU using the other sensor or deal with the code. Cobb Tuning may be able to remove it, but I haven't had them do it yet. No negative effects except a CEL.

OK, thanks. I read several of your posts on this... good info to have.

When you finally add the pin and tap one of the other fuel sensors, could you please post the instructions? I'd like to attempt to tackle this myself if at all possible.

Thanks!

Unhappy

One more quick bump in case anyone has anything to add.

As it stands I need to make sure this CEL is cleared before buying the car since a failed emissions test means no registration, title transfer, etc.

Trey Cobb says they can definitely remove the CEL. I still say my solution would work just as well. All you have to is find a sensor giving the same normal operating voltages and the ECU knows no differently.

I'll have to see if my V7 ECU cares about that sensor or not. If it doesn't then I won't be bothering. If it does, I'll be fixing it before October is up.

I had 2 CEL codes from keeping my gas tank and swapping an 04 STi engine and ECU. Trey was able to remove both, but like Jon said, it won't negatively affect the vehicle's driving ability, it's just annoying to look at.

Yes, I understand but it will affect my ability to register my car and pass the OBDII scan required for emissions testing unfortunately.

I am having the ecu sent to Trey soon so we'll see what can be done.

Thanks for the feedback.

Fuel tank sensor control valve, B137:23

Ign SW ON (Engine OFF)
ON: 1 or less
OFF: 10-13

Engine ON (Idling)
ON: 1 or less
OFF: 13-14

Not sure what it does... I'll have to consult the mechanism and function section.

ECU should go out today. If Cobb has no luck with it I'lll have to try something else...

I'll keep this post updated.

Thanks,
-Mike.

Mike, so you must have bought the one that imprezaclipse was selling huh? Man, I wished I could have got over there from the West Coast. Just wasn't to be. Oh, well. Enjoy! Hopefully, the car is everything you wanted it to be. He sent me some pictures. Looks like he did a nice job.

So 2003+ has an additional sensor beyond the Fuel Gauge sensor and sub sensor?

I only found one that my 2002 wiring harness didn't have... Did you find something else?

Yep. I hope it's nice too... I'm flying up there and driving back down to atl.

Cobb said they should have no troubles clearing the code but it will take a little more time since it's not a common one.

Mike, Cobb has charged my CC and the ECU is heading back to me as I post this. They must have cleared the cell since they did not call me to tell me otherwise.
