Default So I Got To Meet/Have Dinner With Royce Gracie Last Night

My roommate/long time friend's parents own a Tai Kwon Do school here in Katy and one of the people they know got Royce Gracie to come to the school and do some classes with their students. I was invited to help out and take pictures. Royce is UFC 1,2 and 4 champion, and a amazing fighter and part of the Gracie Jujitsu family ofcourse. Also just a downright cool guy. He was really talkitive, chatted with me a bit(I dont know much about fighting, and I was just telling him how impressed I was with everything, and just how neat this is).

That was one of his fights btw lol. Hearing him talk about fighting, you know he just loves it. Quite the honor.

Nice!!!! He's coming down to my school to do some training and teaching with us (Gracie Barra TX in Clear Lake).

He's a really cool guy (as are all of the Gracies!). I've had the honor of training/meeting a few of them.

Great honor indeed!

Oh yeah, your friend owns a Tae Kwon Do (Korean, not Chinese ) school.

Thank you for the correction, Im unfortunatly not too up on the fighting thing. Ill sit there and watch two guys beat the snot outa each other, but thats about the extent of it haha.

But after meeting him last night, talking with him about fighting, and seeing just what he can do (alot of these moves he was teaching the students in slow motion, then watching him use those moves I was like holy crap...Id be boned if I EVER got into a brawl with this guy)...it kinda intrigues me.

No problem. It's just one of the arts I actually trained in (BB in WTF TaeKwonDo, BB in Tomiki-Ryu Aikido, currently training in Gracie Barra BJJ).
In all honesty, if it intrigues you that much, you should look into doing a bit of BJJ training. It's a great work out and the science behind a lot of it is amazing. Some of the things you learn (how to move, joint manipulation, defense) is very valuable!

If you are interested, let me know. I can get you a free training session down here at my school (www.graciebarratx.com) training with Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhaes! Great guy and AWESOME JiuJitsu practioner!

Understood. I'm hoping to be able to last a bit longer before mine. I slowly feel it getting worse and pain coming on earlier than usual. I'm sure a childhood filled with martial arts and skateboarding didn't help either.

Good luck with your surgery!

Just watched your posted fight......

That's an awesome display of Jiu Jitsu. It just goes to show, no matter how much bigger the other guy is, you can still mess him up something fierce. That was a very well executed omoplata!

It is awesome watching him fight, cause when he is on the ground he never stops moving, watch some of the new kids in UFC do it, and they just use the grappling time as rest, and try to punch, but he was always snaking around, trying to find a hole to wedge through, and then eventually rip someones arm out of their socket.

Now I want to watch some of the old UFC tapes, anyone have them and want to host a viewing party?

BJJ is too difficult for me (but I guess there is always practice). I HATE the oma-plata (SP?)!

He's a master at what he does! I have pretty much every UFC tape/DVD from UFC 1!

I takes TONS of practice to get "good". You'd be surprised how much you learn in a short amount of time. But then, you'll also realize how much you have to learn at the same time.

Again, I can get a free training session down here if you want to come and try it some time.

I mean, when he was in his prime and dominating the UFC, hair pulling, groin shots, open hand strikes, kneeing downed opponents, etc was legal. Matt Hughes was at the top of his game during that fight....it was a hella comeback for Royce. But, we was dominated for sure that fight.

I can't take anything away from that guy. His style laid down the foundation to the UFC. He is a stand up guy and very humble from what I hear.
I was blown away on how much UFC fighting has evolved. Before he would beat guys that were 10times stronger than him and do it 3-4 times in one night. Now fighters have learned how to use their strength while using his style of fighting.

BJJ is pretty rough and at least where I trained VERY grueling. I remember throwing up and getting dizzy on numerous occasions because I was so exhausted. Those are the days where you let yourself get choked out so you can get a little nap.

I'll agree that Royce didn't evolve with the rules, but honestly.. I think the rule changes ruined the UFC. No so much the no nut shots etc.... but in particular the three 5 min rounds. I've went to see many UFC's in the past few months and I think I have seen 3 knockouts total... and like 2 submissions. The rest have all been decisions. They roll around and bang a little bit, establish control and hold it looking just busy enough to not get stood up. They know they only have to hold on to take the round. If I wanted to watch that **** I'd watch boxing.

I say go back to the 1 round unlimited time bouts. That's a fight.

The Gracies, as a whole, are a GREAT group. We've had a few of them come through and train with us (Carlos Jr, Royce, Royler, etc) and they have been nothing but AWESOME. Hell, Royler stayed almost 2 hours after his "teaching" session to work with me on my high guard manuvers, just me and him on the mat (and this was before I was even training in BJJ).

BJJ training is VERY VERY intense. I know I've "accidently" got caught in something just so I could get a breather.

And I also agree with you for the most part, though I wouldn't say the rules changing "ruined" the UFC, because I do believe to keep it an organized, legally licensed sport, you did have to make some changes. I do think the groin shots, hair pulling, knee to the head of a downed opponent etc. needed to get revamped due to all of the permanent and brutal damage being caused.

The change of the 3-5 rounds instead of the "sudden death" style single round does suck. But, unfortunately, since UFC is regulated by the boxing commission, it had to follow some of their rules (ie: multiple rounds, etc.).

All in all, I still say it's safer than boxing as far as permanent, long term damage goes.

Congrats...that would be cool as hell but I always thought of him as a pompous ass (from his interviews on TV)...not as bad as BJ Penn's attitude...

No, he's just kind of a "no bull*****" type of guy. BJ Penn is actually REALLY cool too. He's very chill and relaxed and definitly has the "Hawaiian" attitude instilled in him. Hell, I lost tons of respect for Matt Hughes after his stint as TUF coach....talk about someone showing their ass.

Bisping is kind of getting on my nerves too. He seems really cool, but is coming off like a douchecanoe in the newest season.

Slightly OT: But has anyone played the UFC Undisputed 2009 demo for Xbox yet?

This game looks bad ass! Especially if I could figure out how to submit people easier.
