Default Question on new Tire Pressure Monitoring

Does this mean we cant use aftermarket wheels and still keep the Tire Pressure Monitoring system in place?

Or can the sensors be added to wheels and still work with the subaru system?

Good question. I never thought of that!

On my Z, you can just detach the TPM sensor from the factory wheel and put it on the aftermark wheel, very simple.

yeah... but that doesn't answer his question. I'm assuming "No, the TPM will not work with aftermarket wheels." applies.

I hope that is also the case with the Subaru system.

Some manufacturers use the ABS signals, I believe.

I don't know if it handles the case where all 4 wheels are flat.

How does it determine if you have flats vs. over inflated tires?

This FHI patent might hold some clues: US 5,526,861.

Interesting link. I thought the system would be similar to those aftermarket sensors that are strapped to the wheel inside the tire, but it appears as though Subaru has a different approach that mounts on the outside of the rim.

by outside i think they mean the outside the wheel itself which is still inside the tire.

these will be great to have for autocrossers if they provide accuratue numerical readouts, and not green for go, red for bad.

The subaru system does not give numerical numbers.

Numerical numbers?

j/k

The system operates as a tire pressure sensor that alerts a driver that a specific tire may be running low. Unfortunately, there is no reading of the exact pressure of the tire anywhere on the dash. I'd be interested in looking into the whole aftermarket wheel thing though. I'll have to do some research.

the two current ways i'm aware that these attach to the wheel are:

- strapping around the center of the wheel itself, inside the tire
-attached to the valve stem inside whe wheel

both of these currently can easily be transferred to to other, aftermarket wheels. wether or not the subaru one can be remains to be seen, but i think its a good bet.

i just hope the costs arent to outrageous so people like me with additional sets of wheels can afford to strap the monitoring equipment to them too.

Tirerack offers a product that does that, SmartTire . Consumer Reports tested it and found it Very good. Another product, called Intellivalve rated as Excellent.
