visiting san francisco....suggestions??
hi guys. i'm visiting sf for valentines day weekend with my gf. where can you guys suggest staying downtown? i was thinking union square but i'm not familiar with the area. and where are good restaurants to dine? i've heard from coworkers that pier 39 is a great spot. i've been to sf a couple times 8 or 9 years ago but i was 14. any suggestions would be great. thanks.

check out the meets forum on i-club.com if you have time to go to a meet over the weekend.
might wanna reask the question there as well as there are a lot more people from the bay area on that site. Enjoy your stay! |

Next time, when you try to shamelessly plug i-club, at least consider the question. |

stay away from pier 39... especially on valentines day... it will be murderours.
Plus all places to eat there suck and cost too much... (except of corse the InAndOut thats always great). I dont know about hotels cause i live in the city and never stayed in one, but search for like bed-and-breakfasts in the city - they are super romantic, gots a big bed ( ) and are ok priced usually. on Union square everyithing will cost an arm and a leg an be a ripoff... a nice place to eat that I like is Plouf http://www.plouf.citysearch.com/ its a very very neat French/Belge bisto. For Valentines day you wanna make reservations NOW or you will end-up in InAndOut in Pier39 if you like some other kind of food or some activities or smth advise post here and we will try to help you |

Im from NYC but i was just out there this past weekend. I just stayed at a hotel in oakland for cheaper than the prices in SF, and rented a car and drove out to SF when i wanted to party. Even oakland has some nice places to eat and hang out but you just have to know someone that lives there to know where they are. But all in all, i had a excellent time and i recomend the trip.

like people have said.. hotel in union square = $$$$$. If you're a baller tho, its all good. as far as restaurants.. you might wanna try XYZ. its pretty good and romantic and right near Moscone Center/union square. there are some good (romantic) seafood places in jack london square in oakland.. but u gotta drive through a rough patch of area to get there. dont worry, the police station is right there. There are also good places in Marin, north of SF. watch out for the shady valets tho. they hit my car with a porsche and didnt bother telling me about it

Pier 39 sucks, it's only for tourists. The hyatt by Embarcadero Center and Justin Hermin Plaza is sick. As far as places to eat, it depends what kind of food you want. Get a San Francisco Zagat guide. It has all the restaraunts in the ctiy/surrounding area, and ratings/descriptions that are pretty accurate. As far as bars/clubs. Cobb's comedy club is really good, but you need tickets in advance for sure. If you want something more cozy, there's the punchline, and even more cozy, there's the green room. Those are all comedy clubs, in order from biggest to smallest, and also, best comedians to not as great. For clubs, if you take 101 into town, and get off at I think 7th, you will be near harrison street. Right there on harrison there's like 10 clubs/bars, take your pick. They have electronic and hip hop both. If i think of more I will post again, or you can PM me what your looking for.

I agree with the rest, Pier 39 is for tourists, but if u like the scenery of the bayarea and still want to be by the pier, I would suggest taking a ferry from pier 39 to sausalito, and there you will find a restaurant named Horizons (It's about a block away fromt the ferry dock). They have a great variety of seafood, wide panoramic view of the bay, and around 6-6:30ish there is always a romantic sunset to finish off the day. As for hotels, the Hyatt on Embarcadero 4 is plus, the interior is astonishing like said above. If there's any questions about the city you can always send a pm.

Just walk around the nicer parts of the city. You want to stay away from certain districts. For restaurants, you can try out the Stinking Rose which i think is in North Beach. It was damn good last time I went.

food & drink ideas for sf
I've heard pretty good things from friends about farallon also heard from a french-canadian that baker st. bistro is supposed to be good. then there's always the uppity standby's of foreign cinema and slanted door although i haven't been to their new location in the ferry bldg. went to hawthorne lane a while ago for their prix fixe menu, which was pretty good. and if you have the big bucks and a way to get a table, go for gary danko also, for a nice drink with great views, check out the Top of the Mark located on the top floor of the Mark Hopkins Hotel also, a great deal for french food at The Metro Cafe

A friend of mine had her wedding reception at the Westin St. Francis, and that place was pretty nice.
