1999 Outback Limited Issues
My 99 OUTBACK, stick shift limited has developed an oil leak that seems to be coming from the bottom edge of the front timing belt cover. I only have 45,000 miles on this car. The dealer says I might as well replace the timing belt and all the drive belts as he has to remove all of that or will be right there anyway to fix the oil leak.
One isn't 45,000 a little soon to have an oil leak and replace the timing belt; Two where would it most likely be coming from?? How hard would it be to do it myself and what should I replace if I am in there anyway. IE working with the engine in the car it seems like a really tight space to work in, would I have to remove the radiator to get at it? Also says I need a new right lower control arm bushing $440!! how hard is that for a backyard mechanic to do on the outback. |

it's not the mileage that is causing any issues
it's the AGE of the vehicle oil seals will become brittle over time regardless of if you drive the car OR NOT You've obviously got a leak if you're going to get in there, you're best off doing all maintenance at one time. recommended: timing belt, cam seals, front crank seal, oil pump oring and water pump at the minimum. lower control arm bushing is not difficult to swap imho... Same leak happened on my wife's 99 OB Ltd. That car was under warranty though and we also had them replace the timing belt.
