I'm seeing anywhere from 22-27 mpg depending on my % of highway driving.
FYI, before I started following the I-club board, I lurked extensively on the subaru newsgroup. Guys there reported almost that their gas mileage improved dramatically after about 25k miles. Apparently our little boxer engines take a while to settle in. So we can probably expect to see better fuel consumption by next year. I only have 4300 mi on right now.

wrx mpg
The mpg seems to be pretty variable, dependent on both the brand of gas put in as well as how heavy my foot is on the gas. Usually my foot is feeling pretty heavy, so I am getting about 250 to 320 (best so far) on a tank. I keep trying to experiment and drive conservative to see what my max mpg is, but I just can't seem to keep from pushing that sweet metal pedal to the floor!

I will get about 22-27mpg in town. It seems the faster the speedlimit is on the highway the better the milage gets. From Carney Nebraska to Omaha the speed limit is 80mph. I got nearly 32mpg

Interesting you should mention that...High speeds on the freeway also seem to give me the best mpg. On my car's first road trip after breaking 1000 miles, I drove it pretty hard, and for a long period of time. I even had the silver bullet up to 120mph (handled as if I were going 90).
When I stopped for gas, I had 320 miles on the trip meter and fuel gauge was not even on empty! Maybe the cars like being driven at higher rpm's (3000-5000) and get optimum gas mileage during freeway driving in that rpm range? But city driving at higher rpm's seem to suck down fuel as if it were tasty martini! |

I have 6500 miles on my automatic WRX. I get 20-22 mpg in mostly city driving and 27-28 mpg driving on the highway at 70-75mph.

On my one full tank of freeway driving at 80-90 mph I got 27.8 mpg. The last few tanks sinse I switched to Mobil 1 I've gotten just under 17 mpg. I do almost stop and go driving (in the city) and I get on it all the time.
The car just rolled 2000 miles so it may still be adjusting. I also added a CAI last week, so we'll see how that helps. I always let the car idle to warm up and idle to cool down too. May have something to do with the 17 mpg. Question for all: How many miles have you gone after Fuel light comes on? |

Here's the last 3 months or so from my palm pilot. No mods yet - should be interesting to see if there's any change due to intake or exhaust. This is a lot better than the 12.5mpg average I had in my '93 RX-7!

benno,
i'm sure, you dont have to carry to the Nth decimal point... anyway, got mine last month. broke it in and drove to vegas. entire trip was like1400 miles. got around 25-28 for the trip. now i'm home and learning to drive a stick, and my daily commute is 8 miles each way: 4 miles on freeway, last mile climbing a hill with 15% grade, i'm dropped to 20. last fill up, 2 days ago, registered around 19.5. and yes, i keep ALL records for mileage. gives me a chance to keep a database of stuff, like repairs, oil changes, etc. btw, previous daily driver was a toyota 4runner with a v6 and auto tranny. nearly 4 years of data. i'm lucky if i get 17-18 on the highway... |

i guess this is something for another topic, but i love the gear ratios of the wrx. you don't even need to use 5th gear if you don't want to, (unless you are going really fast or long distances) unlike my old chevy truck, where i was in 5th gear by 55 mph! i don't know if a lot of modern cars are like the wrx, but going 85mph in 3rd gear without straining the engine is pretty amazing to me. |

Stock except silencer mod and K&N filter. 5W30 Mobil1.
Fuel light usually on at 270 miles. About 20 mpg. This is with mixed driving--mostly high-speed Interstate, some rural, some suburban. I actually expected a little better. A guy I run with who has about the same commute (and similar driving style) gets about 22 mpg with a new 2002 Firebird WS6 that's been modified. Last edited by sajohnson; 02-24-2002 at 03:23 PM. |

I have been getting anywhere between 19 and 23 mpg with 75% highway driving and 25% city driving. I probably could do better, but its hard to stay light on the throttle when the boost kicks in at 3000rpm.

i get no more that 260 max before the light comes on. a lot of freeway driving. i hate the mpg that the wrx gets. it sucks. i used to drive a 00 celica gts. i used to get over 350 miles with that car. costs less to fill up the tank too.

I usually get 19 mpg in mixed driving with a heavy foot. MBC set to about 14.5 psi. Auto trans. About 5600 total miles on the car. I have records from the very begining and have never gotten above 23 mpg. Mmm ...maybe I should drive without getting on the boost so much. (Oh yes, thats likely to happen )

15.9 Gal Tank...
I read in the owners manual that this activates when there is approximately 2.3 gal left in the tank.
So, dividing by the full tank volume when the low gas light comes on will give you lower than actual MPG. Just a thought for anyone figuring out MPG by that method. I was usually getting about 300 miles per tank (Before low gas light) out of mine before going to synthetic everything. 22mpg. This is mixed City/Highway mostly kept below 4k, though I don't really drive like a granny. Boost is kindof addictive =) Since changing gear oils to Redline, Got 325 out of one tank with 4 people in the car for most of the trip. Also mixed City/Highway. 24mpg. Just a question, does running a stock WRX down to the low gas light cause any problems? I've heard a little about fuel slosh, but searches turn up nothing really. Any help? |

Fuel Slosh
Personal experience:
When the low fuel light comes on, don't waste time getting gas. On my way to work one day the fuel light came on about 20 miles before my exit. The ramp is a nice sweeper--left and then right. As I was going thru the left-hand turn the car just DIED! It was as if I'd hit the rev limiter. I barely made it to the first gas station about a mile away. Question: Has your mileage been consistently better since switching to Redline gear oil, or was it just that one trip? You're talking about almost a 10% increase which seems a bit high. Just wondering. |

Redline Oils
It's been 3 tanks that way, about an extra 20 - 30 miles over what I usually get. It's pretty cool. Changed out Rear Differential to Redline 75W90 and Gear oil to superlight shockproof.
So is that fuel slosh? Low gas, rapid turns, fuel pump loses suction and car dies? SCC mentions their rotary dying because of fuel slosh, so I figured it was more serious. Thanks for the reply though. |

Synthetic Gear Oils and Mileage
Cobra 117:
That's a great improvement in mileage. Makes me wonder--since it is obviously running more efficiently, if it is also a little faster. How did you decide on Redline 75W90 for the rear diff. and superlight shockproof for the transaxle? I know about Redline, but what is 'superlight shockproof'? Finally, what is a good source? |

Just thought I'd post my experience with WRX mpg...
Usually get about 24 when I'm on the gas a bit. Do mostly highway driving, though. Last couple tanks I've been cruisin more and got just over 26 (less than 27 though). 370 when the light came on. One of these days I'm going to try to hit 400 before the light! But then, you really have to drive it like it's a geo metro :P |
