Full auto is fun. Next time rent the belt fed guns for a real machinegun experience. As for the Mauser I would leave it alone unless you can find some period correct mount and scope for it. With some practice you would be surprised at how accurate they actually are.

Buying my first handgun, protection in mind. Was recommended a glock 45. Pros? cons? I'm wanting to fire a 1911 before I make my decision also.

I personally hate glocks. I hate the trigger, I like external safeties on my handguns and glocks do not have one, and I don't like the fit in my hand. They can be found cheap though, and they are reliable.
I would say just shoot a few guns first. There are pleanty of reliable handguns on the market. |

Find one that feels good in your hands and naturally points for you. Then rent one if you can and see what caliber in that model works best for you After all this fact finding you can find the best deal and get your first handgun! |

Do not get your ccw at high noon in pv. You will sit through 8 hours of them telling you how awesome they are and why you should spend 800 bucks on their shooting class. Wait for gunsite to do it, where they teach you to shoot as well as get you a ccw.

Things to keep in mind...
Accuracy is a critically important factor. A single, properly placed .22 can stop an attacker, a missed .45 can't. And accuracy comes from practice. On the other hand, in a real life scenario, it could take too many .22 rounds to actually stop an attacker. So, get a caliber of gun that you can both afford to practice with on a regular basis AND is large enough to have some stopping power. Despite what some will tell you, a .45 may not be your best option. If you can't hit your target, the size of bullet won't matter. You also don't want to be shooting BB's at a raging bull on crack. Some other things...do you want one that you can add something like a Crimson-Trace to? A light? Yes, there is a lot to it. But the time/research is worth it. |

A gun I would suggest looking at is the Smith and Wesson M&P series. From what I gather it is proving to be reliable, at a good price-point, comes in a number of calibers, has an accessory rail, and has an adustable backstrap.

Definitely get your hands on some guns. 45s tend to be rather large which is exactly what you don't want when you are carrying concealed. Any of the standard service rounds (38 spec, 9mm, 40, 45) when using good ammunition is going to act very similarly in a shooting. The FBI did a lot of research into what the ideal performance for a handgun is and all bullet manufacturers load their ammunition to meet that standard. My personal recommendation is always a 9mm as the guns tend to be sized small enough to easily handle and have light recoil.
When you buy ammunition try to buy the good stuff. One that's easy to find and performs well is the Speer Gold Dot. Don't buy the Hydroshocks. That is 20 year old bullet technology that have a long history of poor performance by today's standards. Whatever you buy just be sure to practice. I would also seek professional training. The fact that you live near Gunsite is awesome. Winning a gunfight has very little to do with what gun you have and much to do with your tactics. The old saying "it's the Indian not the arrow" applies here along with "amateurs argue hardware while professionals discuss logistics and training". Owning a gun doesn't make you protected just like owning a piano doesn't make you a pianist. |

But anyway good info above. Also keep in mind the weight factor of the gun you want to conceal carry. I choose the FN 5.7 to as my conceal carry/open carry loaded with Elite ammuntion. The weight is low, has 20 rounds and has very manageable recoil even with the hotter loads. Also whatever defensive round you want to carry be sure to put a box or two through it to make sure your gun is reliable with that ammo. |

the other thing to take into count is where you live, it does actually get cold from time to time up in Prescott, you will want nothing less than a 9mm. Rounds such as the .380auto while fantastic as a ccw down here in Phoenix won't work for squat up there in the winter. (they don't like heavy jackets). another option no one has thrown out here, if you are looking for a good CCW gun, I got my hands on a Ruger LC9 a few days ago, very nice little gun. manageable recoil small and fairly inexpensive.
On a side note, I will be moving up to Prescott for school in a few weeks, once i get settled in and figure out my school schedule i will bring some of the toys up and let you shoot a variety of guns and calibers... |
