I've met dealers that do that, it's ****ing retarded. Their argument is that "buyers of these fine vehicles want to be sure that they were the only one to ever drive it, even the dealership staff aren't allowed to drive it"

To which I call bull excrement.

Find a better dealer. They're out there.

1. The used car is market is horrendously over-priced for even a base model.
2. Base MSRP for a WRX 26500 (Give or Take), Dealerships are listing prices some 2-4k more, matching Premium and Limited Base MSRP.
3. These car do not depreciate, they actually appreciate ( Which is great if you bought one already not so great for someone who wants one.)

I'm a single 25 year old, who desperately wants an 2011-2012 White Hatch, but for the prices they are asking...I couldn't possibly justify a 450-500 Car payment...

And I don't like the body style of the current Impreza...especially rumors that the power plant will be a 2.0 in the next gen WRX and STi.

I don't know if I'll be ever shifting gears in a white Subaru WRX, in the roads of Upstate NY.
Buy a 98-01 GC, do a WRX or STi engine swap, or buy from someone who's selling one that's already swapped. You can find most for around 12k or less with swap already done, they're faster than newer generation Imprezas and have one of the best looking Impreza body styles ever made.

http://rs25.com/ Maybe you'll be lucky enough to find one in your area...

Go to a local meet and maybe someone will have a 11+ wrx for you to get a ride in. No guarantees it will be stock though.
LOL, nope 31, brought my wife with me. One of the first things the salesman asked is "what are you looking to accomplish today?" I said, "look at a WRX, like I asked". Maybe if I would have said "umm, give you MSRP for whatever WRX you have on the lot, I dont care, you can even pick the color", maybe then I could have gotten a test drive??? I dont think he like the fact that I told him I test drove a Mustang and a Challenger already, and that I am not a Subaru fanatic. I told him that me and the wife are looking to start a family this year so I still want something fun with a stick, but a hatch with AWD is a bit more practical than a challenger.

Yup. Here is the best part. I even asked if he had a used 2011 or 2012 I could drive instead, IDC, just needed to test drive before I started haggling. He said sure! let me see what I can do. Comes back in 5 mins, copies my license...etc 10 mins later, all I have is an STI. LOL, I said nevermind, thanks anyway and left.

Buy what you can afford. Period. That includes the 2.5i.

The wrx is a very stout vehicle. I've had my 06 for about 5 years now. The only thing I've had to replace (other than my scheduled maintenance) on it is a clutch and that's only because I went to two full seasons at the drag strip. Take care of it and it will be good to you without big issues.

I second this. I have mine since May 23rd 2003, only 92K, Stage 2 about 40K now. Only thing that went was an 02 sensor and a Crank position sensor. Not bad for almost 10 years. No car payment in 5 years. Cant beat it. Car does ride a lot rougher than stock because of suspension mods, braces, stiffer bushings etc, but she turns on a dime and handles great. This car will likely burn to the ground from old wiring before I get rid of it.

The wrx really is a good bang for your buck in the long run. Every car, of course, will have it's cons. I actually have a good handful of buddies that are muscle car guys that said if they were ever to get an import it would be a subaru. They told me not to tell anyone though haha

The last time I had a salesman ask me that I told him it was to find a different salesman. He didn't like that too much.

Keep you eyes open for a WRX wagon. Even old and in need of some repair, it would probably be cheaper than new.

They are not horrendously overpriced on the used market. They just hold their value far better than most other car makers. Would you rather buy a car and have it depreciate immediately?

Despite what you think, these cars do not go up in value. Some people just pay too much for them and ask for more. Just because they ask more money doesn't mean they are worth it.

You can easily pick one up for MSRP (which is actually only $25,795) pretty easily if you are willing to drive out a bit. My BRZ was marked up $5k. I paid MSRP. Dealers are easy to talk down.

i used carwoo.com to get mine. Negotiated a deal online directly through the dealer and had a price below MSRP set by the time I walked in to pick it up. Also used truecar.com to check the value to make sure I was getting a good deal.

Just remember that Truecar.com is a tool used by the dealers. It is still really overpriced. I'd say start the negotiation at about 10% under what the TrueCar price is and try to settle around 5% under the TrueCar value.

I gotta say, salesman that sold me my car told me the same thing, only more tactfully. He said he preferred I not test drive it until I was real serious about buying it, as they wanted to keep miles off of it. He did let me drive a used '08 though (and encouraged me to beat on it like a rented mule, which I did)

I did schedule an appointment to come look at it with my wife (after negotiations with her got to that point) and he had it pulled in the showroom, gave us the full tour of all the features, then the wife and I both test drove and put it through it's paces before we made a deal.

I gotta say I did appreciate only having 27 miles on the car when I signed my life over, I mean the paperwork for it!

One of my regrets is not buying an older STi

It wouldn't have suited my situation as well as I can fit a lot in my hatch and I move a lot for school, but I kind of wish I bought a STI wagon.

Just from what I have seen, more mod friendly without as many problems with engine 'splosion, better chassis etc

Not to mention if you're young they wont let you drive anything even if you've got the money in your pocket.

That's when you call SOA and let the dealer get chewed out for it.

Oddly, I'm not sure why OP isn't looking in the For Sale section. There's a lot of people selling used Subarus, often with some worthwhile mods that most people already plan to do but cheaper to get into.

Being young doesn't matter a ton. I've test driven a lot of new cars when I was in my high teens. I drove up in a junker, was not dressed well, and I still got good service from a lot of the dealerships around my area. It's really dealer depending, more specifically salesman dependent. Even at the same dealership, you can get a pretty wide range of response from one salesman to the next.
