Default Warranty claim after the fact possible?

The long and the short of this is I have my car in for service now, and the mechanic calls me today and says I need new wheel bearings, and the cost is substantial. It turns out they are covered under the subaru warranty (car is 3 years old, 51,000 miles). The car should be ready tomorrow, but is there any way I can get them to take the price of the bearings off the total bill, or does a claim or something have to be filed with Subaru prior to ordering the part?

By the way, the work is being performed at a local Aamco, which is supposed to honor factory warranties, so either they dont know the powertrain warranty is 5/60, or they want to make a quick 7 bills.

Also, to avoid being flamed too hard, yeah, I don't know the warranty as well as i should. Well, I *didn't*. I know it pretty darn well after combing through it for a while

Warranty on the wheel bearings is 5/60

The local Aamco is not authorised to perform warranty repair, only Subaru dealerships.

You can have repairs performed at a non dealer location in the event of an emergency, but SOA willl only reimburse you the MSRP on the parts and warranty rate for labour.

Short of it is, you got hosed timmy, you got hosed.

Why in hell are people not seeing the dealer with good warranties??

This is the second thread today!!

I agree with what hondaslayer said though...sounds like you paid for something you could have gotten done for free. Sorry man

Holy crap, you remember that commercial? That's awesome.

Oh, and OP, you did get hosed. Why didn't you take it to the dealer?

Call them first thing in the morning and see if it is too late to stop the repairs. Tell them you didn't know they were covered under warranty...

It might cost you a few bucks for them to put everything back together, but at least it's not the whole bill. Plus, you will be having certified mechanics install OEM parts...

And you are the EXACT opposite of customers I see every day. Most think that everything is covered under warranty and come it expecting so. They don't understand why it's not, and when I show them their warranty book, their excuse is "well, I never read it". (well, you're the same on that note...LOL)

Thanks for all the good replies everyone. It does look like I got hosed. Well, thats life but maybe I can file some kind of reimbursement claim with SOA. I could plead my case that the dealership was far enough away where I didn't feel comfortable driving all the way there (i really didnt).

Who knows. Thanks again everyone!

I didn't take it to the dealer b/c I knew I needed new brakes, which I definitely knew were out of warranty. There was a squeaking coming from the rear when I brought it in, but I thought it was related to the brakes. Oh, lol, also, up until a couple days ago I wouldn't have know that wheel bearings are part of the drivetrain. I know computers, not cars!

Covered items are listed in your owners manual/warranty and maintenance book that came with your car. For future reference.

I just don't get a lot of warranty claims. Most of my customers have older Subaru's or I do mainly Maintenance.
