2005 Mustang GT Convertible. Are these in high demand or what?
I'm trying to help my boss purchase the 05 Mustang GT convertible which he has been looking forward to for years. Of course I'm suggesting that he wait a couple months until the initial demand is out of the way, but he's looking sooner than later.
The first quote I get is about $1500 under sticker. The salesman calls back an hour later saying $500 OVER msrp Every other dealer I call is saying anywhere from $1K over sticker to $5K over sticker What is so great about these cars that puts them in such a high demand bracket?

They are a novelty car that is just starting to become available and are marketed primarily to nostalgic baby boomers with disposable income.
Two years from now when Ford has produced approximately one trillion of them, dealers will be begging people to take them. |

Simple supply and demand, and that can be an individual dealer issue as well. Hell, people are selling used .:Rs with more miles on them than mine for more than I paid for it new 9 months ago.

New Mustang is quite nice, though I'd go for a coupe. Actually, I'd wait to see the SVT version. IRS is a good thing, it being 2005 and all. Current GT is still just about the cheapest way into 300hp w/ a new-car warranty though.
Oh, and on another note: "R32" is reserved for exactly one high performance car in the world, and here's a little secret: It ain't no VW... bah |

I'd be really surprised if R32s have appreciated nation wide. Maybe in SoCal, but not in other parts of the states.

and, unless you sell yours, what something is "worth" is kinda meaningless, ya know? it ain't about what you ask for, it's about what you get. are the .:R (see what you did?) sellers actually GETTING over-MSRP prices for their rides? |

Yeah, I did a quick search on autotrader and cars.com. Your link is to a high-price dealer car, and doesn't tell me anything.
I don't know what you paid for your VW; it's quite possible that you might be able to re-sell it for minimal loss, or even maybe break even. But to say that your car value appreciated would indicate you could sell it for a profit- an actual net gain for you. I would simply be astounded if this was true. I suppose, with a limited run of 2500 (?) anything is possible. -Brian |

With all due respect, a dealer charging more than invoice for a used car is not unusual. It's holding its value decently for the moment, though.
There's a couple examples with similar miles on ebay with buy-it-nows in the mid-$20s. http://search.ebay.com/r32-2004_W0QQ...dsreturnedZ300 |

again . . . asking and getting are two different animals. if the market won't bear these prices, then the price will come down, high demand or not.

Ther reasons why people buy buttstains.
1. Looks, flat out looks. Alot of buttstain drivers think they have the baddest looking car in the world. 2. Attention, that is given by having the newest, most recent ruststain on the street. "LOOK AT ME!! I have a NEW BUTTSTAIN!!" 3. It's a FORD, people buy it simply becasue it is a FORD, if plymouth made the car then half the people would buy it. Part of the Mustang "Lengend", everyone has grown up around the buttstain, they've seen their buddies or neighbors and have grown up "dreaming" of owning the "BUTTSTAIN!!" 4. Buttstain buyers don't look at "Consumer reports" or "Crash ratings" or or "Reliability records" or "future value" or "Recalls" or "cost of ownership" or "performance numbers" or "braking distance" or ... 5. It "feels" fast, Ford has mastered the art of making a car feel faster than it really is. I driven/ridden in so many mustangs that befall this phenomona. When raced against comparable vehicles that are faster, but don't give the feeling of "WARP SPEED" 6. It's quick in a straight line, nothing else. The '05 V6 I rented was quick, 4.0 V6 with a 5 spd Auto, it was always in the powerband. And the V8 must be a bit quicker. But the brakes suck and the car is general unstable. This has been a problem that FORDs have in general. IT's the mystique of "OWNING A MUSTANG!!!!!" *Angels chorus* AAAOOOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!" |
