I felt the pangs of ambition last night and decided to tackle one of the projects on the car. I apologize in advance for the terrible pictures.
First things first: YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE MAP LIGHT BRACKET. I CAN CONFIRM THIS. I know it has been heavily debated, but I am nearly confident you do not have to remove this bracket. In fact, the roof vent support is supposed to align off of that bracket primarily. Unfortunately, we figured this out after it was gone. No worries, most people remove it anyway. Call it weight savings. Removing the interior is pretty straight forward. Just wash your hands often. Here is the map light bracket. Don't remove it. If you do anyway, no big deal; the vent will mount up all the same. I put a piece of metal behind it (black) to avoid punching a dent in the roof with the drill bit when I made it through the spot welds. Filing the burrs off of the vent door mounting holes. It becomes clear where to place these holes once you have the vent frame in place. Laying down tape to cover the already terrible paint in hopes that it will not get any worse while we are leaning on it. Vent frame in place. Using the interior trim, we made a template for the hole. The template was aligned and traced. Then location holes were drilled and the template was moved to the roof where the holes were used to align it again. |

Here is the template transferred to the roof. Small nails acted like the location pins. Then the template was traced.
The point of no return... With only the mounting holes, I had lots of options: taxi, cop car, pizza delivery boy, but with the hole cut, there's only one option. The dremel overheated and burned up on us about half way through. This was to be expected since it was burned up once before and I rebuilt it with hopes and dreams and knock-off repair parts. I switched to the drill which was over kill and not really as fast as you'd want for a cutting disk. |

Sanding the edges to remove any imperfections and burrs.
We taped a bag up under the vent frame prior to cutting. This is a great idea. Don't skip this step if you value your interior. The raw edges were painted with metal primer to prevent rusting in the future. Not really a huge concern, but anything worth doing is worth doing well. At this point it was 12:00 so we decided to shove off to bed and let the paint dry. Tonight I hope to finish the rest. It's really just headliner cutting and reassembly so it shouldn't be too bad. |

Also, it's not KP's choice to be the way he is. You need to be more understanding of alternative lifestyles. |
