konis with the spt pink springs ride great for the road.never drove the other
struts or springs but my setup seems ok.the only times that are back braking r really tall speed bumps.guaranteed better than s-techs with stock struts.the install is time consuming but worth it. kdog |

....any WRX suspension that has stech springs is garbage. .....AGX struts are old news. .....cheap 'coil overs' are cheap for (a) reason(s) |

That said, here are some comments: 1 - Go into the "Wagon owners post your suspensions" thread. Read the whole thing. Its 11ty pages long, but I don't care - read it all. 2 - You can use sedan specific struts on a wagon, but will suffer the camber penalty. There are only 2 100% wagon specific struts - KYB GR2 and Koni inserts. GR2s are 02/03 only, so in order to use them with 04+ springs and tophats you need the spacers from Turn in Concepts. Konis can be purchased in either variety (02/03 & 04+), and are "infinitely" adjustable - there are no hard stops, just count the number of turns and partial turns). Some people report less of a camber penalty with D-Specs, but they're sedan specific. There is no wagon-version AGX - people either use the sedan AGX or the GC version, which has the same camber penalty and the added negatives of needing to ziptie the brake/abs line and having a different spring perch location. Also, AGXs are 4-way adjustable. 3 - I don't consider Prodrive and Eibach springs to be "medium" - their rates are rather soft. I don't think you get "medium" until you start hitting the SPT Pink/USDM STi spring rates (~225F/~195R) If you're looking for the smoothest ride, you probably want something like Koni inserts (adjusted 1/4 turn from full soft) with stock springs. Its been too long since I had my stock suspension, but I think my Koni insert/STi spring combo is a great daily driver/weekend fun suspension, and at the softest settings is smoother than what I remember the stock suspension to be. |

I mentioned that link on the second post, its a good one so thank you. Koni's look to be the best struts because they are so adjustable , but also look to be the most complicated to install. - Uncle Scotty - did not know agx where old news, thankx IMHO the stechs on my car are ok for hpde, mated with hotchkis full comp sways, endlinks and GT speck ALK., agreed that their dramatic drop is not good for the impreza geometry, but they are not as horrible as people say. - TurbojonLS - Thank you for quoting the entire long post 1- the wagon owners suspencion thread does not address the topic of this thread, that thread was made so people can post their setup no matter what it is, making it a long read and not as helpfull as it could be because the very wide variety of setups. 2-also thank you for the lovely run on trainwreck point number 2 that explains a several good things about struts. 3-Prodrive and eibach (same manuf) are indeed soft springs, there should be a chart of springs for people choosing struts to help them pick. yes your koni recomendation is very well suported on this forum , they look to be great struts. |

The reason I suggested the wagon owners thread is there are lots of people with lots of comments on lots of different suspension setups - to include lots of reviews of different kinds of struts on wagons. Its more than just posts of what people have on their cars, and is well worth the time to read.

your question has been asked several times before and answered in depth in several other threads that people have already linked in this thread that being said...your original post pretty much answered your own question KYB AGX, Koni inserts or Tokico are your best bets, all pretty much in the same price range and all adjustable for soft daily driving settings |

I did not mean to be hussy puffy :P I just wanted more info regarding adjustable shocks, there are many threads, but nothing on just adjustable shocks,
Thank you all for the info and participation on this thread. Keep on adding more info as many people would benefit from useing this method of suspencion insted of coilovers. |

There's a good spring rate chart at northursalia.com, under Tech Docs. It's a little dated, but gets you a lot of information on springs. It does not include drop info, which would probably be helpful. I like my AGX, but I'm cheap... |

4? heck, i only count 3.
KYB (AGX), Tokico (D-spec), and Koni (Yellows, i believe). The major 3 aftermarket adjustable strut companies. Those are the only 3 for most cars out there. A 4th option, of course, could be coilovers. At 4-600 for struts, and 200+ for springs. You maybe come close to the price of a cheap set of coil overs already at 900-1000. I tend to ignore them tho, on any winter-driven car, as coilovers really aren't great for all-weather driving and continual smooth operation... Good for summer/weekend drivers and race cars, tho. As far as strut personal recommendations, i like the D-specs over the AGX as they are most adjustable (infinitely adj versus 4way-F/8way-R for the AGX), and i've always had tokico's last longer than AGX's. Never used the Koni's, but i don't particularly like having to cut up your struts to install them (they do this with many models), versus a true bolt in application like the AGX/D-spec. Seems lazy compared to just making a pure replacement strut. I bet they lose some significant business over that issue. For experince clarification, i have run AGX on several GC-cars, and D-specs on both my GD cars (WRX and STi). I would run them too, on my GC STi except i'm not sure i want to deal with the camber issue associated with GD struts on a GC chassis. I've also ran KYB and Tokico adjustables and non-adj's on many other cars and preferred the Tokico's always. I also tend to use most of my cars for the same reason as the OP wanted. Mostly street driven, with occassional track and auto-x. I want something stiffer than stock, handles well, but not too stiff for the street (such as all out track-ready). And prefeably weather proof (fixed spring and shock protected by a dust boot. coilovers tend not to have shaft protection (Did I just say that? ), and the coil threads are also exposed to grime and grit). funny thing how there are hundreds of aftermarket coilovers , but few struts companies.
makes me think who makes the struts for those comanies, and how good could they be if they can make coilovers but not just adjustable struts. |
