Default Seat FAQ

I really needed one of these, and I couldn't find one, so here goes...

Aftermarket Seat FAQ

What are the different types of seats?
There are two basic types of seats, a reclinable seat, and a fixed seat. Most people choose reclinable seats in their daily driver, and a fixed seat in their dedicated track car. It depends on what you're comfortable with. There are quite a few people with a fixed seat in their daily driver.

What are the different types of mounts?
There are two basic types of mounts, bottom mount, and side mount. Bottom mount seats have mounts on the bottom, and side mount seats have mounts on the side.

I plan on racing competitively, do I need to do anything different?
People who race competitively do not use sliders or they weld their sliders after choosing the appropriate seat position. In a high impact crash the driver is relying on those sliders to hold his seat still, and at 80mph that may not be enough. Sliders are actually not FIA legal. So, there are three solutions. Either use a sidemount that bolts directly to the bracket, use sliders and then weld them after they are in your desired position, or use custom mounted seats. Also, make sure re-use the stock bolts that held your stock seat brack to the car. (thanks Unabomber)

What do I need to install a bottom mount seat?
1. Bracket - This is what is actually bolted down to the car.
2. Sliders - The sliders attach the bracket to the seat.
3. Seat - I hope you know what the seat is.

What do I need to install a side mount seat?
1. Bracket
2. Sliders - This will attach the side mounts to the bracket.
3. Side Mounts - This will attach the sliders to the seat.
4. Seat
Some people directly bolt the side mounts to the bracket. There are many mounting points on the side mounts so the seats can be adjust by how you mount them. This is obviously a pain in the butt to adjust, and I only recommend this for cars with ONE driver.

How low does the aftermarket seat sit?
Usually they sit 2-3 inches lower than stock.

Is there any way to make it sit higher?
People have used washers to make it sit higher, but it's safety is debated.

How do I get rid of the airbag light?
You can put in a 3.3 Ohm resistor (hard to find) to make this go away, or 3 10 Ohm resistors run in parallel.

What seat dimensions will fit my GDB aka 2002+ Impreza?
Shoulder dimension should be 21.5. 22.5 will fit squeezing up against the B-Pillar.
Leg dimension should be 19. 20 will fit squeezing up against the center console.

What if I want a larger seat dimension?
A shoulder dimension of 22.5 hit the B pillar on certain settings and pinch the seatbelt so it doesn't work.
A leg dimension of 20 or up will rub on the center console, and will require a special installation method. See below.

How do I remove the stock seat?
1. Remove all 4 bolts that attach the seat to the car.
2. Unhook all wires going to the seat/seatbelt.
3. Lean the seat almost all the way down.
4. Carefully remove the stock seat out through the front door.

How do I put in the aftermarket seat?
(note: this information was learned at the cost of many scratches on the interior of my car and personal frustration...)
1. Put the bracket in the car and make sure fitment is close. Look at how much room is left for the seatbelt and mount it appropriately.
2. Assemble the bracket, sliders, and seat.
3. Put it through the back door. Don't even try the front!! Put the base of the seat first through the back door. After it is in there rotate the seat into position.
4. This step is only for wider seats. Slide the seat back on the sliders before step 3. This step is important for bigger seats because the rear of the center console is thinner.
5. Bolt in the front two mounts.
6. Have a buddy sit in the seat to force/keep the back down.
7. Bolt in the rear two mounts.

I stripped the holes where the seat bolts to the chassis!
1. The front two bolts and the left rear bolt are M10x1.25x30. Your local Ace Hardware will have them in grade 8.8, which is very good. The rear right bolt is M11x1.25x30. Try Ace Hardware, and if they don't have it, stop by the dealership.
2. Since the hole is stripped, you will have to buy a tap. Again, you local Ace Hardware should have this for 5.99. For those of you who don't know what a tap is... It basically recuts/cleans up your jacked up threads. However, after this is done, your threads will not be as strong so, don't overtighten! You may want to consider #3.
3. Drill out the hole and retap with M12x1.25, or try to keep the existing hole and retap with M11x1.25. I personally haven't had to do this yet, so I can't offer any insight. I retapped with M10x1.25, but I can't tighten it all the way. I will re-update if I end up tapping to a larger size. However, there is a strong chance you will have to drill out the seat hole a little in order to make this work.
4. You can also use a helicoil. I helicoil restores the threads. You will drill a hole to eliminate old threads, tap the hole (aka create new threads), and then install an "adapter" so that you can use the original bolt size.

Please PM me if you think I should add or edit anything.
