Default 05 STI, First Oil Change 1k or 3k?

Hey guys,

I have an 05 STI and I am at 1500 Mi and I have been searching when the MFG recommended Change is. I can only find 3k in the book, but refers to 3.0L motor. Does anyone have a definate answer from the MFG? I feel I should change it now since the motor is broken in, but some say that the oil they put in is a break in oil.
Also, this question is going to start a stir, but I want to go over to Synthetic when is a good time to go? I live in the New England area.

Thanks in advance.

i changed my sti's oil at 1k with regular oil then went to synthetic at 5k. i'm not saying this is right or wrong, this is just how i did it.

you will find a MILLION theories on how and when to change oil and they are all going to be different.

I think I should change my oil too. My 05 STi has about 2300 on her now.

One question (and excuse my ignorance), what do you mean by "regular" oil? I know and understand what synthetic is. Are you guys talking about getting them from the dealer or just any brand, as long as it's not synthetic, i.e. Mobile 1, Castro, etc...? Also should the filter be changed as well for this first oil change?

Always change your filter when you change your oil.

I changed mine @ 2200 miles because I was about to go on a long road trip. I sent a sample from that change off to Blackstone and all looks good. I replaced the factory fill at that change with Castrol GTX 5W-30 conventional. During the break-in the car used about 3/4 of a quart of oil. I followed the gentle break-in suggestions religiously, but after mile 1,000 rolled on the odo, I started driving the piss out of it.

Just changed again @ 5100 miles and after a ~1200 mile road trip and a lot of hard driving around town, the car didn't lose a drop of oil between 2200 and 5100 miles. I used GTX again for the most recent change. I'll probably go to synthetic at 10k miles.

thats not one question ... regular oil meaning non-synthetic 5w30 or 10w30... and you should always change your filter when you change your oil...

as for me... i did my first change at 2k and then switched to synthetic at 12k

I did my first change at 1000, 2nd at 3000, and changed to synth at 5000.

As far as break-in-oil I read a post awhile ago where someone sent in the factory oil after the first oil change, and there were no special break in components.

Change at 3000. You want wear. . to seat the rings to the cylinder walls.Remember the different materials wear differently . Synthetic is too slippery and wont allow the required wear. I did 3000 then 6000. .and put Redline in at 7000.

Absolutely nothing wrong with changing you engine oil EARLY and there's only one thing wrong with changing it often: cost...

But for people who spent ~30,000 on a car, $30 for oil and filter should be inconsequential.

I changed my oil at 200 miles and 1000 miles and changed to synthetic at 3000. Been changing with Mobil1 every 3000miles ever since.

I did ~the same as nhluhr, except I'm a believer in getting "new motor shards" out ASAP. Changed dino oil+filter in my FXT @ 25 mi.

Change your oil as early as possible. I did mine at 400, 1000, 2000, 3000. Now I am extending the intervals. I went to synth at 3K too.

to be on the safe side, just change it at 1000 miles with regular 5w30 oil, like valvoline, or mobil. anything non synthetic.. at about 3500 then change to redline, or any other synthetic.
youll be great.

I changed it at like 1200 miles and then every 3k miles.

I am at 9.3k now and I am still using dyno oil. I am going synthetic at 10k or 13k miles.
eVerybody is saying that Subi engines take a while to break in so I am taking my time.
I did the same with my 02 WRX and it never never had a problem or burned any oil.

Cheers

Nick

1000 miles
fresh clean oil = happy motor.
Change it early and often. I've done this on my last 5 Subaru's and they have been very happy.

Subaru engineers recomend 3,000 miles and NOT before 1,000 miles. There is probably special lubracants put on critical parts like camshaft lobs and lifters that should remain in the engine during the critical breakin period. I do an easy breakin intersperced with very brief periods of heavy throttle in the upper gears only (5-10 seconds up to 3500 rpm). I changed my oil/filter at ~2,000 miles and then at 5,000 miles and every 5,000 there after. O-Yes I changed to Mobil 1 at the 2,000 mile first change. Car at 82,000 miles now and very excellent in all ways. UOA on Subarus indicate that full breakin occures ~ 5,000 miles eddie

What would happen if you waited to change your oil at 4k. Then after words you didn't have your oil filter due to the service?
