Someone broke into my car but didn't steal anything?
Hi guys,
I'm not exactly sure what to do. I'm on vacation now, but my sister called me and said that my sti's door was cracked open so she stopped by to see what was wrong. All the compartments were opened and stuff was thrown all around (like old receipts and stuff). What confuses me is that I had a nice escort radar detector ($350) in there and it wasn't taken. I'm in another state now and won't be back for a while, so I can't check to make sure nothing is damaged or taken. Another thing that was weird was that the hood was slightly up, so I told her about the flip thing beneath it. So she looked under the hood and said that as far as she can tell everything looks normal. I don't know what to make of this. Were they just looking for money? Why not steal the rims, or even take the radar detector which would be easy to slip in a jacket. Why does it look like they were so rushed, but had time to check under the hood. Basically I'm wondering if anyone knows what I should do. Should I call the cops (nothing damaged or stolen)? Just check when I get back? Should I worry about them messing with something and take it to a mechanic? Should I be worry about them putting something in there like drugs?

Is your car registration and insurance card still wherever you keep it? Sometimes they hit those and take nothing else.

Yeah, You have just been overhauled....no but this sucks. Its very possible they were purposely there to steal engine goodies and 1 person dug through the car thinking the radard detector would be easiest so grab last while the other one looked around the engine a bit, then they got spooked.

I would call the police and explain the issues to them. I'm sure that they will coordinate with your sister to come out and fingerprint and whatnot. |

Yeah, check your paperwork. It's becoming a form of Identity Theft or so my friend the security guard tells me. The break in, steal something trivial to distract your from the fact that your personal information and paperwork is gone. You'd be shocked what people keep in there cars. I knew a kid who would empty out his wallet into his car prior to long bike rides. Over time, he just kept that stuff in the car all together (Credit Cards, SS card, etc, etc.)

I would defiantly call the cops. You want a police report so if you have to make a claim with your insurance company you have a record of it.

I had this happen, all the cars in our driveway had doors wide open when we came outside, the gloveboxes emptied onto the seats. They were only looking for money, they hit about 18 cars in our city total and the cops caught them the next night.
Edit: You should absolutely call the cops. |

My windows cost between $88 (rear door) and $109 (front door) for the glass and $35 to retint them. I did the install of the glass myself. In reality, it was dirt cheap to replace. |

My friend left my back right window on my outback open at my apartment and the next morning i noticed it was open and freaked out, but then realized nothing was gone...till i saw that my ash tray (where i keep my spare change) was gone.. i assume they wanted quick cash and didn't want to have to deal with selling stolen items. it was only like a dollar.... but it's still just weird to know somebody else was in your car.
Hope everything turns out well. |

definitely report it. most likely they were just checking to see what valuables you have installed/ in your vehicle and they probably will return....

The only thing I've personally had was some crackhead come by and look into my window. I just came out on break and typically chill in my car listening to tunes. He said nice car and that we looking to buy one of these. ( ) I was polite and chatted with him about it for a little bit, and he wandered off. I never saw him again which is good cause some of my coworkers are a little less nice about such things. |

Must live in Seattle north (Anchorage). In Squarebanks messing with someone's car was equivalent to stealing horses in 1825, a good way to get yourself killed, In eight winters I didn't lock my car or house once except when I traveld down the Parks.

Had my V1 stolen out of my Forrester
Busted both lock cylinders...not the cheapest fix when they ruin the doors. What suprisdx me they spent the time to do both doors after they F'd the first one...and didn't take the 300 in cash in the glovebox. Hmmm. File a report. |

Get your sister to take pictures and send them to you. I would definently call the cops and your insurance company. Explain you're out of town and your sister noticed it just to get the ball rolling for when you get back.
I had my driver window broken into almost two years ago in an underground parking lot. They didn't take anything. Mp3 player, digital camera, cd wallet, and the papers were all still in the car it was just the biggest pain in the *** of having to deal with no window. Driving to the nearest car wash bay that had a vucuum while you sit on an old shirt instead of the glass isn't fun. I am still finding the odd piece of glass to this day. |

You'd be surprised by some of the tricks thieves use to find targets. Last year my car was hit with what looked like ice cream on the fender (where the factory shock sensor is mountd) and it hit hard enough to make a pretty big dent. I wrote it off as stupid kids but my airbag, stereo, and GPS disappeared a couple weeks later. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. |
