I am going to try on new wheels this week. The tires on them are 245/35/19 michelin super sports. Im not crazy about 19" wheels or 245 wide tire, but im gettin a good deal and they look great. I just hope they dont rub, fingers crossed.

Myrt, you're the MPG king on this forum. I would think that 19" wheels would have a profound impact on your MPGs. And the tires would be expensive. And the ride would be harsh.

But hey, do what makes you happy! Every decision can't be the most practical one.

lmao king. nice. Driving like a grandma makes me king, ill take it.

I thought about that as well but the super sports are top of the line performance tires so hoping the rolling resistance will offset the width increase.

The wheels are also 19" true, but theyre only 21 lbs each so its similair to the stock weight so hoping that increased diameter wont hurt as much.

And for the price of tires... crap i didnt think of that... lol
But i would get 225's when/if i replace the rubber so maybe not too bad?

EDIT: just checked on tire rack the 225/35/19 DWS are $173 and 205/50/17 are $136 each... thats ~33% increase... well that sucks.

Good feelings gone... thanks sgoldste lol

DWS are pretty expensive, no? Cheapest I found 205/50/17 was $130 without shipping

I guess it depends on what you consider expensive. $130 seems reasonable for an excellent set of tires that perform very well in all conditions. You won't regret getting them, DWS are really good.

I agree. they are worth every penny. i wouldn't say "very". they perform well for all conditions. not the best snow tire, but got my car through 7 inches on snow no problem. not the best summer tire, but decent enough. but it is a great comfortable tire, not loud and absorbs the bumps.

Sorry to revive a stale topic, but due to the little bugger in the photo (on the left, lol):

And the damage it caused burrowing completely into the tread of the tire below:

... and the tire place says 'no can fix'...

So with 19k miles on the stock Yoko's, with about half of the tread remaining, I'm shopping for at least one replacement... or two... or four.... and the great debate begins. I understand the issues with differential tread depth on the tires and the issues with AWD.

If I replace all 4 tires, the tire place, to their credit, recommended Continental Pure Contacts, also mentioned that the Continental Extreme Contacts were popular with the Subies, with the sacrifice being a harsher ride. Also recommended Cooper CS4 Tourings.

So my questions are replace 2 or 4? And what's the verdict from the many folks here who are running the Continentals now? Are they still worthy of all the praise that was heaped on them in the past? Or are there other tires that you'd recommend?

As always, thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts.

Well if this isn't Deja Vu. At 19K+, I ran over this back in February:

and it did this:

No can fix also. I can't comment on the Continental or Cooper tires but my verdict was to buy four new tires because, like yours, they were halfway worn down and worn more on the inside. Plus, I hate mixing old and new tires or even worse, mismatch tires. Have you looked up the price of these OEM Yoko's? It's ridiculous.
I had an alignment done after getting the new tires and my front passenger wheel was out of spec. I got a good deal on a tirerack.com closeout, Fuzion ZRi 225/45/17 for $61 each. Tirerack has a few choices with special pricing right now.

Michilins are not popular with subie owners? I have loved them on my race bikes!

I would seriously consider General tires, which is now owned by Continental.

For example, I'm looking at these when it's time to replace my original tires:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....el=G-MAX+AS-03

And these are fantastic snow tires (which I recommend for anyone living in upstate NY):

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Altimax+Arctic

And I agree with others who recommend against mixing different brands/models of tires. Go for all four, if you can afford to.

If you only have 19k miles, aren't you still covered under the road hazard warranty? Free tires?

Damn, that is quite the deja vu...

Oh yes, I looked up the price of the OEM Yoko's. Guys at the tire place asked me if I wanted to sit down twice before they would tell me the price.... just north of $200 each out the door. Knew that going in, but still, talk about ouch...

So a pair of Yokos out the door at $400 and change + tax, or 4 brand new tires out the door for $600 to 650 + tax. And then figure I'd be shopping for new tires in a year if I only did the pair, because the other two would be shot at that point. I don't tend to buy cheap tires, as they just don't end up lasting. So there's the great debate in a nutshell, 2 vs 4.

Did look at Tirerack, but would still have to get them mounted, balanced, etc. after they came in, and I'm getting comparable prices that include all that stuff and 'free rotations' (and road hazard coverage too) from the tire place. In the end, not much savings, if any, in my book.

Looking at the Subaru warranties, the tires aren't covered by the 3/36 warranty. And the tires themselves have essentially no warranty from Yokohama. The Roadside Assistance coverage from Subaru only covers swapping the flat and the spare. Am I missing something else? A free replacement would be a welcome development....

I just replaced my OEM tires on my '12 Sport after around 36,000 miles with Continental Pure Contact, my winter setup are 15" Blizzaks. The majority of my driving is highway and the Continental's had better wet weather traction than its competitors, they're also pretty quiet. I'm happy with my setup as I did not need the DWS because of Mt winter wheels. They're also $127/tire and got a $100 Adidas gift card! Figured I'd tell anyone who is looking to replace tires. Thanks.

Pretty much down to deciding on what tire to go with. Seems to be almost a no-brainer to do all 4 tires for the price, the more I think about it. Likely will hang onto the 3 good Yokos and sell them to get something out of them, since they aren't junk yet. Thanks for the feedback so far.

Decided to go with the Continental Pure Contacts and am sitting at the tire place getting them done right now. Looked seriously at the Extreme Contacts, but the recurring comments about 30000 mile replacements, soft sidewalls, and bubbles forming in the sidewalls kinda turned me off. Gonna give these tires a try and see how they do.

Also should have 3 half-worn Yokos a available in central NY in the very near future.

When I purchased the car, my dealer told me the warranty covers road hazard. But I purchased the extra warrantee till 100k so maybe that's why, or maybe he was just lying to me...

Probably the extended warranty that adds the road hazard coverage. Not too worried about it at this point. Looking at these tires as an upgrade.

yes, and if you financed the warranty with the 10 pay you have to pay it off before you can get them replaced. they also pay for flat repair and with the stock tires we've had a couple, i just keep forgetting to fax them in so i can get reimbursed.

I was thinking Michelin MXV4s in 215/50R17. Slightly taller/wider.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....port%20Limited

Those and 1" lift plates:
http://www.subtle-solutions.com/prod...roducts_id=105

Per http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-comparison/
The Michelins are 0.4" taller (for a total 1.4" lift) and would produce 61mph at an indicated 60mph. Not bad.
