Default Ported WRX heads and bigger cams on 2.5L block

I am now getting a 2.5L longblock to run with my '02 ECU which will probably be ECUTeked before I drive home in less than 2 weeks. However, when I get home, I'm thinking of swapping the heads with AVCS to my WRX heads, which will get ported and rebuilt with bigger cams, different valves, etc. This way, I won't need more EM to run the AVCS and won't have to deal with switching to DBW, which I don't want to do. Any ideas on what cams I should be looking at? Only looking to make 300-350whp, and I'm stage 2 right now.

Is that you Chris? I'll try to give you a little more info on this now that I have more time to think about it since I'm not on the phone.

The 2.5L AVCS heads are actually pretty good but your WRX heads with something like the Helix 264s and valve train will actually outflow those heads by a substantial amount peak flow wise. However, the cost of swapping heads on your motor (you'd proabably have to yank the motor again) and then PnPing the heads isn't really cost efficient in my personal opinion. If you do the cams, I would skip the PnP because that's really only a last resort for making that extra bit of power on a big power car. It will make power no matter what motor you run the PnPed heads on but the HP per dollar spent ratio is very low. That money is much better spent on other mods.

The AVCS on this motor can be controlled by running the Hydra so if you want to utilize it, that would be the best route to go without haveing to wire in the whole STi / FXT / LGT harness, ECU, gauge cluster, pedal box, etc.

Thanks,

Geoff

Geoff, it is me!! Thanks for the info, it does help a lot. I was figuring I could sell the AVCS heads to fund bigger cams to do the rebuild on my WRX heads. However, I am looking for some nice midrange power, and as much as I'd like bigger cams, the AVCS should be giving me more area under the curve, and sooner.

It will be a toss-up when I get home, so I'll talk with my tuner there and we'll find the more cost effective solution. I'm not looking for this car to be a dyno queen, so Hydra will probably be our option. However, if it gets an ECUTek flash before I leave, I'll most likely be doing the headwork, or else a $900 license and tune goes down the drain for maybe $300-400 resale.

We'll have to wait and see after the motor goes in, and I'll give you a call. Do you know by chance if the motor shipped out today, or if it goes out tomorrow?

Thanks again for the extra info!!

Chris

I would recommend driving a WRX hybrid with a big turbo and an sti.. Very different. AVCS smooths out the power range.

Don't forget that if you have em now and a ecu, you can sell those to finace your Hydra. I was pretty much in the same boat as you, and it only took one drive in a hybrid to know that I wanted AVCS. It's not the extra power, but how the AVCS smooths out the power range and helps spool the turbo.

Depending on the cost, I would be able to sell the AVCS heads and get larger cams (264's) on the WRX for almost nothing. My WRX heads are damaged, so I wouldn't be able to sell them for much. If I have to get ECUTeked before I go, I'll be doing the built WRX heads on the 2.5 block.

To be honest with you I don't find the AVCS to be that important at all. I'd recommend a nice set of ported WRX heads with Crower camshafts. Awesome combo and the different in flow and power capacity is enourmous. My pump fuel record was made not with an STi but with a WRX motor with 2.5 block, ported heads and Crower STg 3 cams.

I wouldnt give up my avcs for anything, it makes daily driving on any large turbo very tolerable.

Hey Chris,

I think you're definitely thinking the right things. Your motor is already there; I talked to Muhammed this morning.

Thanks,

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for getting it there like you promised. I'll give you a holler soon about getting a set of cams and everything else I'll need to do this right after I talk to Franz at KTR back home.

The way this mix-up has been handled should assure everyone that you guys are good to do business with. I'll make sure to post in the vendor review and post some good stuff.

Thumbs up!!
