3 crashes on my 10 mile commute this morning. A cop gave me a warning blip as I passed him at a blistering 35mph.

People live in the ****ing Midwest where we get a decent amount of snow every year. We don't get dumped on like some parts of the country and yet people can't figure out how to drive properly. This is seriously one of my biggest pet peeves about drivers out here.
I agree completely. The human element is a joke.

By way of example my girlfriend was involved in a head-on accident last night when a driver lost control in the snow and crossed into her lane. She was a mile or so behind me, heading from her place in Dekalb to mine in St Charles on Rte 38. Luckily, she was able to call me on my cell and I turned around. Bumps and bruises, but otherwise ok. The minutes between recieving the phone call and seeing her walking around were emotionally charged, to say the least.

The girl who lost control was a 19 year old on her cell phone, in a Neon with worn tires (and I think one was a donut as well)

I'm definitely following my girl next time instead of the other way around.
The perspective awarded here is interesting; I could play out a hundred "what-if" scenarios but all it does is bring up the idea of mortality: my girlfriend's, my own, and everyone elses.

Just a reminder to everyone, be safe. You may know what you're doing, but most others are accidents waiting to happen.

FIRST!!!!
ok...it happened this morning on my way to school, on the end of my block, on my very first turn in the first snow in my subaru... needless to say now I am scared to drive it. I know i will get flamed but w/e. I was not racing, was not drifting, did not get turbo spool at 12mph, it just happened. As i left the stopsign and began turning i felt the rear end of the car start to kick out so i hit the brakes and the abs kicked in and just made things worse...slide into a parked scion xB. I feel horrible

Damage done to the scion... very little compared to me IMO

ugh...i still cant belive what happened...on the first snow day, on my first turn...

Understandable. It's a gut reaction, I've done it before.

^When in doubt, throttle out.

Instinct is to hit the brakes hard, but with AWD, just aim and floor it. Sorry for your car, that sucks hard.

That's what insurance is for, so live and learn.

boostbaron seeing as you joined in February i'd assume this is your first winter in snow with the wrx?

Go to a big parking lot and start practicing turns... and starting off. You'll realize no matter what the rear will always "kick" out slightly. I know it does in my car 31/69 power split, nothing you can do.... but go easy on throttle and counter steer.

Pick yourself up some snow tires, it's a night and day difference, literally.

If you lived closer i'd be more then willing to show you a comparsion of Summer tires RE070's vs Snow tires in the snow (I have hankook icebear w300's)

You are correct sir, first snow.
I was actually planning on practicing in between classes in a deserted parking lot by my school, never got there...

When in doubt, jump out (then tuck and roll, protect the limbs).

Last time I drove in snow it was in a tiny little 95hp Nissan Moco up in Morioka Japan 3 years ago. I was going down a slight hill into a turn, took it too fast and almost landed in someones driveway because I hit the brakes at the first hint of slippage. I just scratched up the hubcaps... I didn't drive today because I have summer tires on, could have taken the XTerra which has Mud/snow tires, but decided to freeze my ass off and look at the bad traffic.

You are not the first, nor will you be the last. Get it fixed asap before the salt and weather do more damage to it.

What? You never jumped out of a moving car before? Safer than staying inside.

A waste of tails indeed...tinted tails to be exact
And the green rims are sitting in the garage, waiting to be painted a normal color

Here in NWI, people were driving like they've never seen snow or ice before. I'm too afraid to take the WRX out so soon in the game. I drove my 4x4 pickup to work this morning. Grips like crazy. Some extra tonnage goes along way!

when i was on the EOE around 3:00 there was a nice thin sheet of ice right down the center of the road. 3 accidents in my 1 mile drive, all 3 were 4 wheel drive pickups that went off the road, one rubbed the median barrier.

Going back to UIUC from Chicago last weekend, there were around 5 accidents.

The next monday it snowed too, and the result of melting refreezing had held the whole freakin central IL below like 20 mph.

Of course, I wanted to test out my Dunlop Wintersports. So I did. And I love them. Everything's melted now...

Well, that explains all the skid marks in the center median on EOE.
