Then I asked - Ok but for the test, did you take into account the level it was at when you gave it back to me last time ?

So I passed for a liar more than anything. Told me to come back in 1600km (wtf... last time they told me it was three visits, one every 2000km...)

Boy am I less and less impressed...
Yeah man, I think all you guys are losing the oil consumption test because of stupid oil change guys. What you did makes perfect sense any way you can take some oil out to fudge the test in your way? i mean, if they want to play hard ball. you can play it just as well as they can

Reminds me when i took my car in for the first oil change and asked about saggy rear suspension. They said they measured the car and compared the measurements to the ones in the lot.... i then asked if they removed the spring spacers i inserted to correct the saggy springs. (i told them about those at the beginning of the oil change) Dumbfounded look with a short yes. I was almost at the point where i wanted to ask them what the color of them were to call their bluff. But i didnt want to get a 17 year old kid in trouble.

Sounds like a good reason to buy an oil extractor

As much as I hate subaru the company, I'm only using honest tactics in my trying to get this problem fixed.
I may have tried the 5w30, but that's not really dishonest. I was honestly trying to see if it improved the situation. And the manual said it was *ok* sort of.
I wouldn't begrudge someone for doing what auskip apparently sauggests. But no way in hell am *I* going to do any such thing.
I've not tried in any way ever to exaggerate my problems with the car. For a while, I had no real number on how much it consumed. As time has gone by, and my hood has been opened hundreds of times, I've gotten to know it pretty well. For it to burn a quart or more between changes is unacceptable to me. For it to burn heavier oil, while pampering it and driving very gently, well- I don't like the long term picture in my mind of this car
.

1qt between changes wouldn't be so bad, some of it has to burn in order for rings to stay lubricated

Burning around a 8oz per 1000 miles isn't normal, and not everyones does it. It almost burns two quarts in an oil change. And all my changes have been a little early. I don't even think I've gone a FULL 7500 without a change yet. Usually at 7000 +.
If it was half a quart low after 7500 I'd shut up. That I'd have no problem with.
The rings in all of my other cars "stay lubricated" without having to add quarts.

With your popping seat, why don't you bring it back to the dealership? If you can replicate, they will fix.

Well its been fixed once, and the guy went the extra mile and put rubber pads under the springs.
It took a full six months to "fix" the last time, and apparently its still not right.
Maybe if I find another dealer.

My consumption just keeps getting worse despite the fact that my engine should be completely broken in now @ 15000 miles.

Down a smidge over a quart in 1300 miles... not cool. If this trend keeps up, I will be giving SOA a call again seeing as my dealership doesn't seem to give two ****s.

I think dealers are getting cocky because of the "35% sales" surge. When your product is in demand, it can lead to carelessness and a dismissive attitude.
Apparently, my consumption is only getting worse with "break-in", as I too have about 15k on it.
From the way yours sounds, Jrobb, I'd shop around for another dealer, and call soa too. You should be burning about enough by now to get warranty work.
I hate that my car burns oil at the rate it does, but what really sucks is knowing that plenty of other owners don't have oil burners and mine doesn't burn "enough".

Wow, I'm actually quite surprised. I just received a phone call from a tech @ my dealership asking how my oil consumption situation's been since I had brought my car in.

I told the guy that it's getting worse and that I just had to top off the engine with a full quart in 1300 miles. He said "Really?!" Like he was surprised and told me that, in general, oil consumption hasn't been a issue with these cars. Then he told me that if it continues to get worse, to bring it back in and they'll get to the bottom of the problem.

This makes me feel a little better now that they are showing they care about my concerns and they're willing to fix a problem.

For what it's worth, Edmunds inside line is doing a long term test on a 2012 Impreza and just had a 10K mile update with no mention of oil consumption. I can't imagine it's been an easy 10K either with all of the different drivers.

I only have about 1,200 miles myself, so I have my fingers crossed.

That really doesn't surprise me. It seems that the majority are not having consumption problems. While that is good news, it still doesn't change the fact that some of us are having considerable oil consumption issues.

They probably drive it like a rental car and beat the snot out of it.

Consumer Reports mentioned that they were doing a long term test with an Impreza, though I haven't seen the report yet. If they identified a problem with oil consumption in their car, we would all know it.

Spoke to Subaru of Canada today.

I spoke to a girl who said that "oil consumption and squeaks should get better after the car is broken in at 30,000kms".

She also said that they have had no reports of problems with oil consumption or squeaks.

So I would be interested to know exactly how many of us in Canada do actually have these same issues.

She says she will look into it and call me back by the end of the week.

I followed up the conversation with an email summarising our conversation.

Personally, all I want is that the seat is fixed (which should take a tech about 10 mins) and a realistic response about the oil consumption as I did not by an "economical" car to then put about 18 litres of oil in it a year (which is what will happen considering the mileage I do).

Brian,

Internet rumors are that a couple of Canadian impreza owners already had engines rebuilt or replaced. Try to find them -- it was mentioned earlier in this thread.

Additionally, having read many of the messages in this thread, it appears that a standard response from Subaru is "Hmmm that is strange that you have X problem, noone has ever mentioned X before!".

But just in the last few pages there are 3 of us in and around Montréal who have exactly the same problem.

Is it that people are just whining on here about it and not following up with Subaru or is it that Subaru are instructed to use that response?

Thanks Zeeper, yes I have read the previous posts and saw that Paradis is getting a new engine.

I do believe that consumer "power" could win out if we organise ourselves a little. But then again, it is not much to ask that a brand new car operates as a brand new car should.

Otherwise, I am just going to wash my hands of Subaru completely and service it myself and find a decent local garage to do the major work in the future (I'd rather not though as life is busy enough as it is).

The problem is probably not that common but about 10 people here are reporting it, so it is not unheard of.

I would expect SOA or the Canadian version to downplay the issue.

If my car was consuming oil I would want a dealer paper trail showing the complaint, and documenting the consumption tests, so that when a warranty repair is due I would be on the list to have the work done under warranty.

Keep a good relationship with the dealer, document everything they do, and when they get sick of you showing up because of this issue they can join your fight for warranty repair.

Maybe even show up every time the low oil light comes on and demand they add oil, that should get them on your side quick.

They are some very good points Zeeper.
I don't hold much hope of my dealership helping whatsoever considering the level of service I have experienced since the day I bought it.

I need to find the strength the speak to the dealership manager or the owner.

That's right. CR just updated their reliability data in October. The Impreza is solid red circles in every category except Squeaks and Rattles, which got a half black (below average) dot. So no indication of engine issues to a level that it's affecting the reliability score.

VW MK6 TDIs (Golfs/Jettas/Jetta Sportwagens), on the other hand, are now showing black dots for the fuel system in 2010 and 2011. The 2012 is an average (white) dot, which I predict will turn black in a year or two. This is a good reason why I dumped my 2010 Golf TDI.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head with that statement. I have no doubt that they are told to act dumb and deny everything. If there are no records of people complaining about sqeaky seats, then why did Subaru just release a TSB for a fix?

I have a stupid question. How long should you wait to check the oil after running the engine? I checked my oil after work one day (waiting a few minutes like instructed in the manual) and the level was approx between the full and low level. A week or so later I went on travel for a week came back and checked the oil level again prior to leaving for another trip and it was slightly above the full mark. Oh and the car wasn't driven or touched at all during the week I was gone. I really wasn't expecting that much of a difference when I checked it.

I have checked my oil with every possible variable conceivable for scientific purposes, and hot, cold, whatever, I've never seen more than 1/8" variance.

Yeah soa adamantly denies that ANY other owners have complained of consumption issues or squeaky seats.
In my case, my seat MAY have been the first dealer-fixed seatback. They did basically the same procedure as the tsb shows. But my squeak is back way worse and now feels even more "broken lazy-boy-ish". I'm going to take it to another dealer or two and see about getting it fixed again.
