Oil Leak under turbo heat shield?
for the past year I've been investigating an oil leak. It seems my Baja loses 1qt of oil at the 2000miles mark. I add a qt and I'm fine until my oil change at 3000miles.
a few weeks ago I went on a 8840mile road trip over 3 weeks. Since I did a few oil changes on the way I was able to really look at my oil situation. I checked my oil every 500mi and it was full every time until I hit 2000mi. I started noticing a burning oil smell around 1800mi and I could see a bit of smoke coming from under the turbo heat shield. The more I focused on that area the more I could smell burning oil but It's not constant as it really doesn't burn any oil before 1800mi and once I fill it up it also stops to smoke. I know this is pretty illogical as a leak should always be a leak and mileage shouldn't have anything to do with it however that's the issue I'm currently having. I'm assuming there is an oil line going to the turbo that is cracked or damaged. Can anyone tell me what I'm looking for under that heat shield? Is it a rubber formed hose or a steel hose? I'm guessing I'm going to need to purchase something from Subaru but I cannot find a suitable diagram with what I need online. Also how hard is it to remove that heat shield, they tend to be easy but I haven't done it on the Baja yet. |

I don't think that leak you have generates that much oil loss, what I think and experiencing myself that turbos burn more oil period. I know that if I drive my car hard, I won't have enough oil to make to the next oil change. I have made it a habit to check fluids every 1k miles to monitor the loss. If I drive "normal" then I would lose around a qt every 2k miles. Once a while I see some smoke around the turbo and I can't see nothing coming out other than a random smell of oil. After 4 years learning this engine, I gave up and I pop that hood once and while and if needs some oil, I'll add the mobile 1. Any other regular oil would practically evaporate especially that brand in yellow bottle
