Default XT Fuel Fuel Economy

Could owners of XTs post there fuel economy, mileage, tranny, and driving style for those of us on the fence about about getting one?

I'm on the last day of my 3rd 5-speed XT week.

First tankful (14.269 gallons of premium at $1.749/gal) covered only 284.1 miles of the most gentle break-in driving imaginable. Never more than 2500-3000 rpms, no more than light throttle, and my daily driving is about 2/3 freeway, 1/3 suburban. That's only 19.9 MPG on a manual-trans XT driven about as economically as it is humanly possible.

Second tankful (11.95 gallons) covered only 267.5 miles, driven the same way except using 3000-3500 rpms, and moderate throttle. This tankful included 100 miles of pure flat freeway driving at no more than 65mph, and the rest was my usual 2/3 freeway/ 1/3 suburban commute. This works out to only 22.4 mpg.

My personal opinion: Considering the way I've been driving, my XT may not be a gas-hog, but it's not far from it.

So far about 22 MPG.
Mostly highway, and it's a slushbox.

Not bad.

manual XT with just over 1000 miles, after the fist tank which I got something like 17.5 MPG I seem to be averaging for the last 3 tanks around 21.5 MPG, that's 60:40 highway to around town with the AC on 95% of the time. It's been very hot and humid here lately ~ 95-100°F , highway speeds average 80+

I'm driving in conditions similar to Peaty and with 600 miles on the odometer, I got 22mpg on the last tank.

Thanks guys. That's real close to EPA highway(23). My experience with new cars is I get about EPA city. And I can't afford 18mpg on a new family car. So I am relieved. Scott

Default Regular gas in an XT?

Awhile ago I posted this link to a Maine XT review:

http://wheels.mainetoday.com/resourc...forester.shtml

It contains the following line that interested me:

"Premium unleaded gasoline is recommended for best performance, but regular unleaded also works fine."

This is the first mention I've seen in print that the XT might be able to operate safely on much-cheaper regular gas.

I very much dislike paying substantially more for premium. For normal day-to-day driving, I'd rather trade off a little of my XT's unexpectedly strong acceleration in exchange for the cheaper price of regular gas - IF I could be certain that the engine can readjust itself to the lower octane grade without harmful detonation. Providing that no engine damage would result, the slight reduction in acceleration and MPG would be much more than offset by the 15% to 20% drop in fuel cost.

When I said a month or so ago that I intended to experiment with successively lower-octane (cheaper) grades of fuel, another contributor whose name I've forgotten wrote that the XT ECU has a very limited range of spark-advance adjustment. He said that the range would be insufficient to accomodate 87 or even 89-octane gas, and that destructive detonation would definitely occur if those fuels were used.

Are there any bona fide Subaru technicians in the audience who can authoritatively say (backed up with citations) whether or not the automotive writer cited above was correct when he wrote 'regular gas also works fine' in an XT? I'm seeking facts, not opinions.

2003 VW Golf TDI - 47 MPG

Sorry guys, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, though, this is the primary issue that has led me to abandoning my OB as a commuter car, giving it to my wife, and buying the VW for my daily driver. I'm seriously considering the XT as the OB replacement, in the next couple of years, depending on what they decide to do with the new Leg GT, but I don't think I"ll likely consider a subie as a daily driver when they're averaging 20-25 MPG.

Funny that.
I had a Golf TDI...sold it a few years ago.

I drive the XT (and my 325iX) now, the Hell with the mileage!

Not a techician here, but the only way to really tell is to run it on progressively worse gas and monitor (closely ) the retardation with a datamonitor (SECS, deltadash or equivalent). The ECU 'learn' cycle is a lot quicker on the new age models, so this could be done over a couple of days.

Then build in some margin for extreme conditions ( hot, high etc ) and go with that.

So far, we seem to be getting 21mpg or so on our 92 AKI premium. This is coming from a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee which got about 12mpg or so. I am in heaven.

Also, that's about what my Evo gets too. I traded a 98 Camaro SS for it and I was getting about 10-12mpg. HAHA!

Between the two, I am very pleased.
