Default 2009 Impreza Fuel Economy

The IGT and WRX get the same estimated combined fuel economy, 21 mpg. Imagine that! The IGT gets 1 more mpg in the city while the WRX gets 1 more mpg on the highway. I guess the standard WRX aero kit, besides looking good, actually works.

2008 WRX wagon/sedan, base/premium.. all the same:
manual: 19/25
auto: 20/25
2009 2.5GT:
auto: 19/24
2009 WRX:
manual: 18/25
So, what happened to the 2.5GT to lose 1mpg for both?

It's way under-rated, at least for me - '08 model.

After 7000 km, I've averaged 8.6 L/100km city, 7.2 L/100km highway. In imperial units, that's 27 MPG city, 33 MPG highway.

That's a 5-door 2.5i sport package, (canuck version of the premium package).

According to this chart there is no 2.5GT w/navigation.

Probably factoring in the fact that American's are getting fatter

The best I've seen over a full tank in my GTI is 33mpg. That is very little interstate driving and mostly my 6 mile commute that is all 55mph highway, no stop signs, no stop lights. It is pretty much ideal driving conditions for fuel economy. Then slap on the fact my GTI is FWD, 6MT, and a smaller displacement, direct injected, turbo powerplant. I just find your numbers optimistic. (Note: I track my mileage and the amount of gas I put in the car at every single fill-up, dating back to July of 07.)

2009 WRX 5-spd 18/25
2009 Mazda Speed3 18/25 EPA current annual fuel cost $3158

There does not appear to be a fuel economy disadvantage with the WRX AWD 5-spd compared to the front wheel drive 6-spd. Why?

I thought the 2009 WRX would get worse milage.
Advantage 2009 WRX.

The best I've ever had on a full tank is 36 driving through the mountains. My 25/32 is based on driving fairly conservatively staying out of boost. Obviously getting into boost will drop those numbers a bit.

The worst I've seen is 20.5 mpg and that involves back to back days flogging it at an autoX and all city driving after that.

Seriously, I track my mileage closely as well (in a spreadsheet no less) and I average 25/32. In fact its actually higher, but I rounded down. If you'd like I can take pictures of the dash display, but that usually overstates my mileage a bit. (It showed 37 on that mountain run I mentioned above).

I was initially concerned that I may be running lean or something, but I've had the car checked and the AFR's are all good, further other 3G WRX owners report similar numbers.

edit: I usually run 91 octane from Shell fyi.

Those numbers seem really optimistic. The best I've seen on a downhill section for about 30 + miles was a display of 37 MPG. If I am really conservative, I can average 26 with boosting. If I drive it how it wants to be driven, it quickly dips, getting around 22 mpg.

I boost cause I bought the car to, and that's my mileage. But I am also usually in backroads/single lane 55 MPH driving, so factor that in.

Based on your profile preview to the left, looks like you are running with a roof rack?

I have the Subaru rack which I have on in the winter for skis. With that on my mileage dips noticeably to about 23 city and 28 HWY. The thing whistles like mad too. Anyway, that could be a reason you are seeing lower then me, but it appears you still see mileage above the EPA ratings.

Check out 3gwrx.com, there are many mileage reports on there for the '08's.

PS: On a down hill stretch I've see 45 mpg.

The roof rack is new and my MPG has definitely taken a hit, but then again I just got the SPT exhaust, so I am also enjoying that as well.

I haven't run a full tank with the exhaust and roof rack on, but will probably get around 23 or 24 compared to 26 without.

But the best tank I have managed is 26. I think it has to do with the unique nature of the driving I do. Alot of 40 MPH twisty backroads and 55 MPH stuck behind mini vans. We don't have much for highways here.

What shift points do you use? I've found 2,500 gives me about the best combo of not lugging the engine and mileage.

I am also getting better and better mileage as I get used to the finicky accelerator pedal. I drove european cars before this, most recently a volvo S70. They all seem to have harder pedals that give some resistance, allowing you to better guage how much gas you are giving the car. I find on the WRX that if I am not really paying attention, it is easy to give it too much gas.

And I am loving my Thule rack. There is very minimal road noise, just kind of a spaceship type hollow sound at 55 mph or so.

I use 2.5k too for optimal mileage.
I also am running the SPT, my mileage actually went up as a result of the exhaust, again assuming I stay out of heavy boosting.

I envy the roads you get to drive. Unless I go into the mountains everything is pretty much perfectly straight here. Sounds like I may need to upgrade to a Thule rack, the Subaru one is VERY noisy.

Yeah. I am not even running a fairing and I can hardly hear it. I got the one that also attaches right into the stock mounting points like the OEM roof rack. I love it. I am also one of those weirdos who feels like a car just looks better with a rack.

I haven't gotten to drive enough miles with the exhaust for it to learn yet, but I am hoping that it will help with the mileage.

As much as the roads can be annoying some times (The joke goes there are two seasons in New Hampshire: Winter and Paving season) I do get to pass plenty and dip into the power.

I have been essentially trying to hypermile the poor thing and am pretty pleased with my results. I think the lack of a higher average has more to do with me and the roads than my car.

I can believe it, if he's driving like a grandma. The new EPA numbers are somewhat conservative, IMO. My car is rated at 36 hwy yet I can get 43 with it, so I can believe he's getting what he's getting. Granted he's probably driving so conservatively it begs the question of why get a WRX in the first place?

I believe the stock Subaru roof racks are rebadged Yakimas, which I had, and supposedly Thule is a superior brand.
