It doesn't matter to much I suppose. I could make 70 4-mile trips on a tank if it's making 20mpg.

ya, the trip is so short your engine probably never even gets to temp, let alone the transmission.
unless you do that trip multiple times per day you really only have to fill up 1x per month! |

Wanted to add some data here. I've owned a 2014 Impreza Limited CVT PZEV since 12/30/2013, and the mpg's have been disappointing.
4314 Odometer miles, 13 tank fills. I always top off the tank at refills, and all mileage has been hand-calculated. Avg mpg: 24.1 best mpg: 27.1 <==80% freeway miles here worst mpg: 21.8 <==95% city miles here last tank mpg: 22.7 <==85% city miles here Car is driven by my wife, who drives like a granny, and is a very safe driver as our 2 young children often accompany her in the vehicle. Nowhere near the EPA estimates. Going to take it in to the dealer Thursday to have it evaluated. Warmer weather has not improved mpg's, sadly. My other car is a 2004 Legacy GT 5MT with 80,000 odometer miles, and I drive it like a madman, and average 23.5 mpg lifetime on the car. Sigh. As others have indicated with PZEV models, tachometer rpm's are high, and the behavior of this vehicle is very puzzling when engine is cold. MPG is only complaint on this car. Love it, but why oh why did WA State have to stick us with PZEVs? Seems other folks with non-PZEV CVTs are faring well ... anyone with a non-PZEV want to trade? |

It doesn't matter what state, all Impreza's have been made PZEV since April 2012. My car was built in Nov 2011, I live in a non-PZEV state and I have a PZEV model. I average 29 mpg over 44K miles. |

My suggestion would be go on eBay and buy an blutooth obd2 scanner. So you can get an accurate reading by using an app called ( OBD DROID scann ). |

Ever since I put in mag1 oil I swear my MPG has taken a significant hit. When it was cold I was getting ****ing 18 MPG city! I think a W12 Bentley can get better mileage.
Definitely getting a UOA and going back to Mobile 1 AFE next change. |

^^I looked up the specs on Mag 1 0W20:
40*C cSt - 42.31 100*C cSt - 8.06 VI - 167 That 8.06 is the lowest I think I've ever seen for 20 weight, which means it really thin and "should" be providing good mpg's. Something else had to be attributing to getting 18 mpg besides the oil......assuming you used 0W20 and not a thicker grade. |

Hmm... I just realized I'm using a **** tier gas station now because the top tier ones near me are way more expensive lately. That could be a few mpg right there.

AFAIK, the top tier stations add a bit of detergent to their fuel to clean the injectors and valves as it runs through. Shouldn't effect mileage very much

It has in the past though. Last summer I got like 28 on BP and 33 on holiday.

Take it out onto a nice, long, flat stretch of highway that is hopefully empty, then set your cruise control to around 60 mph. Reset one of your trip odometers then cruise for twenty miles. I would say (depending the driving conditions) that it should avg 35+ mpg. If it doesn't, contact your dealer. |

The point is that all other cars get their Highway rating driving normally. I can get 38 if I drive like a grandma but previously when I did that I'd get 43-45.

The point is Subaru massaged the 2012+ Impreza to do well in the EPA test which unfortunately has little to do with real world for most people.
I bought one and part of the reasoning included efficiency. I'm 10% disappointed. Oh well. |

EPA MPG rating must be for blue haired, fair weather flatlanders. |

My folks have had that exact same experience on with their 14 Forester. No where near EPA estimates and the dealership says there's nothing wrong with it.

Is the 14 Forester a PZEV CVT model?

Yes. It's the 2.5 instead of the 2.0 like the Impreza, but it's still a pzev with the cvt.

It's still rated for 32/34, but the best they've ever seen on a tank even with a majority of the driving at 60 mph is 24.7mpg.

Read my post up further in this thread, have them do that. You're up in the mountains (I'm sure elevation will hurt MPGs, too) , but surely there has to be some flat stretches of highway to try it on. |

A full tank, long trip, in the mountains can actually be far better gas mileage than on flat. I was sitting mid 50s after a couple hundred miles or so in the mountains before getting back on I-25 in CO one trip. If you don't need to go 75-80 mph, your downhill mileage more than makes up for your uphill mileage, and you actually come out ahead of just being on flat where absolute perfect conditions (no wind, flat, E0 summer gas, warmer weather) I get ~44mpg (42 hand calculated, but figure in the odo error, and it's right around 44).
This was a section of my US-285 from Denver to Cortez and US-160 Cortez to I-25 portion in the trip. |

Also remembering that this engine guzzles gas like no other cold. Starting up one morning after camping at Great Sand Dunes, the first 10 minutes or so I was getting 8 mpg...that's why I say full tanks. I can't imagine being able to break even 15 mpg with short trips in the mountains. I can hardly stay above 20 mpg in the winter here short trips.
