Decision: 2011 WRX new vs. 2008 STI w/ 9500 mi.
The situation is this. Would you get a 2011 WRX Limited wagon or a 2008 STI which is in great shape and has only 9500 miles. They are/will be the same price. Have to make a decision quick. Help!
I am torn. The monthly payment is basically the same, obviously with a new car you can get a slightly lower rate. WRX has sunroof. STI has better tranny. More expensive to repair. Hmmm..

What are the core reasons for you?
I know everything about the cars, but what truly separates them in the mind of the people who own them? |

The first question that needs to be answered is what will you be doing with the car? Also, what are your thoughts/intentions on modifying the car?
If it's going to be a stock/mostly stock DD driven spiritedly, it's a no brainer: WRX. If you have plans however, that may be a different story. |

Something that you need to take into consideration is the cost of owning an Sti. It was probably a silly reason for me not getting one (aside from the $10K more ) but I sat down and priced out a couple things in my head and convinced myself to getting a WRX now and an Sti later when I start making more money.

I looked @ buying either one recently and went with a MY'10 STI in swp.
Tranny was first. Aluminum suspension second. Now that I have owned it for awhile, I really respect the care that has gone into designing every part of the engine (especially cooling/internals.) The STI is really hard to beat. Also...when people say its more expensive to repair: If you're hard on the clutch...STI has a better clutch If you're hard on the tranny...STI has a better tranny If you're hard on the brakes...STI has better brakes Sure it's more expensive to repair...because it has better parts AND the parts last longer per use. Good luck on your decision. |

You should never rush into a decision on buying a car.
If I had to choose between those two options, I'd be asking myself, why is the '08 STI being sold, when it's only 2-3 years old, and why so few miles? If you're satisfied with the answer to the above question, then for sure, I'd be buying the '08 STI. Why? It's better and is more fun. |

Modification-wise:
WRX for basic bolt-ons (Stage 2/TBE) STi for anything greater Personally, I would go for the STi and this is coming from a WRX owner. I regret buying my WRX and it's too late to trade it in for an STi. The transmission in the WRX is clunky and there are a few cheap plastic parts found on the car (BPV, TMIC caps etc). I really wanted to do a gt30r, but don't have 7k+ for a new transmission. I also really want brembos, but don't have 2k for a new setup. Oh the rims too, about 2k for a nice set of BBS. My suspension is also a bit soft, but I don't have the $$ for a new one. See my point? I thought I was saving by actually buying a WRX. Now I'm just wasting more money than I actually saved. |

Factors to consider:
* STI's motor has stronger internals if you are eventually going to try to make major power (350/400hp and up). * Brand new car (WRX) versus an STI that although only has 9,500 miles... they could be very hard miles. A peace of mind knowing the wear and tear on a car that you will be starting with from mile 1. * Your driving style... if you beat on cars, then the STI is probably the better route. For me, I am not looking to race at every stop light. Looked for a car that was fun to drive, good price for the performance and had power when I felt like pushing it. I'm at stage 2 w/ my 2010 and am more than content with my purchase. |

Why do people keep saying if you're just going to DD the car, get an WRX? If I were to DD a car between a WRX or STI, I'd choose the STI! WHY?! Because I won't get long second gear, a mushy gear box, clink-clunk sounds all around, or all these "problems" you may have seen with clutch screech on 09's on a STI! I mean I have an 09 WRX, and not a day goes by without lamenting at the fact that I didn't get an STI. The WRX is just so unrefined that it makes little to no sense as a DD. If anything a WRX is made to be stripped down and raced since it's cheaper to repair and mechanically easier to rebuild without the trick center differential.
And before you start making comment like if you've never driving the STI, how would you know it's better, I have driven an 08 STI (albeit in Asia). It was nice! |

I'd be weary of buying any used STI. Try and get a hold of the previous owner and ask him why he traded it/if it was modded at all and if so what they were. If he sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about...WRX.
I have a 2010 WRX, and more than happy with it so far. Keep in mind that the insurance is quite a bit higher on an STI than the WRX, but I guess you get what you pay for. The DCCD looks pretty fun though... |

The car will be my daily driver and this decision is a long time coming, so I assure you it is not rushed. The used STI is seemingly perfect, it was a second car of some guy and it was traded in for 27K for a new Outback or something. I have wanted an STI for as long as I can remember and I am still kicking myself for not taking advantage of the 63mo/0% deal a couple of years ago. I got a quote on my insurance and it would only go up a little. I would not mod either car, except for some aesthetics. I do drive pretty hard - and the STI tranny is very attractive to me for that reason.
For the people who bought a WRX and wished they got the STI, thank you, you may have helped me to make up my mind. Now, I just need to decide if I want this car payment! I have 220K miles on my 99 OBS...it runs perfect and I have made it almost new again with the maintenance I have done to it....but I want the damn STI. Damn, this blows! Thanks to everyone for your .02. Take care. |

Most likely. If you buy an STI and then drive it like a grandma, you should have bought a base Impreza. They're meant to be driven hard, like a two dolla ho...except this ho originally cost $35K.

STI (and I love the wrx) but given the choice for the same price I would go with the STI with only 10k on it in a heartbeat.

Well, I did a lot of research: Carfax, Subaru car history report, reviews of the cars, recall history, speaking with mechanics at two different dealerships, checking the service records on the car and lastly hiring my Subaru mechanic to look over the car for two hours... and I decided to go with the 08 STI. It has never been modded, is clean and is really everything I have wanted for as long as I have been into Subarus. I am very happy and I know the car will be worth every penny. Big thank you to Mike at Elevation Motors in Lakewood, CO.
Now...I need fog lights, RA mudflaps, the aluminum exhaust finishers, the door protectors, tint and more clear-bra. The search never ends, does it? |
