Default 05 wrx front axle removal clutch install

Hey guys, I've searched now till I'm blue in the face, doing a clutch install tommorow, think I've got almost everything covered, except I have yet to find out about differences in half shaft removals from my-my, Mine is an 05 wrx, a friend of mine did an install on his 06 sti, and said the axles kinda snapped in place, then I've read on here that there are 1/4" dowl pins on the wrx axles...is there anything special I need to know about front axle removal on an my05 wrx...point me in the right direction if you can thanks.

Oh and if anyone is interested, the set up is new oe flywheel, ACT street disk and heavy duty pressure plate, going in my evo3'd 05 wrx.

Thanks in advance

Trey

you should have the same style axles as the my02 on, which have a spring pin on the inboard and an axle nut holding the outboard, its easier if you disconnect the balljoint so you can get the axle out easier. i would get new spring pins because they are easy to break

Late MY04 and MY05+ cars don't have stubs coming out of the tranny. The axle has a male end on both sides. To remove the axle, you just need to pry between the axle and tranny. It should pop out with just a little force. There are no spring pins to worry about.

I'll be doing a front axle on my '05 wagon pretty soon. I'm assuming that once the axle stub comes out, the tranny fluid will be free to flow, so it's a good idea to drain first. Is that correct? Anything else I should know before I tackle this?

Well that was easy. I did my axle last night with out any problems. I decided to go ahead and drain the tranny and I'm glad I did. After the axle came out there were still a few drops dripping (or is it drips dropping?) out.

Alright, im in the middle of removing my clutch right now. Let me just say, removing the axles are a real pain in the ass! Its a MY05, and there are NO axle roll pins. I can pop the axles out just fine, but I cant get them all the way out. What do I need to remove to get them out? I am going to get a ball joint puller and see if that helps tomorrow.

Overall this has been a ****ty clutch install.

It's really very simple. Remove the pinch bolt that holds the lower ball joint into the knuckle. Be careful as I've heard that this bolt breaks fairly easily, although I had no trouble with it. I think it's worse on older cars that spend a lot of time in the salty north. Once that bolt is out, you should be able to gently seperate the split in the back of the knuckle with a small pry bar or a screwdriver and the lower ball joint should come out of the knuckle. You may need to tap it with a hammer (use a block of wood to prevent damage) but I only had to press down with my hands. Once that is out you have miles of space to get the axle out of there. There is a wheel bearing replacement thread out there somewhere that shows the bolt that needs to be removed.

edit: I forgot to mention that you'll probably have to disconnet the swaybar link.

Here are some links for reference.

Use the "mechanics option" in photo 4 of post #2.

Carnot-

Thank you VERY much for your help. This tread helped ALOT. I learned that MY05 does not have spring/roll pins. They just pop out with a pry bar. A ball joint puller thing helped alot too. Got the axles out in about 10 mins! Happy Holidays!
