Question 1st gear problems. Anybody else have this problem?

Whenever I'm rolling at about 5mph and I need to downshift to first, (when second's a little to high a gear) it grinds in every time. Now the a-holes at Northpark Subaru in San Antonio told me that you have to be at a complete stop before you put it into first. I know for a FACT that that is absolute BS! My brother has an 85 Toyota Celica and you can downshift to first at 15mph no problem. Of course that can't be very good for it Anyway was just curious if anybody else has this problem and if the "dealer" told you that it was supposed to do that.

This is a common issue with the 5spd. What you need to do if you want to avoid grinding is to double. Say you are in second and slowing down and want to go to first. Push the clutch in and move shifter to neutral, let the clutch out and rev engine to match where rpms would be if in first at that speed. Quickly push the clutch back in and move the shifter into first. Let out on the clutch and you're GTG. I double clutch every downshift on my 5spd and never have grinding issues. I can downshift into 1st with the rpms at 6k and not grind. I have 40k on my stock trans.

There are hundreds of threads about this. I suggest you search and read more. The late 04's and 05's don't have the same problem.
