Post werid engine problem

Well it seems my car has been possesed by some demon because all of a sudden it started surging badly. It starts to really surge between 3800 - 4200 in third only but this morning it did it in every gear. Im taking it to Grant Dean subaru in HIghland Park. For one its close to the house and i want to check it out anyway. Anyone know if surging is the first sign of a bad Mass airflow sensor? The weird part is the CE light didnt come on either so maybe its another sensor gone bad. Anyone with similiar probs.

Donnie what were some of the sign and symptoms when you blew the MAS on the black car?

Yup, thats a MAF sensor. Donnie's was bogging at that RPM range, though.

i did a search and found some conflicting info. Hesitiation is linked to a faualty knock sensor so thats one route. Nothing is said about MAS but i remember way back when that hesitation is a sign of a bad MAS. So know i have to get some info so the dealer does waste my time telling me i am crazy and they cant replicate this. I am really starting to hate subarus. I just cant get over the fact that a car with 26k needs anything other than regular service.

yea mine did that, but the 00 does it every so often too. it could be a MAF but if you havent had a problem with it yet, you most likely wont so im going with the "thats normal" statement but get it checked out. re-set your ECU that always helped for me in the 99 call me if you want

If it is the MAS it will not come and go, it will be constant and eventually you will get a CE light and the car will go into limp home mode. Good luck.

Greg:

Almost time for 30000 service, which means fuel filter.

I would give that a shot as well.

so last night i changed the fuel filter hoping that it would cure the surging problem that i was having and it did...for 10 minutes. And this morning the all mighty CE went on and the car didnt want to idle and then the rpm's jumped to 2000 and droped. I opened the hoop and a huge spark was coming out of the number two spark plug wire where it connects to the black box on top of the intake manifold. When i pulled the wire the elctrode on the box was really burned. So the car is at the dealer this morning and i am now driving a brand new neon.

The demons have been exorcised out of my car. Turns out the coil and the #2 plug wire were completly burned. So the dealer replaced everything and the car is ok now. BTW grant dean subaru was pretty cool, good service gave me a car with no questions, i was happy.
