At least they'll sell all the 07s off the lot quick(if there are any left by 08)....People will come in for a WRX/STi and refuse to leave with a new one.

It needs fenders.. I remember that feeling I had when I had an 02 civic and my best friend had a WRX, and I loved his shot fenders while mine remained.....umm.. like that picture above.
But hey, this'll just make me love my 02 even more |

I just hope that you guys realize that this is exactly what needed to happen to the Impreza to become competitive in the small car market. Only a few of you on here actually sell these cars (or parts for them) and you don't understand (or don't want to understand) the business aspect of selling cars.
The number one complaint I got on the 2.5i is the interior. The interior in the Impreza has been almost identical since 2002, and in the same general area since 1998. That seems to have been remedied with the 2008. Some of you complained that the exterior is bland - what else do you expect? Subaru didn't really hide the fact that this redesign would be more main-stream in appearance. OK, so some of you feel that it is no longer a performance car. It never really WAS a performance car. It was an economy car that just so happen to have 220HP. The WRX will still sell, but the 2.5i is going to become the bread-and-butter of Impreza sales for Subaru. What would you rather have: a more main-stream car that appeals to a lot of people that sells a lot of cars, or have your beloved Subaru go out of business entirely? --Andy |

I guess I am blinded by other, less important aspects then.

Yah it sucks, but Subaru has to make money. I guess we will have to wait and hopefully get a slight redesign in '09. |

It's bland because bland appeals to more people. It's the difference between enthusiasts and the masses. Although I do remember a good bashing about every new remodelled design. Y'all will grow to like it just like the bug eyes and 06/07s (which everyone hated to begin with). I do not like it, but meh, I already have my favorite designed Rex. On the positive note, at least it is still a wagon and didn't turn into a nasty short hatch.

I went up to NYC yesterday to see the 2008 for myself. I took a few pictures (should tide everyone over until Evan gets the rest of his uploaded):

For the record, I don't like it. I realize why Subaru went mainstream with the design to sell more vehicles, but in my opinion, I don't think they should have called it an Impreza WRX, because everything that this car ever was is gone as far as the styling is concerned. Subaru really pulled a Bob Rock here. Paul |

I keep going back and forth on this one. Paul, thanks a ton for the pics of the hatchback. I like the hatch, but the tail lights and wheels have to go, and I just wish they put a bit more OOMPH on those wheel fenders. And yeah, the Chrysler front grill makes me want to stick my finger down my throat. But.. it's a hatch..I think it looks far sportier than the wagon for that very reason.

We saw the same thing happen in 2001, though (with the intro. of the MY2002 cars). Anyway, good points. And besides, these photos (and they are only photos - everyone said the Ferrari Enzo was ugly, in photos.......) don't show the car with any add-ons really. Certainly no modifications, which everyone will do anyway. MY2005 saw a large improvement to the interiors, but the MY2008 seems to be a *huge* step in the right direction, IMO. Yeah I miss the white gauges like the ones in my MY2000 2.5RS, but so what? Here we have a beautiful layout, much like the Tribeca design which has been so universally loved (on the interior, at least ). And now it's in the Impreza. The WRX brakes are probably the same as the ones on the MY2005+ Legacy GT, which means a good step over and above the 4-pot/2-pot calipers, and just a step below Brembos. Which I'm sure the STI will get, again. Not to mention that the rear suspension is now like the Legacy, a great blessing to a lot of the suspension/handling folks. I like hatchbacks - a lot of other people don't. They're ridiculously utilitarian, and I give Subaru kudos for trying to get the design back in to the American market. I know about how well we tend to receive them, but who knows. The Mini Cooper sold like hotcakes, but even that is a baby Bimmer now, which starts cheap but climbs in price as you add on one of the million options. I firmly believe that people will love this car, in its due time. Just a lot of yappin' until then. -Chris |

Oh, the one thing I'm not sure about is the plastic intake manifold. I understand why they probably did it, with aluminum costs and all, but...
I just saw something on TV, some auto program I think on PBS. They were showing the manifold holes/ports (not sure what they're called) on a plastic version, which had essentially collapsed or melted, so to speak. Guess that can happen under certain conditions. Probably abuse and/or neglect, but... |

It's a mass appeal small car with decent power now, and longer a boy racer type car. As many have said, Subaru wants to sell cars to the masses, not keep the enthusiast community happy. In this car they have sort of done both by still giving it good power, which if the LGT is any indication is easily improved with a few tweaks, and better handling, but also a generic look and decent space. I really wonder how it will do though since the MPG is sooo lacking compared to other similar sized cars in it's market segment.
That being said, I really am curious to see the 5 door in a different color. I think I will like it more in something other than WRB. |

There's some pics of it in white, from a few of the other threads. Which, naturally, I like.

I don't understand all the hate.
I would pimp the **** out of the WRX hatchback. I can't wait to see what the STi will look like. Cars like the Mazda 3 (and MazdaSpeed 3) can and will eat the Impreza's lunch. They are leagues nicer on the inside, faster, and cheaper. The MS6 competes _very_ strongly with the Legacy - it's much nicer inside and thousands less. Subaru needed to improve the interior and make the exterior appeal to a broader market to compete. |

I've driven the Tribeca, it's a very comfortable car and has a well-designed interior. If I was looking for a family vehicle, it would be on the top of my list. The incorporation of some of the features of the Tribeca interior into the Impreza is a good thing. I was hoping Subaru would also carryover the Tribeca's electronic HVAC controls, but the Impreza is the entry-level car. Maybe as an option or in a few years? Quote:

Paul (Lone Wolf 75),
Yeah I think the Tribeca HVAC may be a later option. The '08 Impreza so far is just the first-year car. More always comes, later. I know very little about the plastic vs. aluminum intake argument, so I'll sit back for now, too. My wife and I took a spin in two '07 cars, an Outback H-6 (which has a *lot* more grunt than her '01 version, wow!!!) and a Tribeca. She still likes the Outback better. Tribeca's interior was great, but she didn't like the handling or the appearance. I agree that it's nice to have a car that looks great from the factory, but I've seen very few cars that satisfy that need, for me. I think if you want that, you've got to get in to BMW ///M or Audi S territory, that kind of thing. STI arguably, but a lot of people don't like the big wings and stuff. Otherwise, you're talking about commuter cars, some of which have a performance advantage. Like the WRX. I mean, lots of people pine after the GC-series cars, still, for example. I still have my '00 RS, I love it to death... But the classic Impreza, before the STi came out, was a pretty freakin' boring coupe/sedan/wagon. Add some big foglights, a new bumper, spoilers, a hood scoop..... ...and eventually you end up with the 22B. I don't know... point being, judgment on this car's longevity and appeal simply cannot be made, based upon first-year production shots. -Chris |
