Default El Mirage Dry Lake Run 11/23

Okay.. there's a few of us thinking about going to El Mirage tommorow.. El Mirage is basically a flat dry lake that is about 3 miles by 5 miles, and it's a great place to drift without worrying about the law breathing down on your neck.

El Mirage is 3 hours north of San Diego, east of Palmdale, and I dunno how far it is from LA, but I don't think that far, maybe a couple hours at the most.

If you're not from SD, or can't meet us at Denny's on Miramar for breakfast in the morning (between 9-9:30), you can meet us at the lake at 1:00 PM.

The point of the trip?

To go balls out sideways drifting the entire time you are there, and maybe get a few good shots of your car sideways with a dust plume behind it. mmmm, desktop wallpaper.

There is a car wash in Palmdale that we can go to if you're concerned about the dirt on your car..

Who's down?

Damn it... I'm sick and all that dust probably wont be good.

Yes, Mark will most likely be down since his car is usually caked in mud and he is only 20 min from there. Call him up, he might even already be there.

El Mirage is DOPE! I recommend that all of you who like to drive your cars how it was intended... GO!!! This is a rally bred car, go get dirty! Want to test your top speed? You got a good 7 miles of flat area to do so. As far as I'm concerned, El Mirage is the happiest place on earth!

I've been waiting for another one of these El Mirage events...

I still don't know how my schedule is for tomorrow, but this sounds promising. Put me down as a maybe.

Would El Mirage be too hard on a 240sx? One of my buddies might be coming out with me to drift his car around but wants to make sure that his car will handle it without problems...what do you think?

El Mirage is nothing but fine dirt and dust, it will be just fine on your friend's 240..

Just be sure to dust off your air filters afterwards.

I'd like to join, exactly where is it? And is it just a big public dirt field, or do we have to pay anything? I'll be coming from the pasadena area.

It's east of Palmdale off the 395.. Just google El Mirage, CA or mapquest El Mirage, CA. Don't have to pay anything as far as I know, it's a giant public dirt field. There *might* be an entry fee, since it's controlled by BMS (Bureau of Land Management) and is for OHV use.

I've never had to pay a fee... unless things have changed, it's free.

The dirt road getting out to the lake bed can be pretty bumpy at times, but once you get out on the lake bed, it's smoother than most roads. You just have to scout out the area you are going to be driving in before you go blasting through it. Ask robert99b what happened to his old Eclipse when we all went out there last year.

My bald tires should be fun!

me and my friend had an accident on the lake bed due to poor communication... just make sure all of you know what each other is doing. Once you're driving in the car, it's next to impossible to see anything behind you because of the fine dust. You'll probably have to split up to be safe. There are volunteer patrols on the bed, and they'll come talk to you if you're drifting where you shouldn't be. Basically, they told us to drift in the not-so-smooth parts of the bed. There are lots of atvs and dirt bikes there too, making things dangerous. be careful everyone.

Well I got there at about 2:30 (got a little lost and I left late) and couldn't find any Subarus on the lake.

I stayed and had lots of fun...until I broke something in my motor. See my thread in FFI forum if you know what it could be.

I guess breaking stuff is part of the game...can't wait until it's fixed so I can go back to the lake.

LateApex and myself were there at 1:00 or so, but we ran into problems with the frigging 'Volunteer Patrol', some ~65 year old man who was a complete d1ck. I asked the ranger for some advice, and all he could do was lecture me.

I did get some nice turns in before he started tailing me.

I'll be going back if someone can just show me where i can drift without getting hassled or without tweaking my alignment on one of these little humps.

Strange, I didn't have any troubles with the volunteer patrols. The only thing that got me off hte lake bed as soon as I did was my broken motor. Once it's fixed, I'll surely be back there.

yeah when i went out in my integra, it claimed my tire... my front bumper, and bent 1 of my forged BBS wheels. oh yeah, and when i had the car jacked up, the dirt collapsed and my car hit the ground with the wheel on and 1 lugnut on... causing the bolt to break off.

good times... im sure a WRX will hold up better than that.
