I have a pancake air compressor setup too. I just haven't used it yet, but I have a receiver that I want to Duracoat before I do the PS90. Practice makes perfect, after all.

I bought a 1940 Nazi-marked 8mm Mauser 98k sporter rifle from a really desperate seller today for $200. It's, unfortunately, in pieces. So I'll be putting it back together as best I can based on plans I found on Google.

I'll post pictures when I get it rebuilt or when I get pissed and throw it into a big pile on the floor. I found its serial number on the 98k registry, and it was an issued rifle used in WW2 from the Mauser factory in Berlin, which is rare, so if I can get it pieced together and functional it should be worth upwards of $1500.

It should be worth more, but the guy I bought it from had it drilled and tapped for a top-mounted scope, instead of an angle-mounted scope, which would make it period correct, so he took off about three grand from the price.

Thanks, redneck.

Neat. I want to see it at the range when it's ready to shoot, I'd love to put some rounds through it.

Ugh, so pretty. I really want their honeycomb cut mid-length barrel for my AR, but it's so freaking expensive.

I have shot their barrels from long distant to close rapid fire and personally the noveske out performs it for the same price.

Because it was 55°, windy, and overcast today I had to go to the range and spend nearly 8 hours punching holes in paper from long distances.

I had the brake installed on my .308 but it looks so sad being hugged by its thread protector

I don't know about his, but my groups are always sub MOA at 100. Usually they are 1/2MOA or better with my best being .293". Completely factory.

Question for people in the Plano/Richardson/Far North Dallas area - where do you go to shoot? I'm in the market for a small .380 or 9mm very soon, and I'd like to try out some of the offerings, so a range that has a lot of available handguns to rent or test fire would be a plus. I'm also a grad student, so affordable range fees is also a positive.

Target Master in Garland has the widest selection of guns to rent and try out. But don't buy from them unless what you want is on sale, because their prices are high.

I'd say Bullet Trap as well, but the people that work there suck, so I'd stay away.

Thanks for the heads up on on Target Master; I will have to check that out. As for purchasing, once I find which model(s) that I like that work well for me, I think I'll be going to the Ft. Worth gun show, or trying to find one used (again, because of the grad student budget ).

Spider Pig, you are an FFL, and in Plano, correct? So if I did find something affordable online, I would be able to purchase it through you? This will be my first firearm purchase, so I'm not 100% sure how it works in TX; but that's the impression I got from reading around. I won't be ready to buy until I try a few and see what works, but if you could PM me what you charge, how the transfer would work, or if you're currently selling anything that fits what I'm looking for, I'd appreciate it

I'm assuming you're talking about the BA as they're both Savages

I got the "rare" .300 WM version of the BA. The market is flooded with the .338 LM version but I didn't want to spend that much on ammo, especially when I don't have the range to really use the ballistics of the .338 LM. I reload, but even reloads will run 2-3 times as much as my .300 WM reloads, and I can reuse a lot of the .30 caliber gear on the .308 so the .300 WM made more sense. It'll shoot pretty much the same groupings, it just doesn't react to wind as well as the .338 LM or carry quite the same energy at range (though paper doesn't require much).

I got 1/2 MOA with the .300 WM pretty easily at 300+ with 190gr SMKs. I was using 168gr SMKs but they weren't stabilizing past 200 so I went with the heavier pill and that seems to have tightened things up. However this weekend the .308 was giving it a run for its money. I worked up a 175gr SMK load for it that's a match made in heaven with its 5R barrel. I have one grouping at 300 yards that was all one big hole which is probably the best group I've ever shot, and that was with the wind

Gonna parrot what Spider Pig said, Target Masters have a ton of rentals, and the people at Bullet Trap are a bunch of a-holes in my experience. They also have no knowledge of guns, at one point, one of them tried to convince me they stopped making the P30 and what I was really looking for was the P2000...

Best range I've been to so far would be DFW Gun Range, people were very friendly, then again, I work with one of the employees, hehe. In any case, they have full auto rentals which... proved to be a freaking riot.

Saw this legal brief about firearms posted on a law blog I follow:

Quote:
Given the small percentage of the population [about 5%] that is licensed to carry a concealed firearm, the overwhelming majority of firearms, or 95%, are not licensed to be concealed. Thus, an officer’s suspicion that a [concealed] firearm is not licensed would be reasonable because, in any given case, there would be, statistically speaking, a 95% likelihood of illegality.
Thought I would pass it on to make your brain also implode. The logic is flawed, to say the least

That's a pretty dumb blanket statement to make, but I'm pretty sure that 95% of us know that.

Speaking of concealed carry, got an email from groupon about a discounted course.

http://www.groupon.com/deals/dfw-shooters-academy-3

Just throwing this out there in case it helps anyone. I am not affiliated with, nor do I endorse groupon or DFW Shooter's Academy.

I have a new stock coming in for my .308, but new stock is BDL, rifle is of now ADL. Now... Do I just convert to BDL bottom plate, or do I go DM? Or even go mag conversion... How much milling is need(how expensive) to remove the mag box lip from the inside of the receiver to accept the DM or Mag?

You can't just swap out the bottom plate from ADL to BDL. It's a full magazine conversion that requires milling. How much depends on how good your gunsmith is and what conversion you go with. It's not going to be cheap either.

Take your time and find someone good. You don't want someone dicking up your new stock with shoddy mill work.

I thought to go to bdl, you just have to buy the Adl to Bdl conversion kit, that has the trigger guard, magazine, magazine follower, spring and spacer.

But to do DM or Mag fed, you have to mill the inner lips in the receiver from the factory mag box.
I was under the assumption that this lip only needs to be milled if going to DM, but not BDL.

Could be. I'm not well-versed in the swap, so you more than likely are right. Might as well try the simple way. Occum's razor and all that jazz.

I'm assuming the conversion kit is a bottom metal swap? You're still going to want to have everything bedded properly and the action torqued in to spec when re-assembled. You'll probably want to get another DBM for it while you're at it as having two is handy at the range.

Yes both are bottom metal swaps, one just requires milling inside receiver, other is pretty much a swap out from what i've read.
The new stock I ordered has a full aluminum Bobby Hart AccuBlock bedding, so I am sure it will bed in well.
