Default Holy Expensive Bearing Batman!

Went down to pick up a release bearing for my WRX to install my Toda flywheel and Cusco clutch tomorrow. $150!!!! Yep you read that right. In all my years working on everything from Toyota to Nissan to Mazda to Honda I have NEVER seen a more insanely priced release bearing. Be forewarned people, when doing a clutch make sure to factor in the extra cost of the release bearing. The pilot bearing was within normal range of pricing as was the 2.5RS release bearing.

uh, what's it look like?

I can post up some pics of the cheap, mundane 2.5RS release bearing. I can even take some measurements if there's anyone curious if you have to use that expensive WRX bearing.

Hello,

Err, uhh, Colin? That's unusual. You must be tired. Push type versus pull type? You really want to try to use the push in a pull clutch? Hee hee.

But yikes, those prices are scary.

I put a new clutch and pressure plate in when i swapped over and was amazed by the price of this bearing..

My transmission, Legacy Turbo, and the WRX are basically identical. Hydraulic, Pull type with expensive parts that are exclusive to US Subarus.

Eventually they'll get cheaper as they're more common, we can only hope.

BTW, why are you replacing the bearing, is it bad? It may be that a 150 dollar bearing is pretty durable I wouldn't normally reuse the bearing either, but at that price, maybe it's something special that has a solid duty cycle.

Ayeek.. so to replace my clutch and flywheel we are lookin at about $400 for the clutch $300 for the flywheel and $150 for the bearing and $200 - 300 to have someone install it? That has got to be the most expensive clutch install in history!

not by a long shot.....try an All Trac Celica (book gives 24 hours...took us 20 hours..labor only!! Thankfully it was opn my car , as customer would have balked for sure!!

At teh point where you are dropping the dollars for a clutch ($500 to $1800 depending on setup), the $150 bearing pales in comparison. if you are doing the work yourself, no bother then. but if you ahev to pay a shop to install it, i doubt they would do teh job without the bearing...if they do, you will sign paper after paper not holding them lable when your bearing starts making noises, and then will charge you all over again..thuis time to just change the bearing.

it is definately worth changing if you are paying someone to do the labor

Question

god, did you have to file the lead edge on the starter pinion gear when you installed the Toda flywheel??

after installing my JUN flywheel, the starter doesn't engage all the way. So the instructions say to 'bevel' the starter pinion gear, .... I'm just wondering exactly what they're talking about.
I'm guessing just filing down the edges of the teeth to make the lead edge 'thinner'.

anyway, just wondering if you, or anyone, has encountered this prob yet, and had some insight.
thanks

I agree - it is insane - my cost for the WRX bearing is almost 3x more costly than the same part for an RS!

I sell the RS bearing kits for $60 and have to charge $150 for the WRX and turbo legacy (with pilot and tool). Sux eh?

So those things really are $150-$200.
Just the other day in another post I commented that I had never seen a tob so expensive in any cars from Japan. That guy was quoted $200.

Man the Celica sounds like doing a clutch job on a GTI-R where the motor and transmission come out as one big piece out the bottom of the car. Instead of llike most cars the trans attaches to the engine on the GTI-R the engine has to be attached to the transmission cause its so large. A serious PITA.
You guys make me feel better about having spent $690 on a OS clutch for my car (not a Subaru). At least I got the clutch disc, pressure plate, lightweight chromoly flywheel and the throw out bearing as one set kit. No extra charges of anything. I only had to buy the pilot bearing and that was only about $5. $150 for a throw out bearing? That's BS! I'd be looking for a kit that included it if they were going to ask that much from the dealership.
