Smile Help me chose some new tires

I will be buying a set of 235/45/17 Tires in the next few weeks for my 2003 WRX Sedan (cobb stg 2) and have been looking at my options on TireRack.

I do not put a huge amount of miles on my WRX and I do not do any autocross or racing. I would like an aggressive tire for spirited driving though. I have been looking at the following:

1. Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position
2. Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
3. Pirelli P Zero Nero
4. Yokohama S. drive

I do not think I want to go to the Extreme Performance summer because I want to feel safe in the rain. I'm not sure what tire to get. If anyone has any suggestions about these tires or others please let me know.

Thanks,
Drew

235/40 would be a better size

the re050a pp would likely be the tire winner of those

I am a bit of a tire noob but why would the 40's be better? I mean I know they are lower profile.

235/40/17 aids the gearing of the WRX 5-speed transmission. If you have the 6-speed transmission from the STI, then the 235/45/17 might be a better choice.

Listen to your Uncle Scotty and go for the 235/40-17 size -- the effective increase in FD is good for the 5MT gears and you'll love the extra squirt around town.

Tire-wise, I'd either go with the Bridgestones or, for a lower cost option, check out the Falken FK452 (not as good in the wet as the PP's, but killer in the dry).

I'll check out those Falkens man. As I said, I'm pretty open at this point. I want to consider all my options. And I'll go with the 235/40/17.

There seems to be some good review on those Falken FK452. I was just wondering if I could fit the 235/40-17 on My 03 WRX (with 7.5 inch wide JDM V7's) because I have heard that the tires run wide? The falken site says 8-9.5 for width for that particular size so I guess I cant run them. I just dont want to lose performance by running too wide of a tire but I was hoping to get 235's.

....no...not.

I've run several 235/40's on my 17x7.5 SSR's with no issue....If I had 17x8's or 17x8.5's I'd run a 245/40 or a 255/40

Uncle Scotty,

Thanks for the help. I was just a little worried because of the falken website saying that I would need at least an 8 inch wide wheel to run the 235's and that I have heard that the falken tires run wide and might look "bulky" on only a 7.5" wheel. I just wanted to make sure it would fit right and not affect handling.

The FK452 on my 17"x7.5" SSR Comps absolutely rock. They fit perfectly, and the turn-in is .

235/40/17 is fine on a 7.5" wide wheel. These are the wheels I used to have, 17x7.5" Enkei RP02s with 235/40/17 Potenza S03s.
