97 leg GT blown motor. hmm, i see a 01 impreza motor in teh corner
So my brothers 97 legacy gt blew up. He got a sweet deal on an 01 2.5rs motor thats sitting in the garage. Ive been doin some searching and realize that mechanically it fits like a glove. just wondering how much trouble im getting into with the wiring, switching from the DOHC to the SOHC. I looked through the FAQs about similar swaps but they are a few years old already, and was wondering if anyone had any updates on how their swap is doing, or any shortcuts theyve learned as far as the wiring goes. I'd rather not use the SOHC but parts around here are hard to find, and we just need it to run.

There are guys that have made the SOHC engine work with a DOHC ECU, but it's not easy, and I've never found any definitive "how to" discussion. It seems the sticking point is some of the sensors - specifically the IAC, which is a completely different type on the two different engines.
One option you could look into is using the SOHC shortblock with the DOHC heads, intake manifold, and associated sensors. It'll bolt right up, and you'll get a slight bump in compression ratio as an added benefit. Obviously that's going to take more work on the mechanical side, but it will save you from doing any work on the electrical side. Pat Olsen |

i think its very possible to just use the heads, intake manifold and all sensors from the DOHC on the SOHC shortblock. someone please correct me if im wrong.

I would do what Pat said, just to make it easier on yourself. Grab yourself a headgasket kit from ebay and the crank seals from wherever you want. (HG kit comes with cam seals) Make sure to reseal the rear oil seperater plate with some high temp RTV and you are good to go.

yea ive got a guy that can do the heads swap for me which is great because ive done whole motor swaps before, but im just not inclined to tear apart a motor on my own.I will probably go that route if the heads are ok. I'm not really sure how much damage there is to the DOHC motor, though. I was just told that it wont fire up and makes some nasty metal on metal sounds. how much damage can these heads take before they cant be machined?

If you see valve impact marks on the pistons (make sure to look before your friend assembles the block) the valves are probably bent and should be replaced. Since your "engine blew up" doesnt tell me a whole lot about what made your friend's engine fail. Just make sure it is looked at before you put it back together, get it in the car, try to start it, and it runs like dog $hit.
