Default Scratched my new bumper, help a newb fix it

I feel like an idiot. Just a few days after getting my car, I scratched the front bumperThis front end is much longer and lower then anything I've ever driven. Heres a pic

I have very little experience with fixing anything like this, so please be kind. Here's how I figure I can make this look pretty good:

-Smooth out the area with a fine grit sandpaper (2000?)
-Apply several (4-5) coats of touch up paint I should be getting from the dealer in a few days
-Smooth out again with fine sandpaper
-Polish area, wax, and stop crying

Does this sound about right? Or are the gashes too deep for this to work effectively?

Looks pretty deep. I would just hit it with touch up paint and then forget about it. Chances are this won't be the last time it happens.

yea zachfeen is right. Sometimes if the scratch is to deep you can buff it out with a compound or if it is deeper you can wet sand. but this look way to deep to work with. I would get some touch up paint and fill it so from far you cant tell. Its going to happen again at sometime.

you can fix it....
get some bondo and fill it in. Follow with sanding to even it out.
Spray paint several thin coats.
Spray clear several coats.

I also would recommend this. Won't be the last time you scratch your front/rear bumper. I bought some JBP touch up paint, it isn't perfect but it's good enough for now.

That sucks man ... at least it didn't break it, which from what I've been reading, is pretty easy to do.

I have been ridiculously careful ever since then. Heres what my progress on repairing this has been so far:

I got the paint from Subaru yesterday. Wetsanded very lightly to smooth out as much as I can (I'm worried even with as light as I went, I might have taken off a bit too much).
After that, 2 very light coats of dupli-color 2in1 Primer/filler, with an hour between coats. Then did 4 coats of touch up. Wish I could have done it neater, didn't want to have to sand anymore. Heres what it looks like right now.

Tomorrow I'm going to sand it smooth then do a light coat of the dupli-color clear coat. Then the polishing.. hopefully the sanding will buff out

Edit: Just realized that I'm going to have to sand the touchup paint, then polish that first, then clear cloat, and probably polish that again. Does that sound right?

Damn man, even as it stands right now, I don't think people will notice unless they STARE at your car from a foot away. Great job. Keep us posted on your progress after you do the next steps you mentioned.

I'm going to keep watching this thread in case I curb my new WRX (I'm getting the same one as olazy it seems) heh

I used the touch up paint from Subaru. It's one of those small brush and pen tip things.

Also used the primer/filler from dupli-color. This seemed decent. Researching more after the fact, I would have probably been better off with a better filler + a chemical leveler. Wouldn't have had to sand like I did.
I'm also not sure how I feel about the clear coat from them. It seems rather gummy and hard to apply smoothly. Maybe I need to shake it more/find a good temp for it. We shall see, it will hopefully go on today after work. More pictures coming then

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm being sorta OCD about this so to me it's still an eyesore

If it makes you feel any better... when I got my current 2002 WRX, it was used, but it was MINT. Not a scratch on it. First few days after buying it I brought it to my mom's to show her and I was woken up in the morning when she backed into my rear bumper on the left side after coming back from the grocery store. Big ol' gashes in the corner of the bumper... no damage to her car haha.

Then after I get over that, less than a week later I'm at a stoplight when the guy in front of me in a van gets mad because the person in front of him won't go when the light is green... slams it in reveres and plows into the front end. I finally flag him down a few blocks later and he says he didn't do anything. I pointed out that there was white paint on his rear bumper and my front plate is bent... he ignores me, gets in his van and drives off.

I called the cops and gave them the licence plate of the guy, but of course it was a stollen car. The cops said a lot of the illegal aliens around Seattle will steal cars and drive without insurance or anything for a week or so then just abandon the car and steal a new one.

Still frustrates me to this day when I tell people about it. However, no one ever notices the marks on the car and mine doesn't look nearly as good as yours. Nor do I ever remember it's there except for when I wash the car heh.

Damn Kuipo, I would be so pissed. But what can you do, knowing me I probably would have followed him. But, if hes driving a stolen car, who knows what might have happened if you did that...

Ya. Like you said, what can you do? *shrug*

Side note: What does the "Mica" part in "World Rally Blue Mica" stand for? Is it just the name of the color? I've only heard it called WRB, not WRBM lol

I think the 2011's actually have "pearl" after WRB--WRBP

Anyway, looking great OP! Gives me some confidence in the quality of subaru's touch-up paint as I'm looking to fill a few chips in soon. 70 mile/day highway and big city commute FTL.

I recently did this to my 06' sti. About the same amount of dmg to the paint too. Could you be so kind as to tell me what grit sandpaper you used?

Oh and your touch up job looks amazing. I wouldn't have even known there was damage done to it.

How much did the paint run you at the dealer? I have a ton of spots where the previous owner touched it up with paint that doesn't match at all and I'd like to at least give it a shot myself.

I got it for free as a favor from my salesman, but I would imagine that the paint, like every other accessory from Subaru is way more then you'd like to pay for it.

I sanded/polished/clearcoated it, and it's looking pretty decent. The clearcoat did go on like crap, I wouldn't recommend this stuff. But I think a nice abrasive polishing will smooth it out well.
One thing I did notice, once I applied the clearcoat, the touched up area looked lighter then the original. Didn't seem like this was the case before the coat. Oh well, let's see how it looks once it's dried

very nice work man - who cares if it isn't perfect. to start, it was already in a discreet spot. people would have to look very hard to notice that.

well done.
