Cool Pics of the USDM Turbo Legacy in Testing, Engine too!

Well AKSubie and I went on a little road trip today and just happened across the turbo legacy that is undergoing cold weather testing up here. We'll probably be on SOA's most wanted list now. So if we don't post back notify the police of our disappearance.

As I feared, the exhaust is just Y'd off to the dual mufflers = extra weight and back pressure.

The interior that is for some reason concealed. Looks like a manual right? From the other side you could see the shift knob wasn't just show, it actually went into a small boot in the center consol. Sorry no pic.

Now the view from the underside, looks like an auto(thanks to SonomaWRX for pointing that out). Sportshift anyone?

Front wheel

The real reason we went on a road trip:

You can get bigger pictures by going to my imagestation gallery.
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4290669201

There were two other non turbo white wagons testing as well that you saw in Yukon1's pics.

As you can see in the other thread, I KNEW there was something they didn't want us to see on the dash! This is so cool, thanks guys! So, could you tell if it was the 2.5t?

Jim

edit: is that a DCCD on the center console? Might be too far back. Can't tell.

I am Imprezed.

Good shots. I'm disappointed with your exhaust findings (did you really slide under the car?). I was hoping for a true twin turbo.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Nope, not that I could tell, Eby got closer though, but still no evidence as the displacement. I could send some of my pics to Eby of the other wagon, but aside form the dual exhuast and auto-climate (note, I don't know if we get that now) they were pretty much your "normal Subaru Legacy" I did see one of the guys take off a huge plastic composite intake on the N/A dual, and it did not resemble the routing/configuration that we currently have.

BTW, the badging on the N/A single exhaust and the turbo was 2.5GX No badging on the N/A dual exhaust.

Great job guys! I'd have to say there is some stuff I like and some I don't like, but with even more questions I guess. We'll dispense with the bad first. I guess my only real negative is the Exhaust, I want just a single, yeah it's the weight factor, plus a little less flow disturbance, and I just like a single muffler, not dual exhaust (I am function over form.) Some of the more interesting things deal with that intake manifold and the intercooler, any word as to if that type of IC is supposed to be more efficient and such, I know it seems there is tons of extra room under the hood which isn't a bad thing. Also, were the brakes vented fore and aft, or just up front? I will say that looks to be the interior I have been waiting for, looks nice and sporty but definately a couple steps up over the current/past Legacy fabrics, even the GT fabrics.

I am just wondering how you got so close and to look under the hood, was there someone around that let you peek? In any terms, great job, you have served the Subaru enthusiast community well. Maybe you guys need an honorary jump in member status.

Here's a full size of the knobs themselves(the original pictures were 2304/1704 pixels). Center consol on top, left hand dash on bottom.

Yea it is just single turbo. You can see the downpipe in the pic of the front underside. It runs back through a single midpipe and splits at the Y past the axle.

That part was a little interesting. We showed up at about 5:30 am when nobody was around to get the interior and underside pics. Left to eat breakfast and at about 9 am they were out working on the engines. There was a guy at each car and two other guys supervising(were inside when i walked up). I just walked up and played dumb. I asked if they had custom installed a WRX engine into the legacy. The guys didn't speak much english they just mumbled "WRX, No". He turned around to work again, and I snapped a picture. He said "no picture". So I appologized and was about to leave when one of the supervisors walked up. He was american I think, and just asked how's it going. Don't think he saw me take the picture. I just played dumb and asked him if they had custom installed a WRX engine. He said no. So I asked what it was and he said just a regular Legacy. Right....

It should be noted we drove up in AKSubie's Legacy GT so he had to have known we knew what they were up to. Seemed like a nice guy though.

Could you tell if the N/A dual exhaust legacy was single or dual ports?

I notice that manifold that was installed that day at least has a bottom inlet, interesting. I will say tough, that looks mightly light compared to the ol spider manifold. That one on there almost takes some resemblence to the one on the STX (a little at least.)

I looked under the one with dual mufflers. Couldn't see the ports, but the header went up to the engine with one pipe on each bank. So it may have split to dual port, or stayed single, don't know. It ran back in a single mid pipe and split past the axle like the turbo.

You could see if it was dual ports, it turns into two right when it starts to disapear towards the engine. Sounds like it might have been an EZ30 then...

Could be, I didn't know the EZ30 was single port, so when I saw the header going up one pipe per bank I just assumed it was a 4 cylinder. Didn't really make sense having dual muffler on an N/A H4(not that it makes sense on anything unless it's dual all the way back). That was the car AKSubie saw them pull a hugh intake assembly out of. Does that sound like something that would be with an EZ30?

AKSubie too. Yukon1 as well for getting the first pics and telling us where they were. He's already a wanted man for getting the pictures of the STI when it was testing.

Yea we're back in town. Was a long day.

They were Japanese I believe.

AKSubie's got some pics too, I think he got a lot of exterior shots and some of the details on the N/A cars. I'll have to get ahold of them to upload if he doesn't have hosting anywhere.

Now that I think about it, I don't think SOA would have any reason to come after us. After all, they said it was just a "regular legacy". Nothing wrong with posting pictures of that.

The EZ has a big fat plastic piece covering the intake manifold if thats what you mean... the rest of the intake is relativly simular to the MAF EJ22 intake assemblies.

Wow guys! That's an awesome Denny's shot! I also like the pic of the 3-spoke steering wheel in those nice Japanese folks' Legacy too. Very cool wheels too. Are they 17's or 18's? The side-flowing intercooler is very interesting as well. I don't like their exhaust too much though, I'll bet it weighs a lot. Thanks very much for posting your pics from your awesome road trip Eby, AKSubie and Yukon1. You guys are the best!!!

Awesome photos! Kudos to you guys. I hope this is representative of what comes to our shores.

Those two knobs look like seat heaters and side mirrors. Too bad it doesn't look like it has DCCD.

what a very strange looking subaru motor

can any one find the throttle body?

looks like a verticle turbo exit .. across the intercooler down under the runners (throttle body) then back up into the runners

the fuel pressure regulator is next to the fuel filter

awesome picts ..

edit : under car from back
is that a r180 rear diff .. it looks larger than a r160
it has a BIIIIG sway bar

Is this plastic piece a heat shield for the intake runners or does it serve another purpose?

Did you guys notice when this plastic piece was removed what material the intake runners were made of? Notice in the pic with the JN dood working on the engine that there are individual probes installed into what looks like a black composite intake manifold.
