I am looking forward to the numbers on these, the 5.3 and 6.2 could be pretty beastly.

The 4.3 is interesting, and it is long overdue to have an updated entry engine.

The Sierra looks best to my eye, and they look better today than they did yesterday.

Reliable...could be a toss-up. Durable...the F-150 kills it. No one on the planet tests their trucks to the level of Ford. Ford tests and designs for the worst-case use. That 1 person who will overload a half ton pickup and tow twice as much as they should, off a 20ft drop...that's where Ford comes up with their durability loads and tests.

I tried designing some new engine mounts for Ford. I benchmarked what GM used. My employer at the time made the engine mounts for Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. I laughed when I saw what happened to the engine and trans mounts off the Toyota when Ford ran one through their durability test schedule for an F-150. They broke 4 engine mounts and 6 trans mounts in the process.

That said, I think Ford is wasting time and money building and designing for that top 1% of owners. It's nice to say your truck is durable and will do more than it should, but at the same time you should be telling that retard to buy an F-250 or F-350 because it's the appropriate tool for the job.

That's what I was thinking. People saw a wall of text, looked at the pictures, and formulated opinions without reading.

I'm sure the new 5.3L with an aluminum block and direct injection is the same thing as the old iron block without direct injection.

I'm actually excited to read that they are adjusting the calibration so they will stay in 4-cylinder eco mode more often. I have the cylinder deactivation in my 2011 Sierra and it doesn't take much more than a sneeze to exit the 4-cyl mode. I don't need the V8 torque to climb the little rolling hills on my lazy drive to work. When it kicks back to V8 mode the instant fuel economy estimate drops 6-8mpg. I average ~17.5mpg. I got ~16mpg in my 2001 Silverado. I'd say I'm disappointed that it isn't a bigger fuel economy improvement in 10years, but the new truck does weigh several hundred pounds more. There are significant improvements though. The stock exhaust note is better. Cabin noise is significantly lower thanks to sound deadening materials. Overall ride quality has improved. Hopefully the new trucks are another step up. They do look good in person.

I took a short ride in a 04 f150 today with 155k miles on it.

I thought it was an 08+.... :notbadobama:

Very impressed. My previous pick up experiences have only been with Chevy and Dodge products.

My dad's '07 Tahoe went over 95k miles on the original brakes.

It's at 107k miles now, he's the original owner. Here is the list of repairs/maintenance/mods:
Rear Diff - blew out 3 times, all covered by warranty and rental car given
Oil Change every 7-8k miles
K&N air filter
Tires
Hawk pads
Stoptech rotors
Brake fluid flush
V1 hardwire
WeatherTech floor mats

I really don't know a lower maintenance vehicle, ever. I'm pushing for the trans fluid to be flushed, but I'm not really sure if it needs it. Truck looks exactly like a '12 Tahoe (except trailer hitch cover is different); rides/handles like new, and same mpg as new. Oh, and it's fully loaded, so it has the super-heated washer fluid option that was dropped on later trucks, which is totally worth taking the risk of catching on fire because it is so beneficial in winter.

Damn. I have an 08 f-150 fx4 sc and I love it. Except for the 15 mpg. Why couldn't they put some of that engineering into the fuel economy.

I rented a new F150 around '08 and I thought it was a '94.

Nothing like a rental-grade vehicle to taint your perception.

You all should rent a Home Depot F-350 if you want to experience a truck that still feels like a truck. TTAC wrote about that experience, as did I.

is this just a heavily facelifted version of the old platform, or new from the ground up?

Real answer is facelift with a few tweaks.

My 2008 Tundra has been as reliable as an anvil and worked well beyond its "ratings". It also has many overbuilt pieces such as huge wheel bearings and a 10.5" rear axle.

My previous truck was a Ford 1/2 ton. While it is unfair to compare a newer model Tundra with an older model Ford, I used to say of my Ford (and it had a grain of truth), if a component held fluid, it also leaked it... .

I don't think that the new GM models advance The Pickup much. But it may not really matter as most buyers in this segment are as about as loyal as it gets.

I was driving a beat-up F-350 work truck around UpNY about a week before you posted this. We were clearing out the family farm to sell.. my uncle was also there with his new-ish F-350 crew cab with wiz-bang color displays in the gauges, leather & factory Rancho shocks. It was hard to believe that the trucks were essentially built on the same frame... his is stiff, but still rides nicely and just feels like a well made vehicle. The work truck was just a 6,000lb torture rack.

Yup. With trucks still being a cab on frame there is a lot to be done with the cab mounts to either make things cheap or dial in ride comfort. Years ago they were just solid pucks of rubber (and still are in the cheap work trucks). The higher trim levels actually get hydraulic mounts similar to an engine mount. They cut out a lot of the vibrations and can isolate some of the cabin pitch that happens when you put stiff springs on the back to support the payload. On the flip side that generally means the fancy trim models have more room for failures and will likely wear out faster.

Chevrolet and GMC is giving the first look at the heavy duty versions of its completely redone Silverado and Sierra.

For its new look, Chevrolet says it gave Silverado HD a look that tries to give it an even more capable, muscular appearance. It's also more aerodynamic. Ditto for its stablemate, the Sierra HD. The looks are similar to the light-duty 2014 versions unveiled earlier this year. For the HDs, General Motors saved the pair for the State Fair of Texas, where pickup and truck sales are some of the strongest in the nation.

There, GM officials waxed about the looks of the new trucks, the biggest ones that consumers can buy and used for the heaviest towing or payloads.
"The passion we have for trucks is reflected in every line and powerfully sculpted machined surface of the HD Chevrolet," says design director Tom Peters in a statement. "From the dramatic sculpture of the one-piece structural bumper, to its muscular hood and side profile, the design reflects a function-driven solution."

Silverado heavy duty will come a standard 360-horsepower 6-liter Vortec gas V-8. There is also a version that uses either gasoline or natural gas.
But there is also an available 397-horsepower 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel with 765 pound-feet of torque paired with an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission on the 2500 and 3500 Silverados.

GMC, GM's truck division, says new Sierra HDs come to showrooms early next year as the 2500HD and 3500HD models, and the Sierra Denali HD. The Denali has the fanciest interior.

GMC says it heavy duties will have the best towing capacity in the segment 19,600 pounds and the highest payload at 7,3,74 pounds. The maximum fifth-wheel trailer rating is 23,200 pounds.

The trucks have a new double cab body that replaces the previous extended cab. It has longer, front-hinged rear doors with outside pull handles that let rear passengers get in and out through the front doors. Crew cabs feature resized doors, too, including longer rear doors.

Quote:
General Motors says the heavy-duty versions of its new-generation full-size pickups go on sale first quarter of next year as 2015 models.

Those account for about 25% of all Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra sales. Within that, the 2500 models, so-called three-quarter-ton, are 75% to 80% of the mix. The 3500, one-ton, models are the balance.

Chevrolet and GMC showed the heavy-duty pickups today at the State Fair of Texas. Logical, as Texas is the biggest single pickup market.

Usually powered by diesel engines, heavy-duty pickups have a broad array of buyers. They range from those who need simple work trucks with more capability than standard-duty -- half-ton -- pickups, to people who tow horse or race car trailers all over the U.S.They want something powerful enough to shrug off nine or 10 tons out behind, even on hills, and they buy leather-lined, tech-infused interiors to keep them comfortable while doing it .

GM claims "the highest payload - 7,374 pounds - and the highest conventional trailering rating - 19,600 pounds."

The "conventional" qualifier means towing from the bumper with a hitch -- a special, frame-mounted, reinforced unit in this case.

Chrysler Group's Ram brand advertises a 30,000-lb. tow rating, but that's using a so-called fifth-wheel setup, where the hookup is via goose-neck apparatus on the trailer that fits into a collar mounted in the bed of the truck.

GM's fifth-wheel maximum tow rating is 23,200 lbs.

GM gave no prices, but heavy-duty pickups start at about $30,000 for pure work models and can run to $70,000 or more for luxury versions.

Chevrolet says it gave Silverado HD a look that is supposed to project a more capable, muscular persona. It's also more aerodynamic, which helps improve highway mileage.

The h.d. models are meant to have a strong family resemblance to the redesigned 2014 standard-duties that went on sale in June. Those have been phased in, starting with the most-popular configuration, the crew-cab V-8. Now, all configurations and all engines are in production, GM says.

GM officials were unsurprisingly enthusiastic about the trucks shown in Texas.

A version is available that uses either gasoline or natural gas.

Most, though will have the 397-hp, 6.6-liter, Duramax turbodiesel with 765 pound-feet of torque, paired with an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission.

The heavy-duties have a new double-cab body that replaces the previous extended cab. Not a full crew-cab, it has longer rear doors than its predecessor, and they operate conventially -- front-hinged, with outside pull handles. That's an improvement shared with the 2014 standard-duties.

Crew cabs feature resized doors, too, including longer rear doors.
