Well, after I start the car, the bendix sticks (kinda like a grinding/squeeling noise for a second or two). Always does it when its cold, sometimes when its warm.

have you tried local autoparts store?

Other thing you can do is take apart the starter you have and see if there is anything obviously wrong that you can fix.

Typically the starter motors don't go bad. The solenoid contacts do wear out. I just replaced mine a month or so ago.

You may be able to find replacement parts for particular items if you take it apart. I'd look and see if there are any electrical/automotive places around that carry stuff like that in your area.

Default starter prices

I checked the price for starters at Advance Auto Parts for a 1998 Subaru 2.5 RS and came up with:

Automatic: Part Number: Worldwide 17292
Remanufactured; Mitsubishi Type; Permanet Magnet Planetary Gear Reduction; Automatic Transmission$174.99.

5-speed: Part Number Worldwide 17290
Remanufactured; Mitsubishi Type; Permanet Magnet Planetary Gear Reduction; Manual Transmission $137.99.

Hopefully this gives you starting point on how much you might spend.

Default Thanks for the info

I was quoted by a local subaru garage for about $180 plus labor. $137 seems much better. Are starters difficult to install? Looks pretty easy to get to. My tech skills are probly beginer, cant install a turbo by myself but can change the oil, spark plugs, etc... Has anyone here done one before?

Default Starter Install

I've installed a starter on a couple of cars. Its not really hard replacing the starter, it's taking apart everything to be able to work and remove/replace it. As far as replacing the one on your 2.5 RS I don't have a clue. I have a 2.2 and I really hope I don't have to learn how to change the starter on this car for a long time. In fact, I don't even know where the starter is on my subaru at the moment. I could easily find it, but never looked.

The starter is pretty easy to replace.

It is on the driver's side top of the trans bell housing. There is a bolt on the top and bottom. So you still need to get under the car, but it's not that bad.

Make sure you disconnect the battery before starting, or you'll get some nice sparks.
