Actually i bet it is caused indirectly by sprawl. Too many cars, people, routes, etc!

could be the fact that turn signals are'nt used , and peeps don't know how to merge properly and also the differences between yield and stop and the fact that a 12 station toll both cannot squeeze to 3 lanes again in less than a 1/4 mile
and the fact that jersey for some reason has No Left Turns ??!!! just cheesy jug handles

I have driven all over the world... and out of "civil" countries. NJ has to be the worst area out of them all. Puerto Rico is a close 2nd!

So rather than try to make better drivers by raising the requirements for obtaining a drivers license, let's raise insurance rates instead!

Hey, it's worked for the last 10 years!!!

New Jersey ranked "3rd dummest" based on scores of DMV-like test questions. My immediate response was, yeah, who remembers how fast to go through a blind intersection with wet railroad tracks? The real-world answer is "slow" and you fail if you don't have it within 5 mph. But when I read this:
Quote:
...one out of five drivers doesn't know that a pedestrian in a crosswalk has the right of way...
it makes me really concerned. I've been a fan of increasing the driver training and requirements for many years.

Who cares about pedestrians when i have an incoming call and they're having a sale at the Gap?

And they say that we pick on them! You can spot a Jersey driver a mile away.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7750/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

I realize that, due in part to the size of our country, suburban sprawl, etc we can't have the same rules about driving in the US, but I wonder what country out there has the overall lowest accident rate, least number of legal infractions, least amount of traffic jams, etc.

Think anybody would ever think to research other countries and TRY to find reasons why they're more successful than we are? I mean, the simple concept of 'keep right, pass left' has almost turned 180 degrees to keep left pass right.

Is it truly as simple as saying the requirements to be able to drive a car (fog a mirror) too lenient?

Would our economy take a huge dump if we enforced stricter rules making it more difficult (note: NOT more expensive) be a possible solution?

I don't know the answers to these questions, but I bet it could help.

My sister-in-law is from Sweden and getting a driver's license over there is incredible difficult and heavily monitored. I think it takes something like 6 months to complete the process and failing several times may prevent someone from ever driving! No ish!

No, its talking about residents failing driver safety tests...it really only says that NJ has bad drivers safety test takers, not really anything to do with driving...but I must say there are a lot of people from NJ who like to sit in the left lane...

NY drivers run you off the road because they cannot drive, NJ drivers run you off the road because they're trying to.

I agree...and what's up with NJ not having do-it-yourself carwash bays? PA and OH have them everywhere! I'll never pay for a car wash.

I learned to drive in LA and did so for 9 years...not one accident. I moved out here 2 years ago and I've already been hit twice. People just aren't careful around here and they really don't care.

Just a few days ago, my wife and I watched some dumb woman try to parallel park into a huge spot in front of my wife's car and as she was backing in, she hit my wife's car then proceded to hit the car in front of it. My wife ran out there and started yelling at this idiot and the woman in the car starts yelling back, without apologizing, and said something like "that's what bumpers are for" I've even seen people try and squeeze into small spots by hitting the other cars to make more space. I have never seen such disregard for other people's property, not to mention people not caring about the laws. Don't get me wrong...it's not everybody but I'd say a significant majority of people are like this.

We have DIY car wash bays here in NJ, and it's not that we don't know HOW to pump our own gas, it's our stupid state government that OUTLAWS us from doing it ourselves.
